+fidur2 That is very different. When Reinhold Messner climbed Everest without oxygen, he did something even more difficult than Hillary and Tenzing. Messner was (along with Habeler) the first person to climb Everest without the aid of oxygen. He wasn't the first Tyrolean to climb Everest (although of course he was but no-one cares).
@fidur28 жыл бұрын
Joshua Rosen I know Messner! I kinda feel sorry for him. Lost his brother doing what he loved. Also, being the first person to ever climb all 8Km+ mountains in the world is quite a feat on it's own, no need to speak of the first no-oxygen ascent. Anyway, I kinda disagree with Loyd in some aspects of this video.

To be fair, I'd be pretty damn impressed at the first quadriplegic to climb Mt Everest solo. If there was something that categorically differentiated you in terms of ability from predecessors, then I would say that that is worthy of some recognition. Then there are some tasks that I don't think it matters if you were the first to do it or not, accomplishing it or surviving it at all is what's impressive. There's any number of war stories from around the world of people who have survived multiple incursions with a decreasing number of limbs, organs, and sense and ultimately accomplished their goals.

Was about to comment basically the same thing. The real issue here is that the "categorisation" first has expanded. Older examples are almost all first (person of a category that makes the task different in kind) to achieve the task. And slowly expand to include identity categorisations. Even early uses of first woman to x or first black person to x were because in the existing culture and climate of the time it was a significantly harder task for a woman or black person to have done x. Amelia Earheart's transatlantic flight for instance was worthy of note, not because the actual flight was harder, I'm sure her and Lindbergh faced much the same difficulty but because for a woman to have become an aviator both capable of doing it and having enough respect from other aviators to be given the opportunity to do it was an achievement in the 30's.

Robert Falcon Scott and his team reached the south pole and, because of either bad luck or poor planning, did not survive the return journey. In honour of his great feat, his wife was granted the title Knight Widow, he had a research institute named after him and several monuments celebrating him... Roald Amundsen, who not only also reached the pole, but did so five weeks BEFORE Scott, and survived the return? Greeted with utter indifference and, at a banquet to celebrate the victors, was treated to a toast... dedicated to the dogs that pulled him there... So sometimes, we do remember the second one better than the first. They just have to make sure they die in the attempt.

Actually I remember there being a bit of controversy over Halle Berry's Oscar. That same year a bunch of Australians got Oscars, like Baz Lurman and Russell Crowe or something and a lot of people thought Nicole Kidman should have got it for Moulin Rouge, but rather than give another Australian award they gave it to a hot token black actress who's acting abilities are generally regarded as being pretty shit.
@koalabrownie9 ай бұрын
No, that's not the controversy imo. When Halle Barry won, Denzel Washington also won AND they gave an honorary Oscar to Sidney Poitier. So it did seem like very much like a coordinated, political move rather than simply based on merit. Which doesn't prove the two were undeserved, especially in the case of Denzel who now has no less than 10 Oscars. Also I don't think Halle really opened the door when in the 21 years since then, no other african american woman has won best actress (though many have won best supporting). Though maybe that says more about who is being cast as lead actress

How about youngest and oldest? There's something admirable about achieving physical feats when your body is either way below or way past the "physical prime." There's this Japanese girl who scaled a professional-level cliff when she was barely 13, and a British woman trekked *alone* across the Antarctic when she was *60*
@Bane_questionmark8 жыл бұрын
+Vito C I mean, staying alive is technically a physical feat, but based on the actual age of the current oldest person, the fact that they were healthy enough and survived that long was just blind luck. Like, can you imagine living to 120 growing up without most of the health knowledge we know now? Some people just hit the jackpot (or ate a lot of fish). Like that WW2 vet who mows his own lawn with a push mower, drinks a glass of whiskey and smokes two cigars (at least) a day, and says he's never felt better.

Like - "I like mountains, therfore I climb - but hey, does that mean I'm really gonna be first one?"

The Guinness Book of World Records is notorious for doing things like this. For literally every single record to do with being the first at something, it's always the first man, the first woman, the first black man, the first black woman, and continue this on for every gender-race combination that has achieved this "record."

I remember watching a documentary about the building of the Golden Gate Bridge, the biggest suspension bridge in the world at the time. When they finally finished it and opened it to the public it was a huge event and San Franciscans came in a huge mob to cross the bridge on foot. And what absolutely _killed_ me was that every 3rd or 4th person crossing the bridge was carrying some stupid sign announcing themselves as the "first [blank] to cross the Golden Gate Bridge". There was a woman at the front with a sign "first woman to cross the Golden Gate Bridge" and there was a black man with a "first black man" sign and even some asshole in a big wooden hat who'd, and I swear I'm not kidding, dubbed himself "first person in a big wooden hat to cross the Golden Gate Bridge".

