Writing from Canada to say I had to stop this video as soon as you finished the sketch, and tell you how beautiful your work is. IT IS MEMORABLE. I can recall all your other sketches that I've seen--precisely because of your unique style. Yes, photos capture the actual details, but you in your whimsical way, capture the essence. And an artist should always do what they love to do. Thank-you for giving us all permission to sketch in a way that feells good.❤ Now, back to the rest of the video!

No worries, Toby. Whine babies are going to whine ... and in public. I don't think the Mona Lisa is anything great and can't fathom what all the fuss is over it, at all, but I'm sure she was happy with her portrait. Variety is the spice of life and everything doesn't have to be for or please everyone. Art is about personal expression, not straight lines or pleasing everyone. You make the art you like, positive, fun, and bright. It's your expression. Your instructions are easy to follow and to the point we get a confidence boost from being able to do it too. It's the ease of understanding of the object makeup and that anyone can draw circles, rectangles, and triangles and they don't have to be perfectly straight. It's fun! No stress, no weird OCD traits, just plain fun. Keep, doing what you're doing! The sketch looks great and locals would definitely be able to identify that structure. 😊

Hi Toby, as someone just starting to use watercolours, I was trying to be really tidy, stay within the lines and fill all the white space. I was becoming more and more miserable until I saw some of your videos. You've really inspired me to buck the trend and I'm absolutely loving my creations now. I wish I had seen these sooner. Thank you so very much.

Thanks for this great session. I can’t believe someone can be so nasty about your art. You and your art are such an inspiration. I’ve gone from doing no art for decades to feeling confident to show friends and family what I’ve been doing. Through watching and copying you I’ve learnt so much and enjoy it immensely . I love your style and it’s something I’ve always wanted to be able to do. I was so chuffed that my 18 year old son asked if I’d do sketches of photos when he goes interrailing in the summer so he’s got a record. All this is down to the inspiration, clear instruction and lovely ethos your you tubes put out there. Many thanks. Claire.

Line-n-wash, urban sketching, whatever we want to call it -- it's literally my personal art therapy. I do work at improving my perspective, proportions, and color mixes, but I know I'll never achieve "perfection," because I don't even know how to define that. When I sit down for 60 or 90 minutes to make a painting, all my worries fall away.

Thank you for this great video! It is very inspirational and uplifting. I appreciate it so much as someone who is trying to 'just see' before my brain interprets the image before me and turns it into something 'I know'. I just love how you describe how sketching and painting loose can create memories that are mindful. I am finding this to be the case in being new to sketch book journaling. With my first one now complete with what others may view as 'questionable art', I get such joy from looking back and remembering; with so much more clarity than if it where a photograph :)

Thank you so much for this. Your art is truly individual and has encouraged me to sketch loosely, not in exactly the same style (I will probably never master continuous line sketching 😀) but I've fallen in love with line and wash art and your videos have given me the impetus to find my own ink sketching style. I'm now planning to experiment with using Brushos to colour my ink sketches.

Thank you for this wonderful video! The idea of the thumbnail is mind blowing! Starting is always one of the hardest parts. Your paintings put me in mind of picture books - I bet you would do a mean version of Paddington Bear’s house! I would really love if you could do a little tutorial on different line strokes with a fountain pen, please.

Go to an art shop or Hobbycraft. Get a sketchbook, 120gsm or better cartridge paper, something with a bit of guts to it. Get some pencils B, 3B, and maybe 6B and an eraser or putty rubber and just get drawing. The book is your own and you needn't show it to anyone so no one can criticise. Learn from mistakes and try and try again before moving on to ink line and washes or watercolour in general. Show no fear!

It’s quite a good bit of entitlement to state that your work (or anyone’s really) is not “art.” Art is completely subjective and while he may not have jived with your unique ART style, he had no real right to state that it wasn’t art. Is he the art judge, jury & executioner? What gives anyone the right to make a very ignorant & absolute statement like that? I guess take it from where it comes. Lol. 🤷🏻♀️ on a more positive note, another fantastic art video! I agree, art or any hobby & passion should be fun & the process enjoyed, which for you it absolutely is! :o)

Hehe thanks! I agree, it's an odd perspective to take :) There is plenty of art I don't like, but that is about ME not the artist who created it.

I personally love the loose style you use. It really helps to convince me, that what I'm producing, isn't wrong, while I'm still not 💯 happy with my own work, it really does help to show me I dont need to be to precise with perspective, straight lines, and exact shapes. ❤❤ ps. I'm also sure if you did use precise straight line's, it would still turn out fantastic. ❤ thank you Toby
