I think line6 was smart to not mention any amps they copied and instead went with more generic explanations. I think most of the time people get caught up in does it sound exactly like X or Y but, that is because so many companies try to say they are copying something directly. When you leave it more ambiguous you then can only compare types of amps and say does it sound similar rather than does this sound like a 1:1 replica?
@n8dawg852 жыл бұрын
Agree with this. Modellers are still caught in the world of pretending they are something else. I think they could move forward and just have great sounding amps with different characteristics for certain genres. Don’t have to pretend it’s a Marshall or a deluxe forever 😂

IMO, the AC15 sounds squishier sounding on the attack of the note, especially when driven, if that makes sense. Something that seems to be more unique to valve amps. Have you tried playing with the power amp settings on the Catalyst? Maybe playing around with the "sag" could bring it a bit closer to the feel of the AC15. The Catalyst does sound really good and looks like a serious competitor to the Katana. Good price as well. Superb playing btw, really helpful when doing comparisons.

Fantastic Demo. I thought A was the Tube and B and C are Catalyst. I would rate them A, C, B. Amazing how close these are but the tube still has a special character to the sound...a more fuller, rounder sound and it tended to blend notes a bit better. Was amazed how well the Catalyst took the tube screamer. The Catalyst could certainly be a pedal platform and in most live settings I doubt anyone could tell the difference.
@davidbarlow4312 жыл бұрын
As a stand alone amp, the catalyst seems pretty decent. However it is clearly designed to go toe to toe with the katana, and I just don't see it succeeding with its one effect at a time limitation. I have an AC15 and a katana 100, and while my AC15 is my favourite amp by far, my katana gets probably 70-80% of the usage. The convenience at home is unbeatable, I just lift it out of its corner. Switch on and go - no setting up effects and having leads snaking all over the living room floor. For anything I'm trying to learn or write, I have an arsenal of decent boss effects right at my fingertips, and rarely have to resort to the computer. I sometimes use it at rehearsals either again for convenience or just to make sure I know what I'm doing with it should I need to use it at a gig - which I'm 100% confident it could do without external effects. The catalyst could not do this for me so for me, and I suspect a lot of people, the katana will continue to win the day.

@captainfruitbatify2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I don't see a direct comparison between Catalyst and Katana. I'm a Line6 user (Helix Floor + Variaxes) so not being anti Line6 here, but if all they're doing is trying to take on the Katana's market then they've missed the mark; the single effect (+ reverb) at a time, compared to the Katana's 5, and only two footswitchable channels instead of four make it a completely different animal. Catalyst has a place for sure, and sounds pretty good, but it's not the all-in-one amp-and-effects unit that that Katana is.
@davidbarlow4312 жыл бұрын
@@captainfruitbatify I think the main interest here will come from existing line 6 users, then people who don't want an all in one solution but want a decent light weight amp. It would be really interesting to see how well catalyst works with other line6 products like pod and helix.

Night and day differences. I’m not saying the Catalyst sounds bad, it has a great tone. The thing is in a band situation with all the frequencies from other instruments your guitar amp needs to be able to cut through. The low mids and bass can end up muddying your sound, thus making you try and compensate by turning up louder. I have had valve amps, solid state and modelling amps, and have used all types in recording and live situations, but I haven’t found a non valve amp which can cut through the mix like valve amps can. The closest I have got is my Roland blues cube artist which is a fantastic sounding amp.

@DavesGuitarGear4 ай бұрын
@@joeltunnah alright calm down! First of all, depends what you are listening through. I’m using high quality headphones. Second, and I have definitely found this to be true, also evidence backing this, is that every individual has slightly different hearing (ear shape, ear canal shape, skull shape, ear drum size etc) Also how our brains interpret the electro signals. And some people are more naturally ‘gifted’ in this area. It’s like some people have incredible senses of smell, such as perfumers, Sommeliers, food design technicians etc. Others have attributes in other areas and this includes sound. Engineers, producers, audio specialists can be in this category. These abilities along with training can separate a persons ability hugely to a person who has an average ability in these areas. I do have a pretty good audio sensitivity and can balance, mix, setup live sound with very little formal training to a very good level. With trained engineers agreeing with only very slightly adjusting my mixes to their taste. So yes I can tell a big difference between these two amps!! If you can’t maybe try upgrading what you are listening through, or try some auditory training! Hope this answers your blunt retort! 😂
