I hope you don't mind but I shared your video on my FB page. I just wanted to contribute and give you a little more exposure... As beautiful as Ragland Road, is, it is not the easiest to play and get right. Growing up in an Irish community in London, I heard this song played many times by many people, and you nailed it... I play it often...

How on earth do you have 127 views on this video? This version of Raglan Road is extraordinarily beautiful - love your guitar, your bouzouki, and your voice. One of my favorite versions I've ever heard
@LindsayStraw10 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It used to have more, but my old KZbin account wasn't associated with the email I use for music business purposes and Google+, so I transferred my videos over, and in doing so, I lost all my old view counts and subscribers! Kind of annoying, but worth it to streamline everything.

Lovely version Lindsay - I'll come back to playing this along with Maurice Dickson's version, and Mary Black too; the rest (inc Luke Kelly) I'll leave to those who have different musical tastes. Ok - what else of yours can I listen to right now......

+Lowdenjim Hi, you should listen to Irish singer Caitlin - Raglan Road
@Lowdenjim9 жыл бұрын
+sainglain Yes - she is quite a nice singer and does a decent version, but Lindsay has better breath control and ( in my opinion) superior phrasing and a smoother, more pleasant voice.

Incredibly beautiful...EVERYTHING about it..even the stunning sunset in the background...make a great presentation. Would you mind sharing your chord progression ? I'm also curious as to how you overdubbed the vocals, etc. As an older guy...with poor computer skills...can't see how you did that. Sophisticated equipment ? Anyway...just beautiful. Want more !
@LindsayStraw6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The chord progression is just a standard I-IV-V in G progression with the capo on 3; I occasionally subbed in a Cadd9 for C, G/B for regular G, D/F# and D/A for regular D, and threw in an Em sub for C in the 3rd or 4th verses. As far as recording, I wasn't manning the computer for this one, but as far as I remember we recorded in Logic or Protools, doing the vocals & guitar at the same time, then overdubbing the bouzouki and second vocal. Nothing particularly fancy - you could do the same in GarageBand. There's some nice reverb and EQ on everything that's far above what you'd get in GarageBand, though.

Really nice job! I enjoyed it very much, and I'm a huge fan of Billy Bragg (although I know he only covered this song). As a fellow musician/guitar player, I thought you did a great job, this is a tough song to sing, and you definitely did it justice. That's my two-cents anyway. After all, I'm not trying to change the world, I'm not looking for New England...
@LindsayStraw10 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'll have to check out his version, I don't think I've heard it yet.
@nickjwood8410 жыл бұрын
Yeah, please do check it out. I though you may be a fan because he does a popular cover of Raglan Road. If you don't know him the last part of my comment probably didn't make sense, he does another song called "A New England", that's a really good one as well. And "Between the Wars", those two are worth giving a listen. You can hear them here on KZbin.
@LindsayStraw10 жыл бұрын
Nick Wood Ahh, I was a little confused by that part of your comment! I think I've heard some of his songs, but never a full album, and not those songs, as far as I'm aware. Thanks for the suggestion!
@jmorra6 жыл бұрын
fantastic version -- tuning and chords!! Please!
@LindsayStraw6 жыл бұрын
Hi John - it’s just standard tuning, regular chords in the key of G, but lots of inversions - D/F#, D/A, G/B, some Cadd9s, etc.!
@TheAlextex10 жыл бұрын
Really nice cover and such an amazing voice ! Could you tell me which chords did you use?
@LindsayStraw10 жыл бұрын
Sure! It's nothing too complicated. Basically it's in G (or rather, Bb with the capo on 3rd fret), and I use a lot of add 9 chords, thirds in the bass, etc. The main progression is: G - Cadd9 - G - Cadd9 - D/F# - G // C - G - G/C - D/A // Cadd9 - G - G/B - Cadd9 - D/F# // G - D/F# (higher, F# on the 4th string) - C/E - Cadd9 - D/F# - G // The third verse is simpler, with even less going on, but such a pain to write out! Basically, hold down a D on the B string, and imply the chords with just the bass notes, leaving all the middle strings open. If that doesn't quite help you, let me know, and I'll try to think of some other way to get the idea across!

I'm looking for a good version of this.Not found any. The melody is traditional ( the dawning of the day)and beautiful.Most versions imho are too slow, syrupy and/or overproduced.Needs to be simply sunf imho This is nice! Well done.
