This collaboration between Lindsey Stirling and Pentatonix singing "Radioactive" from one of my favorite bands, Imagine Dragons, left me stunned, giddy and relatively in awe of the sheer amount of talent present. The song itself is about the world becoming different, breaking free by trying something new, and using a post apocalyptic backdrop just slayed those expectations.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Lindsey Stirling and Pentatonix collaborate and perform "Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons.

Kevin has actually been beat boxing while playing the cello before he ever started with PTX. In fact, when Scott was putting the group together to be in the NBC show "Sing Off", he discovered a KZbin video Kevin recorded while he was living in China. Kevin calls this, "celloboxing".

OMG I can’t believe you didn’t know about Kevin playing cello lol. He’s classically trained and created what he coined “cello-boxing” where he beatboxes while playing. Actually, when Scott was looking for a beat boxer to complete PTX for the Sing Off, he found Kevin on KZbin bc he had this viral video of him playing Julie-O and beatboxing. Kevin had his own KZbin channel where he has tons of covers (singing too). He also has an album titled The Renegade of his cello playing You may want to check out his cover of “Down” by Marion Hill. He plays electric cello(really cool), sings and beat boxes using a loop. Is amazing! FYI- let’s congratulate Kevin in becoming a father on Saturday! 😀

They all actually have this incredible ability to blend their voices perfectly or let their voice poke out individually whenever they choose. They have some big harmonies that they do where they sound like one big voice, then change their sound just enough to stand out for a second and then fall back into the group sound, like a little sprinkling of their individual styles.

Kevin actually started playing cello at 6 years old. He was in a number of community orchestras when he was young, and played first chair in the Yale Symphony Orchestra while he was there (doing pre-med). He's also an incredible saxophonist, and toured Europe as the principal saxophonist of the United States Collegiate Wind Band when he was only 12 years old. During high school, he performed twice at Carnegie Hall. Once in a piano trio as the winner of the American Fine Arts Festival, and once playing saxophone. As others have said, his own KZbin channel doesn't have a lot of songs, but the ones he's done are incredible. If you really want to hear his cello sing, check out his cover of "Stay With Me." It's maybe the most incredible cello sound I've ever heard. On another note, have you looked at Jonathan Young's "Bells of Notre Dame"?

I absolutely adore your reactions. I had about 10 years of classical piano training, and I certainly appreciate your technical analysis. But even more than that, you obviously have a great feeling for emotional impact, and the reasons why certain techniques are used or combined at different times to produce a certain arrangement. And to bring all of your knowledge and insights to your live reactions with such passion and yes, even geeking out, gives my soul a sublime happiness and cozy warmth. It's easy to geek out over this combination of musical prodigies. In fact, this very video introduced me to Pentatonix; I was a huge Lindsey Stirling fan at the time and was eating up everything she did. Her combination of musical and movement artistry is like nothing I had ever seen, or have seen since. But after this, I fell deep down the rabbit hole and became a die-hard Pentaholic, so this video holds a dear place in my heart. I'm thrilled you discovered it, and I couldn't be happier with your reaction.

This is one of two collaborations they've done, the other being Papaoute (not sure if I spelled that right). Also, Pentatonix has done a lot of original music as well. Their latest album (released in February) is made up entirely of originals. This video was shot at Salton Sea Beach in southern California. This is an inland saltwater "sea" (it's actually a large lake) that was a popular tourist destination in the first half of the twentieth century, until a major ecological disaster took place, leaving it largely abandoned and looking rather, as you said, post-apocalyptic. It's actually a fascinating place to visit...a few hundred people still live there. It was actually Kevin's ability to "cello-box" (playing cello and beatboxing at the same time, a term he actually invented) that led to him joining Pentatonix in the first place!

I’m surprised that you didn’t give more credit to Kevin playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time. By the way Kevin was first chair cellist in the orchestra at Yale, and has played cello and saxophone at Carnegie Hall before joining PTX. The man is probably the most classically trained of all the members, and arguably the most talented.

This was one of my early favorites of Pentatonix. It is also how I found out about Lindsay. I have followed her ever since. You can definitely see the growth in her dancing after she was on Dancing With The Stars. I have not seen very many people reviewing this song, so thank you very much for a wonderful review!

I love Pentatonix (and Lindsey Stirling, she's incredible!), but in my opinion Avi's solo music is just phenomenal, and different in a way that kinda makes you understand why he had to take a step back to make it. Whether it's something deep like "Aberdeen" or surprisingly light like "Quarter past four".

If you like Imagine Dragons, than check out VoicePlay‘s cover of „Warriors“. It’s really epic and also post-apocalyptic. Layne and J. None both play the violin in that cover as well which is super awesome! And by the way, don‘t forget to check out Tomi P‘s cover of Hellfire. If there‘s one a cappella artist you don’t want to miss out on, it‘s Tomi P. I promise.

Ugh jeez. It’s kinda impossible to not like your videos. Your obviously authentic love for music and the artists who make it... it is refreshing. I love that you can separate and appreciate literally every part of a performance. (Individual Voices, runs, swells, harmonies, dissonance, background notes, instruments, choreography, location, wardrobe, makeup, etc) Most people are fans.. we love the music and the performances. People like you though, I always consider musical scientists. You are excellent at what you do, and we appreciate it. 👩🏼‍🔬

@@drieuxkoeppel8152 It may be the choice in songs but I haven't enjoyed the newer music. I still go back to the earlier releases. I've preferred HomeFree more lately and county is down the list of genres for me. I think I peaked with PTX with Imagine and Bohemian Rapsody. It's hard to top either for me.

Ever since Avi left, I've been listening to his solo stuff more than PTX with Matt. The original group had a special chemistry that will never be matched. Their vocals mixed so well. Matt is OK, but Avi's voice will never be matched.

This version blows away the original. Big fan of Lindsey and Pentatonix and this collab is the equivalent of a nuclear explosion I never thought that there could be a more haunting instrument than the violin, but the cello is right up there.

I love the original. I love this one even more. It's perfection. Lindsey is always amazing. Kevin's cello playing is as pure and lyrically expressive as his singing voice and the fact that he can do it while beatboxing is superhuman. Scott's voice has the perfect grit and texture for this song. Kirstin and Mitch are doing so much in the background to add delicious flavor. Avi's warm rich bass is ear love. Plus he is a beautiful, beautiful man, but that has nothing to do with the music. This is the collaboration I didn't know I needed until I heard it. Now I regularly go back and listen to it when I need an injection of pure awesome.

One of my all time favorite music videos. The visuals are stunning too and fit very well. Costume design, camera work and whole setting gives this post apocalyptic feeling. Placement of the characters throughout the song also plays into telling the story. Lindseys dancing is awesome, love that pirouette into kick around the middle of the song she does, feels like she is an anime char doing some crazy power move.

This was the very first song I heard from Pentatonix. I had been playing the mmo Defiance and they use "Radioactive" in one of their game trailers. In looking for the music video, i came across the Pentatonix video and fell in love with their arrangement. From there, I found "The Sing Off" and it was off to the races. I was hooked.
