I had a French teacher who was this sort of mild eccentric and would spend entire lessons just telling us stories about his life and random events or people. The most memorable being preceded by him pulling a chunk of concrete from his pocket of the recently fallen Berlin wall. He also taught us much more about life in general, and conduct becoming than was ever part of a curriculum. We learnt very little french in his lessons, and I had always assumed him to be English, but that turns out to be because he was himself educated in England and earned a degree at Cambridge. It was only after he died that I found out he was highly respected French aristocracy, a count from a very old line, and indeed the one person who tempers my class prejudices. He never once mentioned it, showed arrogance or superiority or that "Don't you know who I am" personality defect. A man with power who never sought to wield it against others. Bent as a nine bob note, but a charming eccentric and a fantastic teacher and storyteller. One of few teachers that knew that capturing the imagination is the best way to capture children's attention, and some adults, the one's with a mind that still listens. I had four teachers in my life that were truly exceptional at their jobs, they taught me in turn how to teach effectively. Still some of the best days of my life, despite not having a choice about being there! Some people are born teachers, but the best are also born storytellers. In times of antiquity Lindybeige would have been welcomed to many a table, fed and watered in exchange for the gift of a hypnotic story, to while away the long dark nights.

It saves the Big Man the loss of face from having his slave escape and makes life a little better for Renton upon his return, thus making him less likely to try to flee again....This might have been an attempt at a rather clever move on Kabu's part.

I mean, from their perspective he stole the war canoe, a club and six spears and headed straight to the enemy village. So the most logical explanation was that he was trying to attack them. @@Scasne I don't believe that at all. I think things are especially different there compared to the rest of the world is simply because it's an island. All I really have a problem with is British people (of course not all) are generally more condescending and not funny than they realize. They have these negative opinions of other countries that aren't true in the slightest but they love the smell of their own farts and it's evident "across the pond" Even Irish people are hilarious.
@Scasne3 жыл бұрын
@@CJM-rg5rt Humour is as your first reply subjective (and someone can always come up with something whitty someone once said or should have said after the event far more difficult to do in reality), like any art really, (there can be a long discussion over what is art and what is an art/form). Chatting in digital form without faces/inflections to read from do make things difficult and easy to escalate if people are getting a bit annoyed, but yeah there does seems to be a lot of national touchiness internationally atm. I will say it does often feel as if Hollywood/TV is Pro-American propaganda and particular weird that our actors often play very good villains.
@CJM-rg5rt3 жыл бұрын
@@Scasne it actually makes alot of sense now why British people think so lowly of Americans, I didn't consider the exposure to only the BS. The exposure that formed my opinions is just random idiots online, british youtubers, just a generalized view. My favorite British people like the members of Black Sabbath and Judas Priest aren't this stereotype. About the humor thing though, I really don't think they are onto some esoteric genius like they make it seem "Americans just don't understand hahaha" comedy should transcend these barriers and I don't think good art is super objective for example it would be absurd for a metal fan to think Black Sabbath sucks, someone who sincerely like comedy should naturally flock to "british humor" if it was great.

brilliant reminds me of george macdonald frazer in his flashman and other books not just a good read but contains great chunks of fantastic history now forgotten and the really remarkable characters that lived in those times as lindy himself said on another video its amazing how screen writers often ignore the reality of a historical period and instead insert a cliched story of their own instead.of course writing a more factual account would involve research which writers hate to do and the massive spread of historical novels since the internet show that writers prefer to do their research on line rather than actually visit the place or look at original documents. the recent run of box office flops adapted from tv shows is proof of this.the director and writer never take responsibility for the flop but blame everything else though normally the public stays away because what they are watching bears no resemblance to the much loved show. they then admit they er...never watched the original show before making the film.great video lindy.

