Pffft, everyone knows about the great whale war of 117 B.C. with the Spartans and the Covenant. There's no possible way you haven't atleast heard about it in anyway. But I'll give you a simple recap to re-jog your memory on the subject. The great Spartan leader Leviticus had to destroy the halos so the Covenant couldn't destroy all life in the universe. So the Japanese hired a bunch of sperm whales to help Leviticus cavalry charge through the Covenant forces to destroy the halos. But one of Leviticus'es space ships was named the Pequod, and the whales took offense to this for some unknown reason. And then Leviticus single handedly destroyed all the sperm whales, the Covenant, and the halo, all by himself. Duh.

Regarding the helmets, and the difference between gladiator and legionary helmets: 1. The extra protection is probably because the least survivable injuries would be to the head and neck, and as pointed out, they didn't want their famous gladiators cashing it in. A cut to the shoulder or outside thigh is probably generally survivable. One to the neck, or into the skull, and you're likely gone. And even if you survive, you're going to be out of action for a long, long time, not earning any money. An arm cut will probably heal up in a month if it's not too deep. A sliced-open face or head will likely put you out of action for six months or a year. 2. The legionary helmet is a compromise. They're in an open environment where a threat can come from anywhere, and they're fighting in groups. You would need to be able to see attackers coming from your side or trying to get around behind you. You also need to be able to hear shouted commands or the like, and hear your environment generally. And see what your side is doing, get a feel for the movement of the battle line, generally have a lot of awareness of your whole environment. With a gladiator, though, it's a duel, most of the time. You're focused on one guy and one guy only. You know where he is and don't have to worry about two of his buddies running up on you from 4 o'clock. Nobody is shouting orders at you or waving signal flags farther down the battle line. There's no battlefield to take in tactically. So you can go for straight-forward vision and for the rest, maximize protection, because you don't need to see or hear anything except one guy in front of you. Great presentation, though, very enjoyable! :)

One more point, if the Mexican wrestlers are anything to go by. It would seem that, with so many variations, that each gladiator would have his own helmet style, and so, be easily recognized even from a distance. I can't imagine some of them being easy to wear, they are so ornate, so protection and identification would also be important--not, mind you, that communicating on the sly wasn't an integral part of the design too, but that there were other considerations as well.
@SirThomasJames2 жыл бұрын
Awesome response.
@Demetrios_Gladiator Жыл бұрын
I can add from Experience that during a fight you don't actually hear that much under your helmet and padded cap. So for two guys trying to communicate their moves would be difficult. Also, moving with the helmet on and talk is even more difficult. After like 2 Minutes you already have ventilation problems because there isn't that much airflow under the helmet. It tires you out quite quickly, depending on personal constitution sooner or later.

The helmets resemble fencing and kendo masks in the way they enclose and protect the face and neck. This fits with the idea of gladiators expecting to live to fight again. They would be trained to put on a good show, make big flashy moves that target the shield, weapon, helmet. The pro wrestling parallel is a good one.
@AnimalMotha4 жыл бұрын
Very much agree. The comparison with the Roman soldiers helmet is a bit off, the soldier has to wear his helmet for a really long time compared to a gladiator, so the gladiator can opt for a lot more protection in exchange for a far heavier and more restricting helmet. Also, a stab in the face really tends to cut short a fight, so protecting that part is also in line with keeping the crows entertained.
@hrotha4 жыл бұрын
@@AnimalMotha I agree that having as much head and face protection as possible without having to take into consideration any other task but fighting is the most likely reason for the huge helmets. Besides, if gladiatorial fights started as a much more private affair before becoming a mass spectacle, surely that would have made such kind of cheating quite difficult to pull off. And if that was the main reason for the helmet, then the retiarii would have been given a massive helmet too.
@mtop68674 жыл бұрын
I think the guys who DID get stabbed in the face were better for entertaining the crows...
@annacrow97164 жыл бұрын
@@AnimalMotha also situational awareness is a much bigger deal on a battlefield than in a duel. In a duel all you need to focus on is the person standing right in front of you, and you want to avoid paying attention to anything else, on the battlefield you're surrounded by things that are possibly vitally important to your survival, so helmets often lacked face protection for this reason.
@janmetdekorteachternaam36734 жыл бұрын
I wonder. Because the big difference with pro wrestling is that when your opponent decides (for whatever reason) to go for the kill, you'd be giving him all the opportunity. In order for LB's theory to materialize, there should be reasons to believe that gladiators could trust each other with their lives. The whole ' in three seconds I make a stabbing motion, opening myself up for a counter thrust, but don't do that, just step back' thing would have to rely on trust 100%. Because if on average, every other 'game day' one gladiator dies, that is still a significant risk and not comparable at all to pro-wrestling where nobody died in the last 50 years.

