We loved them (Ripley and Connor) because they were female badasses through their physical and emotional transformation throughout their film series. They were relatable flawed and naive characters at the start and became warriors that we loved to cheer by the end. Not because we were told to root for them just because they’re women. Vasquez is the exception. She’s just a great portrayal of a throwaway character and she stands out because of how well she was played. I’m all about strong female leads…when them being a female lead isn’t just a cheap gimmick to parlay favor with the PC crowd. That’s as bad as race swapping a character so studios can claim “look, now this character is played by a strong (insert any ethnicity besides Caucasian) actor/actress” or changing their sexual orientation “guess what? (Insert character historically written as heterosexual) is now gay, bi, lesbian, etc.!” or altering a character’s mythos to include some current news topic “we’ve REIMAGINED the character’s origins so that we can score points with certain markets and demographics.” It cheapens the whole project. It’s like filmmaking studios have adopted the KZbin algorithm. Creativity and effort are set aside and thrown away in favor of what they THINK will make them the most money which is why they just recycle franchise after franchise and sequel after sequel and appeal to what the mob wants instead of creating something new and original. Why I hardly watch anything made after 2008 and even that is a stretch sometimes.

Scott is still a stunning director. The issues with Scott's films are the writers and the studio (a good example is what they did to him with Prometheus and Covenant), which is why they tend to be very hit-and-miss, but one thing that is always clear is they look stunning. Cameron, on the other hand, has needed spectacle and new tech in each of his films to draw the crowds in. If you look at his actual direction, he is above average, and his stories do tend to borrow from other films/TV shows. The only director I know who has an eye like Scott, and who, so far, has not really put a foot wrong is Villeneuve.

I agree with Mr H's take. A counter argument to it would be "if you already know what's going to happen then why bother" to which I'd say it's like a classic story, "let me tell you the tale of the hero who saved the land", you already know the outcome but you want to know what happened, the choices taken, the struggles, what makes the story weighty, which is not just the outcome.

The same dark fate has befallen Cameron that effects almost all writers and directors at some point, he is out of ideas. After trying to sit through the last Avatar film it was obvious that after a decade of developing the story he just relied in tired old tropes to tell a lame unoriginal story. He just relied on the great CGI to carry the film, which it did. Its true what they say most writers and directors have only a few good stories or films in them that they usually do in the early part of their career. I'll always respect Cameron for the amazing work he did in the 80s and 90s but he has just spent too long at the bottom of the ocean and sadly I doubt we will see anything great from him again.

Totally agree 04:45 and have said this since T3 premiered. Terminator had only needed 3 movies. T1, T2 and T3 showing the war and how John Connor led the resistance for humanity, captured a T-800 and sent it back in time. Perfect Trilogy. Then they could have made bunch of TV-show spinoffs 06:35 about other characters that are breifly shown in T3, their journey both in the past and in the future war, leaving the trilogy story alone and untouched. The only way Hollywood can make things right by now is with Deepfake and AI generated characters and that tecn is just around the corner, in fact, its fully playsable before this year is over. Problem is, they can never undo the trash they already done and that will be a gigantic stain both in history and in peoples minds...

I was born in 1984 when the original Terminator first hit the big screen and with respect, Linda Hamilton is not wrong about the Terminator franchise being done to death. Please Mr. H and subscribers hear me out. I liked Terminator: Dark Fate, but however, I think the problem with Dark Fate is that the franchise run out of ideas, and it was just a rehash of all the previous movies. Arnold Schwarzenegger is nearing 77 and he's too old now to play the Terminator. But, whatever happens, he will always be the Terminator and we will love him for it. Maybe The Terminator saga wasn't meant to have continuation after T2. One of the greatest and best movies ever. I don't blame Linda Hamilton for walking out on the franchise. I would have loved to have seen Emilia Clarke come back as Sarah Connor. A Terminator reboot is unnecessary and it's time for the Terminator franchise to be terminated.

If that series were to be released today on Netflix, I think it could be a big hit. Serialized content didn't work on network TV back then (i.e. if people didn't tune into TV every week at the same time and missed an episode, they wouldn't understand the story).

Linda accidentally hit the nail on the head with her assessment of Sarah. We don't love Sarah because she's some superhero - we love her because she's deeply flawed and her evolution of necessity from waitress to soldier is something everyone can relate to. She proves that no matter how much you screw things up, you can still turn your life around and make a major impact on the future (although the average person isn't likely to save the world from assassin androids). If they want to continue the Terminator franchise, they need to scrap the idea of reboots, move past the Connor family and T-1000, and focus on the rise of Skynet and how it affects various OTHER groups of survivors around the world. There's so much that could be told, but the original duology pretty much closed the paradox that led to Skynet, so there's no point in going back to Sarah and John. Hell, the T-1000 series came in different shapes and sizes to facilitate infiltration, so you don't even need Arnold in the role to make it work. Have an overweight truck driver-type T-1000 infiltrate a shelter and slaughter everyone at the beginning just to reinforce that you never know who the enemy is. Terminator has a perfect horror movie setup, so have some fun with it and do a slasher. Conversely, how about a story where Skynet is created from recovered data, but with the data being incomplete (because they no longer have the Terminator's chip due to the events in T2), the new system is flawed and a group of humans are trying to stop the system from coming fully online because it was found to be unstable and likely to become homicidal (ala GlaDOS or even HAL). There are so many ways you could take the franchise without retreading the same ground ad infinitum, but Hollywoke doesn't have enough brain cells left to rub together and start a fire, let alone figure out how to work a mental lightbulb.

The idea of ciclic bubble in time is really smart and great for story telling... We just need another T3 based on the future, maybe even connected to Salvation...

Re-release Terminator 2 with the original ending where they stopped judgement day and give us 3 legit future war movies leading up to the first terminator being sent back if you want to milk it. Easy fix.

The hard & unpopular answer to keeping the Terminator movies going is to reboot & recast with new characters for a new timeline, but then who’d watch it?

Honestly, I hope they reboot the Terminator franchise. It's been run into the ground and become quite convoluted. However, I hope they don't focus solely on the John Connor storyline. I'd prefer to see a broader exploration of the conflict between the two factions, or possibly even more factions. There's vast potential in exploring these dynamics, which could be much more interesting than the repetitive savior death loop.

No. Terminator storyline was about changing the future with our actions in present time. That's the point of "no fate" plot in Terminator before T3 crap happened. Creators of T3 didn't get that too and their movie was one of the worst. Can't imagine a worst Terminator movie than 3, it's a completely disaster and parody.

I've been wanting to see the future war ever since I saw Terminator II in my teens. Terminator Salvation wasn't it so that desire still goes unsated. But, THAT's what I want to see. Not rehashes and 'Oh, yet another terminator has been sent to the past.' Nor a 'Whoops! John Connor was accidentally brought to the future. (Although, that would be a good way to have the cycle reinstate even though it was broken in Judgement Day. )

It just kills me that this is a franchise about a world ending future war, and the only movies we can seem to get are the same thing over and over and over again. We have an entire war and history of that conflict to pick stories from, and we just keep doing the same thing again and again and again. It just blows my mind.move the franchise to the future. Stop sending people back to the past and making bad versions of your own movies! It’s very simple.

I have the first two Terminator films on DVD and that's enough for me. Some ideas, such as the ones behind Terminator, Predator, and Jurassic Park, are good for one or two films, and then you've exhausted the possibilities and there's nothing new left to do with them. Yet studios try to extend these series indefinitely. It just doesn't work. Cameron should forget about Terminator and finish the Alita trilogy.
