For nearly 1000 years, the tower of London has been the site of the bloody executions of some of England’s most famous historic figures. And many of the tower’s victims were laid to their final rest within the walls, never to escape the prison where they met their tragic end. A King, 3 Queens, A Prince, 5 dukes and many more noble men and women were buried here. Let’s meet them and learn how they met their doom at the tower of London.
Thomas Seymour, Baron of Sudley (1549)
Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset (1552)
Sir Ralph Vane & Sir Thomas Arundell (1552)
John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland (1553)
Lord Guildford Dudley (1554)
(Queen) Lady Jane Grey (1554)
Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk (1572)
Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland (1585)
Sir John Perrott (1592)
Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel (1595)
Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex (1601)
Sir Thomas Overbury (1613)
Thomas Lord Grey of Wilton (1614)
William Howard Viscount Stafford (1680)
Arthur Earl of Essex (1683)
James Scott, Duke of Monmouth (1685)
George Jeffreys, Baron Jeffreys (1689)
John Rotier (1703)
Edward Lord Griffin (1710)

Queen Jane and her sisters... they're my favourite historical characters. I only discovered more about her earlier this year and I was deeply impressed by her. I'd say she's my favourite historical character. It's odd in a good way, how history has this power to still move your heart after 470 years, how it can make you admire someone you've never met from a country you've never been to who lived in a time long before your own.

@@michelereesPretty much, too many people blames Mary for it not Jane Grey father who sealed her fate. Elizabeth did the same thing to Queen Mary of Scott who threatened her throne, therefore sentenced her to death. Do anyone get mad at Elizabeth for it? Nope, it's all because Mary is Catholic and Elizabeth is Protestant.
@muttstersmart
@muttstersmart 9 ай бұрын
@@BiG-JuPO1O1 I agree. It wasn’t just traumatising for Jane, it was for Mary to. She had to live with the fact she executed a 16 year old cousin who had never wanted to steal the Throne. It’s true, Mary did burn Protestants, including pregnant women, but Elizabeth executed Catholics. When Mary executes her cousin with a claim to the Throne, she gets hate for it, but when Elizabeth does it (after keeping her cousin with the claim imprisoned for 19 years, refused to see her son for most of it and then not buried in France like she requested) she is considered the best Monarch England ever had?

Hello Lindsay! Would you consider making a series of videos about Portuguese monarchs? We had four dynasties (the third is composed of just three Spanish kings, the Habsburg or the Philippine dynasty) and a lot of interesting stories to tell. You already covered the story of Pedro I and Inês de Castro. Pedro and his father Afonso are part of the first dynasty (House of Burgundy in English, Casa de Borgonha in Portuguese), but we usually refer to the first dynasty as something to the effect of "Afonsine Dynasty", because of the other Burgundy Dynasty. That dynasty was founded by Afonso Henriques, the Conquerer and first King of Portugal and its last monarch was the "only" legitimate son of Pedro I (if we don't count his matrimony with Inês de Castro valid, which most don't). The first monarch of the second dynasty (the Avis Dynasty, or the Joanine Dynasty, probably the most famous one because of the Descobrimentos era and the alliance with the British) was... an illegitimate son of Pedro I: João, Master of Avis (a catholic and military order), also know as "of Fond Memory", because he was the monarch who ruled the longest and he was widely approved and appreciated during his tenure (except the Spanish, of course). But no, unfortunately, he was not one of the children he had with Inês, but a single child born during a dalliance with a lady named Teresa Lourenço. João I was the one who married Philippa of Lancaster and fathered the Illustrious Generation (or Ínclita Geração). Now, a story that most don't know: there are conspiracy theories that alluded to the possibility of Afonso Henriques not being the son of the Count Henrique/Henry of Burgundy. There is a legendy that says the infant was born with a debilitating disease on his feet and that the young prince died during a trip with his tutor (Egas Moniz) to some therms in the north to be cured. With the fear of being punished for the death of the count's only son, he purchased a infant of a peasant in Trás-Os-Montes and made him pretend to be the deceased infant. That is why many judge that Afonso was such a great knight and warrior even after he was born with a debilitating disease on the feet and was pretty tall and healthy in comparison to his parents (Afonso was above 1.80 m vs. the 1.50-1.60 m of his parents) and he lived until the age of at least 76.

The Thomas Howard you have in your video is the incorrect Thomas. Thomas Howard the 3rd Duke of Norfolk was arrested with his 29 year old son Henry Stafford. Henry Stafford was executed by Henry VIII but Thomas (his father) was spared by Henry death. The Thomas Howard that matches this date was the one executed by Elizabeth in 1572 was the grandson of the 3rd duke. His father was Henry Stafford which you seem to have missed completely. Even a simple google search could have told you all this

It's probably my slow ageing brain, but please slow down just a bit for those of us who want to actually remember what you've spoken about! 😅 Or perhaps it's just too much info on too many people at once? You refer and highlight Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk 1572. You state that a paranoid Henry VIII had him imprisoned aged 11 with his father and that his father was executed, but the day before his execution, Henry VIII died. Henry died in 1547, how on earth could he execute someone in 1572? Also, you'll find Thomas' father and Grandfather lived into their 80's. Your fictional story about an 11 year old dodging the axeman simply doesn't add up!
@cherrytraveller5915
@cherrytraveller5915 10 ай бұрын
You are correct. The one who dodged the axeman was a fully grown adult and not a child. Thomas Howard that died in 1572 is the grandson of the Thomas that dodged the axeman. The Thomas Howard that missed the axeman was the Uncle of Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard. It was his son that died at Henry VIII hands but his name wasn't Thomas and he wasn't a child. He was also a Henry.

You have several facts incorrect. First, Dudley was never "Regent." Second, Dudley did not "force" Jane Grey to marry his son Guildford. Third, Guildford's precise age is unknown because his date of birth is not recorded and his age is never stated in any of the primary sources. Fourth, there is no documentation whatsoever to support the claim that Jane Grey, Guildford Dudley, and Henry Grey were buried in the Chapel of St Peter-ad-Vincula. That claim is largely the product of mythmakers eager to enthrall the tourists at the Tower of London. This video follows the NOVELS of Richard Davey, Hester Chapman, Allison Plowden, Mary Luke, and Alison Weir while ignoring the primary source evidence.