This is my area of expertise 2:11 "most gladiators died" i disagree with that. It is in fact, incorrect to say that MOST gladiators died. As per my university training, the literature, factual evidence and my own research, it is conclusive that ALL gladiators died and none remain alive today. That's unlikely because helmet designs were gladiator class specific and not individual specific. Like secutors would have one type of helmet and murmillos another etc etc. Although maybe some famous individuals did have extremely customized helmets.
@machintelligence5 жыл бұрын
Perhaps it is because soldiers' helmets wouldn't want to limit peripheral vision since situational awareness is necessary on the battlefield. When dueling, which I gather many gladiatorial fights were like, total protection of the head was more critical and you only need to see in a forward direction. I wonder if different headgear was worn in melee contests.

You went on about rich Romans, it started me wondering, where did they keep their money? Did they have banks? Did they dig a hole? I'd Love to see a video about it. Thanks, I've been learning from you for years.
@christophhofland88905 жыл бұрын
it wouldn't surprise me if they had some sort of banking system. Though I can't really think of any evidence for one. the main reason I say they must have had them is that granaries existed for many years before the Romans and they functioned, (more or less) like banks. Actually, it got me thinking that the first granaries were actually religious temples since they were often the biggest publicly available space and if you're a farmer you probably don't have a lot of room in your house for say, a giant basket of fresh grain. It is thought that the first writing systems came from this because the priests of the temple would have to keep track of how much grain and other goods so and so had in their cellar or where ever. Though that's a complete aside. It might be possible then, that the temples functioned much the same way for most of the ancient world. Storing valuable things for people that simply didn't have a room dedicated to all their gold bars and such. Though that requires more research on my part. Its also possible very wealthy people work in the ancient world much like they do today, with their wealth divested amongst a great number of ventures and some sort of "credit" was introduced just to make sure these people could continue to do business without having to have a wagonload of riches to do it.
@jwilde6424 жыл бұрын
I think we Moderns tend to think of wealth being the same as "having lots of money." This isn't even true now. "Wealth" is something that produces. Money is just a measure of the value of a good or service. So, to be wealthy, you need things that produce. Croplands. Vineyards and wineries. Livestock. Mines. Pottery shops. The Rich owned all of these things, and their 'wealth' produced for them things that they could exchange for money to purchase other things. To answer your next question, there weren't 'banks' as we think of them today, where a depositor can drop off a sack of coins and collect interest on the deposit. There *were* moneylenders, people who had a lot of cash and would let you borrow from them for a fee. Marcus Crassus of the First Triumvirate is a good example. He had a lot of cashflow because he was one of the biggest landlords in Rome. (Most of the plebs lived in big multistory apartment buildings, and thus paid rent.) Marcus' gig was waiting for a fire to break out, and then rushing a paid private firefighting force to the scene. The owner had a choice: sell the imperiled building to Marcus for one sestertius on the denarius, (basically 25% of the value of the building, **a number I literally pulled out of my ass, and should be taken only to illustrate the point**) or watch his property go up in smoke. If he sold, Marcus' men put out the fire, repaired the damage, and Marcus started collecting the rents he (the previous owner) was getting. If he didn't sell, he lost his income (his rents) and was faced with having to pay large sums to completely rebuild on his burnt property. It seems like many took the haircut and sold out. For Marcus, most of his 'wealth' was in his rent producing properties. This was a constant stream of income for him, that he could then 'diversify' into more property acquisition the next time a fire broke out, or perhaps lend at interest to another 'wealthy' Roman who had lots of farms and vineyards and livestock, maybe an interest in a tin mine somewhere, plus a share in a tax collection company to draw a comfortable steady income from, but not a lot of cash on hand and who needed lots of money NOW. His borrower had lots of Wealth. He didn't have lots of Money. Marcus arranged to correct this imbalance for a fee. (He also could use his access to ready cash to influence people, which is why Pompey and Caesar wanted him in their little club.)

Alternative theory for the face-obscuring helmets: gladiator fights were *way* more lethal than the people running it let on. If a popular gladiator died, the show-runners wanted to be able to dress up another guy as him and keep the crowds coming. Also might allow popular gladiators to participate in many more bouts than they were physically capable of, if each was actually like three different guys.
@b.w.225 жыл бұрын
I like it - not mentioned was the “visor” and brim of these helmets having a shape so as to channel the sound from directly in front, a bit like a parabolic microphone. It would suggest communication between the fighters even more. Finally, we know that professional wrestlers do just this thing during matches, to minimize injury and to put on the best show. Practical historical archeological analysis. Love it! Now get a couple of reproduction helmets and give it a go: add proof to your pudding.

These guys mustve been the superheroes and villains of their time!
@Chironex_Fleckeri4 жыл бұрын
Adding on, Maybe the gladiators without helmets were more common in death matches? They had to be more expendable. Was the net some indication that the other gladiator was some sort of violent beast? It could be a high stakes fight between a crowd favorite and some low status guy. Perhaps most of these unhelmed gladiators died in horrible fashion and the crowd loved seeing their expressions? Idunno. It's interesting to consider this as a sport.

I realize a fully choreographed, dramatic fighting spectacle might not be the best counterexample, but luchadors wear masks purely for the drama of it. They have no need to obscure their faces to cheat, since they work out the fights in advance, but they do it anyway _for_ the audience -- not despite them. The elaborate, stylized helmets of gladiators could have served the same purpose.
@vincentvt62294 жыл бұрын
