Lindores Abbey & Distillery

Lindores Abbey can lay claim to the earliest written record of whisky being made here in 1494. It is most likely that it was being made long before this but the written records show that King James commissioned the Monks at Lindores Abbey to make 8 bolls of Aqua Vitae (Water of Life). This was the name commonly given to whisky back then. 8 bolls were equivalent to 400 bottles of whisky.

Lindores single malt whisky is highly recommended and the tour of their distillery is well worth visiting if you are in the area.

The hollowed out coffins of the Princes and the Black Douglas look like they’ve been grave robbed. Is that the case? Or is that appearance due to missing pieces of their respective monuments?

The honest answer is I don't know. BUT during the period of the Reformation in the mid-1500s many Catholic churches and buildings were ransacked. So it is possible that they may have been looted. At the very least it would simply be the passage of time. Most of the rest of the abbey has disappeared.

Talking of coffins, this place is owned by Russians with a link to a Russian arms company and possibly Putin himself.