I think it depends on whether the sub-group the person belongs to modifies the achievement in some significant way. First person to climb Mt. Everest: notable First Chinese person to climb Mt. Everest: not notable First person over 60 years of age to climb Mt. Everest: notable
@nedwatson9026 Жыл бұрын
I think one of the things that this video misses is that the socio- and geopolitics matter too. It's not really notable to be the first Chinese person to climb Mt. Everest. On the other hand, it _is_ notable to be the first Chinese person to walk on the moon, since it implies that China has the technological expertise to send people to the moon, and that person would be widely celebrated in China. In other words, even if the person isn't "opening doors", it can indeed be significant for members of a group to achieve something for the first time, since other members of that group might well look to them as an example.
@jeice133 ай бұрын
@@nedwatson9026 well first chinese person on the moon either means a country did something already proven by america or that america just repeated something they already did and that was the astronaut they picked. Neither is really a significant first

There are people who break glass ceilings who deserve some recognition. Things like the first black person to be allowed in American professional sports. There are things where race, gender, disability or nationality are the only barrier to doing something mundane, and sometimes people break those barriers though ingenuity or competence.
@lifefindsaway78759 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree that the first of 'oppressed subgroup' is more significant than the first of 'a really specific subgroup' Lloyd makes the point himself in the video, that knowing something is possible makes it easier. Before Barack Obama, it could be said that blacks will never reach the same levels of power in the u.s. That's why the first black, gay, female actress might actually deserve her acceptance speech, so give Hallie her mike back!

I'm actually more intrigued by the second person, or as I call them, the first imitator. The difference is really a matter of whether you have redefined the categorization of the task that you accomplished or whether you redefined the categorization of the person who accomplished the task. First person to climb Mt. Everest without oxygen is significantly different from the first person to climb Mt. Everest the same way everyone else did before but they were the first person to do it born in Australia. The task was the same but the person doing it was different. However, a person's background is sometimes a good indicator of societal changes and trailblazers for disadvantaged groups. First black person to do such and such or first woman to do such and such may still be a noteworthy accomplishment, not because of the task itself, but because of the barriers to entry.

As a scientist (you are an archaeologist, correct?), the value of the second and third people to have done a thing is enormous. When it comes to science, verification, repeatability, is our metric of success. Imagine if we'd stopped with one experiment in cold fusion, or one experiment measuring the charge of the electron. One experiment showing that a particular drug doesnt have "death" as a side effect? If you want to constrain this video specifically to tasks ultimately irrelevant to the progress of man like ascending a rock or winning a fake gold statue of a small man, have at it, but the second and third and every successive verification in science are vital to all we now know (with the possible exception of archaeology.)
@cherry89777 жыл бұрын
The point, as it applies to this example, is that the person who synthesized the procedure is more significant than those that simply followed the procedure to produce the same result.
@htomerif7 жыл бұрын
Wow, not at all. The point was that he has no value for the first black, gay, female or handicapped person to do a thing if its already been done by someone else. _My_ point, since it apparently was not obvious, was that throwing science in there was a stupid thing to do as a "scientist". It shouldn't have been included at all. It muddies the waters because of what I already said. When it comes to science, the person who "synthesized the procedure", by which I assume you mean "came up with a test to verify a hypothesis" is often _not_ the person who first discovers a phenomenon as the tools on the cutting edge of science are often incapable of carrying out said test. Honestly, I wouldn't be making the point at all if it weren't for his nearly legendary failure to understand the scientific method across a dozen or so of his videos. Ill stop there, since thats already too long.

Well, I understand it can be annoying. But on the other hand, its always a subgroup. The first we place a statue for is only the first we know about. How many different statues do we have for the one who first discovered America? Columbus? oh no, we dug up some sort of norman settlement dated way before Columbus.. But hey, weren't there people living there already? How did they get there? Someone must have gone to America way before those normen. Do we even have a statue for him/her? And now we know about this, are we going to remove all statues of Columbus? And what about the kid in the classroom who, when the teacher asked to find America on the map, found it first? Isn't he allowed some pride on his/her achievement? It may well be that the actress in the example didn't know about any of the previous oscar winners.

