So I thought it' a nice day to check out the old videos on my favorite channels... I don't know why, but those basics videos, where someone explains a medium, are always super interesting to me. And this is actually the best watercolor basics video I've seen, I wish this would have been around for me to watch when I started painting, this would have probably spared me a lot of headaches and disappointments. And I must say that those glasses suit you very well.

I can't tell you how many classes I've taken in an effort to learn how to watercolor. Yet I've actually come away with little information (and feeling bad about how little talent I seem to have). Thank you for this video. I'm going to subscribe because the knowledge you impart is worth so much. I've wasted a lot of time and treasure it seems. I come away from your videos being able to actually create something. Plus feel good about it all!

Hullo Lindsay! I love watching your older videos, you are a tremendous artist and instructor! You have a lovely manner and you impart so much information about this sometimes confusing medium. I love that you have one of your original brushes! I remember when my Gran was teaching me to paint and she used a number 12 Kolinsky brush for most if not all of her paintings! I did get a gift from her of some of the brushes she used for many years before she passed away. I believe that this has become my number one video to recommend to beginners! You have created a wonderful beginners video and your still creating beginner friendly videos! I am going to mirror another viewer comment and mention that you look lovely with your choice of glasses! I know that has absolutely nothing to do with your expertise in painting, but sometimes ladies enjoy a compliment now and then. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us. Oh as a native Californian (born in SanFrancisco) I want to say you are going to have to swallow tubes of paint to contaminate yourself with Cobalt or Cadmium. Swallowing a sip from your paint cup will not send you to the grave! I know that the warning labels are for our protection and they are needed by some people, but I believe if you use common sense you should be just fine. Please take care and thanks for leaving us this precious video available for everyone to see and learn from.

Hi Lindsay! New subscriber here. I am getting into watercolor, for the first time ever! I recently got a set, that contains the following colors: Lemon Yellow Cadmium Yellow Cadmium Red Pale Cadmium Red Hue Alizarin Crimson Hue Purple Lake Cerulean Blue Hue Ultramarine Sap Green Viridian Hue Yellow Ochre Burnt Sienna Burnt Umber Chinese White My question is, is this: In the list it says Cerulean Blue, is that the same (or close) shade, tone, or tint to thalo blue? And if not what would you recommend as an alternative? Also, I do not draw well, but is drawing an absolute requirement? Thanks!

Nattale Mcdonald The student paints are less likely to be easier to activate once you let them dry in your palette. If you go for the student grade, try squeezing the size of a dime or quarter at a time instead of filling the well like you would with M. Graham or Daniel Smith.

thank you so much Lindsay for telling how to fix a misshapened brush. I'm fairly new to watercolor but had found a beginners set of winsor and newton cotman water colours for super cheap. it's the tips and techniques set. it came with 6 basic colors, a small round brush and a small pad of watercolor paper (abt A5 size-ish) that had a few tips and techniques on it. I got it for a steal at ross's for only $4! there was nothing wrong with it except the brush was crammed in this tiny little plastic slot in front of the tubes. it's a size 4? round W&N cotman brush but had no protective sleeve and didn't even look like a round brush. it was bent like an "S" and the bristles were all spread and didn't come to a point, kinda like they do on a round brush sorta. I thought there was no saving it till I tried the dish liquid trick. thanks Lindsay! I'm truly gonna get every dimes worth of my $4! lol😁

@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 9 жыл бұрын
Sarah M Are you in the US? You can get small travel palettes at ACmoore and other big craft store but use a coupon because they are over priced. A Art Supply store like Blick is better if you have one and they have coupons too you can use in store. The larger palette I have here is a Jones and you buy it empty and squeeze the tube paint in it, I recommend Graham paints because they are made to squirt in a palette and let dry. If you have a small art supply store in town that is local they are good too, they are perceived to be more expensive but not usually, they just do not mark everything up so that they can have a fake sale LOL Pluse the shop keepers can give you better advice on the products than you will get a t a craft store.

I always have a problem knowing warm and cool colours. are warm colours darker??or are they lighter??? can you help please
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 10 жыл бұрын
Warm and cool colors are defined two ways, if you slice a color wheel in half the blue/green/purple side is cool colors and the red orange yellow is warm. Warm colors advance and cool colors recede. But you can have a cool or warm version of each primary color, so if a yellow leans toward green (lemon yellow) it is a cool yellow but if it leans toward orange (cadmium yellow deep) it is a warm yellow. Knowing this helps you make bright mixed colors:)

The Mission Gold, pure pigment set, you review, has a video, (suggested by a viewer). The video shows an artist setting up a pallette with Mission Gold pure pigment. It shows a pallete with mult6iple colors in a single well. Is this common practice? Lindsey, you frequently mention rainbow order. it seems I don't know what this is. It is not ROY G. BIV. it is some representation of the color wheel translated to the not wheel shape of a pallette. The order is yellow, orange, red.... something. could you explain this? Thanks!
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 7 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I do not care for arranging my pallette as they show, with multiple colors in a well, I feel like it is a recipe for waste. I premixed a sap green from my pure pigment set and immediately regretted it. By rainbow order I mean like a color wheel, spectrum order to make color mixing intuitive:)

I know i am not Lindsay, but snap means the springiness of a brush. if a brush doesnt snap well, when you put a stroke down on the paper with the brush, and lift it back, the brush wont snap back to its original shape, and you will have to reshape it yourself.

So in a general rule is if you don not have the intention of getting muddy colour , it is best to have warm colour mixing with warm colour and coll with cool? Also sap green is warm as it leans to the yellow? Whereas alizarin crimson leans to purple so is cool?

I think I would benefit from some direct instruction about "rainbow order". I seem to lack Intuitive understanding. You make everything so accessible, I seem to be enjoying watercolor even though I'm not a natural. Sorry to be so dense.

@@thefrugalcrafter how can you prime it for watercolor. I have a bunch of small canvasses that I'd like to paint and put in a small easel. Thank you for answering my question, I respect your knowledge.

Lindsey, I heard of and tried another way to get your brushes back to a good point; is to dip it into boiling hot water. I just put some water in a coffee cup, stuck it in the microwave (be careful removing a hot cup from the microwave) and then dipped the brush into the water. It worked for me. One thing is tho... I cringe when I see you touching your brush bristles, I've always heard the oil on your fingers and hands were bad for your bristles and not to touch them. Guess you don't believe in that and since you've had one of your brushes for 30 years it must not be true.

I've recently started trying watercolour but it is SO HARD because I'm colourblind and keep having to ask my 7-year old daughter "What colour is this?" "Is this the same colour as in the video?" sigh...

Tracy Gillon - I know Lindsey can sure pack in a lot of info in a short amount of time. We can pause the video or rewind but that often is not a good solution. Have you ever tried changing the speed of the video? It's in the little drop-down menu you get by clicking on the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the video screen. If I change it to .75, Lindsey still sounds like normal, but the talking speed is slower. It's like going from 100 miles an hour down to 75. If I change it to .50, it's even slower, but still not very distorted. She just sounds verrrry relaaaaxed ☺️ which you may or may not find quite hilarious. She offers so much and seems to work hard at continually making good videos and giving a lot of great information.
