Great explanation especially the Paxton. Had not heard the term but use the floating line. Thank you

Good explanation Paul. One might say "paint what's in your eye not in your mind". A question about floating lines; is there any kind of measuring going on when drawing these lines? Or are they just "felt" and placed by judging with the eyes alone? I understand perfectly what you're saying about floating lines but I find it difficult to get correct proportions if I don't take measurements.

Watch for a short video. Important to be clear about this.

Thanks for another great talk. Floating line(s): sounds like a close relative of “bringing it out of the fog” and being “all over the place” at the start. You place the strongest reading edges in their location relative to each other and because they are “floating” or not connected, they can easily be moved to more correct positions as the thing progresses. Is this a correct understanding of this concept? Also, that the same holds true at the very start in a painting using the strongest reading edges in the silhouette or arabesque?

In drawing the spatial orienting is primary. Top, bottom and getting around. But in painting you can be confused because there is that plus the visual order being set up..Know which you are working on is key