Dear Loyd, I am nearing a stage of my life when I as the authoritative source for my village's history has to be formally passed down to my son's offspring. Woe to me though, as none of my incompetent worthless grandchildren has the memory capacity exceeding that of a goldfish. With the traditions and memories of my village at stake, I now seek desperate measures to ensure continuity of our bloodline stories, and am thinking outside the coconut shell. I have heard through grapevine at our local trading post the tales of a legendary white-man raconteur who can recount stories and plot twists with deadly accuracy. After learning how to search and watch KZbin (why would you be stuck in a tube? I don't quite understand, but never mind) videos at a nearby Internet cafe, I'm deeply impressed with your non-stop rambling and digressions and endurance to go without a drink. I believe I have found the perfect worthy successor. As a person who has demonstrated undying passion for things of the past and none of that futurist fantasy nonsense, I am certain you will be highly intrigued and bedazzled by the heroic exploits of our seniors and ancestors. I would like to formally extend to you an employment contract of 15 years for on-site handover of a total of 237, 961 anecdotes. Hopefully that is enough time for one of my inept grandchildren to birth a child who can rival the capacity of one of those shiny rainbow plates you call "Blu-ray". A contract extension is completely possible and negotiable if my great-grandchildren plan requires more time. You will of course be handsomely compensated for your services. First and foremost, you will have the privilege of choosing a wife (or two) from our village. If none of our tribe meets your expectations, we are absolutely prepared to visit other rival villages to recruit suitable candidates of your preference. Secondly you will granted a complete treehouse of your own for accommodation, built with the finest carpentry skills the world has ever seen; our construction includes technologies incorporated from shipwrecks, able to hold timber together against the strongest of storms. In a true case of natural disaster, we guarantee that rather than you home, the trees supporting the structure will break and give way first; you will be secure and safe. Thirdly you will want for nothing when it comes to food and beverages; we have a whole kitchen full of international chefs from all over the globe to cook sumptuous and exotic cuisines. Not a single day of stay here will feel like work, but more like a dream tropical vacation everybody wishes for. In your off days you are always welcomed to participate in our traditional sport, access our state-of-the-art high-accuracy weaponry and sophisticated durable war boats, to go hunting for animals, fish, or other villages' people. If you find this contract to be attractive and agreeable, please do find your way to the Port of Liverpool, locate and board the vessel _HMS Blackteething_ and report to Captain Schwyndler. He is one of the finest elite seamen of this generation, generous and lavish with his beverages to all passengers aboard his ship. His crew are a reputed merry robust bunch, great to hang out with, full of resilience and assurances of no shortage of food even when drifting more than a month at sea. We highly recommend you take up his offer of drinks and enjoy an epic journey and feast across the oceans with them before settling with us for an exciting adventure of storytelling and drama beyond your wildest dreams. Sincerely Yours, Slavordreevor

For those upset that he didn't go on a tangent about the navigating watch, basically it's much harder to estimate longitude than latitude based around the sun and stars, and that was one BIG problem for a big while. The solution was to mark midday on your last known location with a very precise watch and then compare that with midday on some other place to find out how much your time zone and thus longitude has been displaced.

Not really. It’s a way to compare difference in declination/altitude at different times of day from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in London. A celestial body’s Greenwich hour angle (GHA) will differ from Local hour angle (LHA) so if you can measure (by sextant) local hour angle and compre it to the GHA you have a measurement of distance in nautical miles from Greenwich. I have missed some parts but it’s a lot more involved than simply measuring which time zone you’re in.

