In this video, I take a look at how incredible the PowerCab 122 and 212 can be when used in a hybrid guitar rig being used with a real amp and the PC+ amazing speaker modeling. For this particular example, I use the Revv G20 plugged directly into the PowerCab via it's Line Out. This is an amazing combination! This is the reason I bought the powercab plus, to use with valve amps. Running a JTM45 at breakup through the captor and powercab at TV volumes is pretty amazing. Beats any attenuator.

I was surprised how different the DI vs Mic'd were. In most cases I preferred the mic'd up cab. Seemed to carry a but more warmth to my ear...of course my hearing is awful after 24 years of flying in the Air Force. LOL

Cool video. I’ve been LOVING my powercab. I’ve found it really helps me dial in direct tones on my Helix even better than my JBL 4328p monitors! I run mine flat and tend to let the Helix do all the work. SUPER fun piece of gear and it has me playing the Helix in between work meetings from the house now! Ha!

Hi Jason, in my opinion I liked the miced version almost every time. That little bit of natural reverb/early reflections and darker tone from the ribbon mic makes all the difference. I know there are easy and obvious ways to change the tone from a D.I perspective. FRFR is how I use my powercab almost exclusively. I prefer the helix cabs to the powercabs speaker sims but great to have both options open to me. I watched guitar interactives review of the powercab where the reviewer changed from mic, to powercab D.I to helix D.I. Again on that video I liked the powercab D.I the least. Thanks for the content.

I recently bought a Pod Go and I set it up with the 4-Cable Method on my Traynor Amp. I'm thinking of buying a Powercab 112, but I'm wondering if I would be better off with the 112 Plus. The main difference is the onboard IR's and Presets on the Plus, which seem to be redundant when I'm using a Pod Go. One KZbinr mentioned that the onboard IR's sound "better" than the ones in the Pod Go, but I just can't imagine that Line 6 would have 2 sets of IR's - one just OK and the other one better. Seems to me that the extra $200 would only be worth spending if you had a non-Line 6 modeler that doesn't have the IR capability you need. Any thoughts?

So just to be clear when you say line out on the g20 you mean the xlr out not the speaker out correct?

I have been thinking of getting a Revv G20 and playing it in to my PC+. I was wondering if you could compare the tones using the PC+ speakers (like this video did) with the speaker sims built in to the Two notes software in the G20 using the PC+ in FRFR mode. I would love to hear which you prefer.

A disappointing thing about the Helix is that you can't help but think you can't get the most out of it unless you have a Line 6 powercab and a Variax-and those don't come cheap at all. Whereas with Kemper or Fractal you get a unit that is more or less standalone, Line 6 keeps reminding you all the time, through KZbin reviews and demos, that you'd be well-advised to use the complementing gear. That's not to say the Helix sounds bad when used alone, but I really wish they would market the Helix, the Variax, and powercabs as a single kit, making the whole thing less annoying. Just sayin'. Not at all: Kemper, Helix, Axe are all the same exept for the software. The Variax and powercab are not required and just had a little bit to the line 6 collection. If you want to play on a real cab all units need an aditional power section, all units also have IR. Kemper and Fractal don't get more standalone.

I think that Line6 like to give that impression in order to sell more gear, but you really don't need a Variax guitar or a Powercab to enjoy the Helix. I do have the Powercab Plus but most of the time I use it in FRFR mode which kind of negates having it as most good FRFR speakers would be fine, but I do like that it looks like an amp rather than a PA speaker. I think very few Helix owners have a Variax and if you have a Variax you don't need to use it with a Helix, but if you do obviously they integrate well.

I have a Helix floor and (too many) non-Variax guitars. I picked up a Variax to achieve exactly what you’re describing. 6 months later the Variax was sitting in my closet having been used a handful of times. I sold it and put that money towards a Powercab b/c I was missing the amp in the room feeling. If you own a Kemper or Axe-FX you’re in the same boat. I will say that I was super happy with the helix through my high end studio monitors, but LIVE playing with the powercab. I play live each week on in ears and noticed that the powercab is not only fun in my studio, but helped my live tones be dialed in better. I’m not using the powercab speaker models - just flat with the Helix doing it all because I want consistency. You can do great with your favorite guitar and a Helix. Want fun amp in the room sounds? Get a powercab. It works nicely and you can have fun with loading IRs on it saving DSP blocks on the Helix.
