Fly Tying the Killer Shrimp Ear 4K

Shrimp patterns and hares ear type flies work well all year around. This time of year on large and small stillwaters they are particularly good though. This weeks tying tutorial is a simple enough task and it uses a number of tying techniques that can be used across many patterns.

A great blend of the best of two effective patterns. With your usual twists. Two of them especially leap out. The use of the partridge breathers adds movement, life and an almost subconscious subtle aim point. Without risking spooking the trout or grayling. Also adding resin to the thorax cover is very useful for protecting that part of the fly. Especially on the latex cover on Mary type nymphs. Or when pheasant tail fibres are used on nymph thorax covers

Howzit Lindsay, this fly has been working a treat in the Drakensberg Stillwater’s of South Africa, especially for the bigger trout. A must have on my initial cast, I think it’s an excellent suggestive pattern without the bling. Love the channel and the diverse content, keep up the excellent work very informative and entertaining. Thanks for your reply Lindsay, perhaps I'll the some with the breathers and some without. I did the some and added Veniard's red damsel eyes to them. Some shrimp dressings suggest using a grub style book to create the curved profile but then suggest adding lead strips on top of the book to accentuate the curve. By doing this will it not become top heavy and make it fish upside down? What are your thoughts?

I tie lots of shrimp patterns on curved hooks, I sometimes use leads to weight the flies as for the way it makes the fly fish.... I don't think it makes a blind bit of difference, if the fish want it they will smash it whatever its doing. I have watched the shrimp in Grafham and they are all over the place and look different depending on what they are doing. Hope that helps Mike.

Another great looking fly which will soon be added to my fly box. Just wondering if the partridge breathers are absolutely necessary as they seem to be hidden within the thorax and body dubbing. Always look forward to your videos.

Sir, I must protest. I’ve now watched the video several times but still can’t find any point when you actually tie in the shrimp’s ear. Are you trying to deceive us with a false title? Just kidding. I couldn’t resist. It is a properly scruffy fly which looks effective. Thank you.