Though I have to argue, while the "first first" is the interesting one for showing that a particular thing is possible, many people before that very thing probably did similar things for you to allow this to happen. And many people after refined whatever that "first first" was doing, leading to the next considered "big thing". I know this wasn't the point of the video, but I was bugged by that sensationalist view on progress. I don't mean to call you a liar, but that would be one of the top 10 fastest high school miles of any person, anywhere. People who run that fast are pre-olympic runners - not randos who are "not officially on the track team".
@flyswryan Жыл бұрын
My time was corroborated by three coaches, two from other schools, so I took them at their word. I ran a lot for years before, chasing horses, running to school because I missed the bus, and just because I enjoyed it. I trained on hilly country roads. I quit running when I met a man who had run two decades prior, and had one knee and two hip replacements to prove it. I decided that was too high a price to pay later...I still have all my original parts! I also was aware that people who can run really fast and have a lot of stamina, truly are freaks, and I didn't want to get "freak" for a nickname. There are probably thousands of us out there, but they haven't been given the opportunity and encouragement to realize their athletic potential. I had to work to keep my horses fed, thus didn't have time to go to track practice and attend away meets. The team coach was very kind and let me run exhibition at home meets. I wore no pinny, but did wear the team shorts, shirt, and socks. The coach told me I was good for demoralizing the other runners, especially the ones I lapped during my final lap around the quarter mile track.

junoguten Marrying into politics is SO much worse than being born into politics, am I right!? Haha!
@junoguten9 жыл бұрын
KarstenOkk True, they're both not standing on her own two feet. Marrying into it is particularly funny since she's a feminist though :-) You can imagine my shock when I first heard it might come to between Bush #3 and Clinton #2.

junoguten I still don't think too badly of it. It might be necessary for the first one or two female US Presidents to have a little bit of help, and them *actually* paving the way for other women with increased equality in elitist politics.

+KarstenOkk But shouldn't we just pick the best person for the job? If we *help out* the first female Pres., are we really doing them a favor by saying the only way a woman can ascend to the office is with help? Personally, I'm of the opinion that women don't need the help, at least not any more. When the woman comes along who is both talented enough and even interested in politics (which women are less than men statisticly. Actually, if you look at how many women:men run for office and compare it to how many are actually in office, and it turns out a higher percentage of female political candidates actually win, meaning they're *over*represented, but I digress), we will have or first president who happens to have a vagina. But, it really shouldn't matter. Men and women are mostly equal in every way, so it shouldn't actually matter what the president's sex is. Curious why feminists obsess about people's gender, it truly is.

It's quite true that the first person to be able to accomplish a certain feat is always remembered, but there's also the ability for a person to take that great accomplishment away somehow. For example, a person might become famous for being the first person to run the mile in 4 minutes, but they will fade into obscurity when someone is able to do it in 3 minutes. It seems as though if you're able to accomplish a task in less time than the first person, then you somehow obtain that person's fame

I'm 9 years late. But the point about doing it in as short time as possible isn't about doing it first, and not the topic of this video. Doing it first and doing it within the shortest time are two different goals (but the one doing it first did technically do it the fastest at one point).
@mangalores-x_x13 жыл бұрын
I would even dare that there are big problems with the first firsts, too, because in many fields they actually aren't the first but just one instance in a continuous line of development. This is particular true for inventions and the supposedly breakthrough inventors. Most of the time those breakthroughs were simply the logical development of preexisting versions of the same thing and without those research by other people those revolutionary inventors wouldn't have managed their thing.

This is the first video I can't watch without a annoying proxxy server. I just found it funny because of the 'The first (of my) rants with no copyrighted music!' description. The GEMA is a infamous German institution.

What is your opinion about being things like the youngest to do something?
@benlamborn57926 жыл бұрын
I was hoping this video would be about things like the Gutenberg printing press not being the first the Chinese invented one I honestly don't remember when. But it was earlier. Sure they found it to be unusual with the Chinese language but it existed. Europeans also store credit for the waterbase clock from Chinese Columbus store credit for discovering America from the Vikings etc.

You would hate the CN Tower in Canada, it lost the title for "World's Tallest Building" so they keep changing it to things like "Tallest Freestanding Structure" or "Tallest Tower", just so it can be tallest something.

@lindybeige to counter that im reminded of a description of, i think the first woman to take an exam at a prestigous medical school. she was confronted by a pack of hollering, many of them drunk males trying to prevent her from taking the exam. apparently only a concerted effort using hokey sticks to part the crowd, could she enter the exam hall. the whole book addressed statutory and institutional sexism i britain, one example was, that a women could not be legally select for public office.

**I don't really care who's the first to do something. As far as I'm concerned, unless he single-handed achieved something that others didn't even dream of, they are really irrelevant. Every person stands on the shoulders of others. Sometimes, it's just a matter of time that someone will get there first, and someone has to be the first, but it doesn't mean he has contributed a lot to humanity. He could just be lucky that he's the first, not the second.**