It's fitting that this episode is sponsored by Audible, because I'd buy a book written and narrated by you in a heartbeat. I love your delivery in all of your videos, the balance you have from your filler words to your descriptions to your hypothetical mind-reads is amazing. You're so wonderfully casual that it's hard to think you have a script for these, you just seem very, very well read. You're ability to paint facts like stories is impeccable, and every time I click on one of your videos I feel like I'm sitting down by the fire for a fantasy. The information in your videos are always stuff I never knew I wanted to know, or things I thought I knew but you blew my socks right off exploring. If you are /not/, to a decent extent, well-researched, or if you're little more than a conspiracy theorist, then you are one of the best actors I've ever known. Your ability to present information in a respectable, trustworthy, and especially human manner is wonderful. When a "fact" based youtuber spends most of the time onscreen, so often it feels I've come across little more than a conspiracy theorist. When a "fact" based youtuber sounds informative and well read, so often they carry the curse of sounding as full of themselves as a 1st year philosophy student. When a "fact" based youtuber excels at telling stories, so often it feels all I've sat around for is a scenario, nothing really to be learned except perhaps some infantile moral lesson. When a "fact" based youtuber actually has good information, they seem to be oddly inept at vocal presentation, awkward or emotionless or unsettling. You, manage to be up front, in camera, telling informative, well researched stories that are actually interesting in a form that is actually engaging, and that's an art I don't know anyone else has mastered to your extent. When I saw this video in my inbox 6 days ago, I didn't realize that it was one of yours, so I pushed it away. Today, almost a week later, I was happily surprised to learn it was one of yours, but throughout I was floored, this is even more engaging than the bulk of your catalogue preceding it. The only time I stopped the video (for a glass of water to better enjoy the show with), I was taken aback to learned I'd been watching you for 50 minutes. It felt I was only there for 20 minutes at most. This honestly feels like something I'd have to pay for were the source been any other creator, it's that good. One of the few people I can think to be on your level of documentary is Ahoy, and whilst he has his awesomely simplistic and stylized designs and animations, you reach this level by, for the most part, showing nothing on camera but your self. There's a charm to your stylings, like I'm watching something halfway between a university lecture and a craftsman showing off his workshop. This is a long, awkward, most likely poorly written, and probably needless rant, but I felt the need to write it. If you see this, Lloyd, thank you for your work. ~ Emily

The UN is seriously worried that the global supply of phosphate fertilizer is running out. There are very few sources of guano left, and today phosphorus is retrieved from limited sources of rock from a handful of locations across the world ( mineral phosphate). The phosphates in fertilizer are rapidly leached back into the sea from soils on which it is used. When guano supplies are exhausted there is real concern the global cereal crop will fail. Look up 'peak phosphorus' on Wikipedia. Australia's thirst for Guano to supplement it's extremely poor soils has lead to the environmental devastation of dozens of nearby Pacific Islands, including Christmas Island ( An Australia governed Island off the coast of Indonesia).

You really should do a video on John Harrison and the longtitude problem. Not just the longtitude problem, either, but he also did a lot of research into music, designing his own tuning system. His publication on that had a title which was characteristically lengthy for the time: "A description concerning such mechanism as will afford a nice, or true mensuration of time: together with some account of the attempts for the discovery of the longitude by the moon: as also an account of the discovery of the scale of musick". As you see, he snuck some more longitudinal research in there, presumably the calculation of longitude by lunar distance. Anyway, John Harrison, a fascinating character.

I absolutely love your style of storytelling. And the fact its all done in 1 take! I didnt notice any jump cuts at all. Lindy is everyone's idea of the perfect history teacher. Over an hour of talking about a man hardly anyone has heard of and still managing to keep our attention throughout. amazing stuff Mr Beige.

Gavin Riley Don’t go on the internet or outside, If color is your concern. You rather care about color than ”Was there mass murderer and torture?” Is there something worse than that? Yes, black / white specifik killings. Ok why
@gavinriley52325 жыл бұрын
@@haztetv7226 Ummmmmm no. Color is not the concern. I didn't want a racially charged video because I think racial divisions are idiotic. I wanted an informative video and was glad with what I found. I was simply giving reasons why people might have been hesitant to watch it. I hate racial discussions because nothing is ever gained from the idiocy surrounding race, and I didn't want this video to be that.
@haztetv72265 жыл бұрын
@@gavinriley5232 I also hate people discussing race, black people saying color or white people saying color or w/e, if you talk about race, say human race And history and informative videos, do though have to mention color since it was alot about it back then

Lloyd rambling on for an hour about some guy whos memoars he just read, and I’m easily so hooked that I didn’t even realise it was an hour long until the end. How I wish every teacher I’ve ever had in any subject had been like Lindybeige I would have learned so much more and been so looking forward to class every day, and I’m one of those strange people who liked going to school even without a Lloyd as a teacher!

I have ever-increasing health issues that cause me to lose my ability to focus and to remember things from mere moments ago, but you almost always hold me totally captivated. I also really enjoy your meandering side stories because they help flesh out the tale, overall, and because I tend to meander a whole lot, too. Thank you for sharing your passion with us!💜💚💜
