Great video. My question is how do you adjust the clutch? Is it the with the solid end big jam nut? How much pressure does it need?

Enjoyed the video. Thanks for posting it. Was just looking into the design of linear actuators for inspiration on a different design. This worked great.

Replaced one (looks identical, probably same part# AN276545 for $750) a few weeks ago on a cotton stripper. Now have two of these in the barn that need rebuilt so that next time I don’t get robbed just to be able to get back to work.

Your video is very helpful to me as it the only one I've found showing the insides of the gear case. This week I was using a circa 2002 John Deere Gator 4 x 2 and the cargo box lifted up then suddenly came down. Upon inspection, three of the five machine screws that hold the actuator bottom case together had fallen out and were missing for some time. I've now learned that is a common problem. The two remaining backed out far enough to cause the case to come apart, thus causing the cargo box to come crashing down with a thud. At the time I was dumping crushed stone on a trail and didn't see any of the three gears/clutch on the ground. Frankly I didn't know that I should be looking for them. I may ask a friend with a metal detector to visit the area to find those three parts. At this writing my Gator actuator from John Deere is $1200 and aftermarket is $600. These actuators are not made by John Deere, but by the Thompson Division of Danaher Motion (formerly made by Warner Electric).

Well.... It's 5 years later and I'm still waiting for a Rebuild video so I can get my actuator working again.... Ok. So maybe I haven't been waiting 5 years for your video, but a rebuild video would be helpful for one of us who's rebuilding one for the first time that someone else took apart. Thankfully from your video I was able to see where the thick washer with the lines in it go. Guess I'll play the guessing game with the rest of the parts and toss a bunch of grease on all the gears lol Thanks for the video though it was helpful.

Do you remember how you removed the rear housing to access the gearing? Is it just the four smaller bolts and a single torx bolt to remove, or does the "big nut" also need removing?

Yep.

I had one of those stop working after a the utv collided with a tree going reverse with the bed in the up pos. Any idea what could have caused the actuator to fail?

There is no damage other than a bent tail gate I might add. The cylinder has no obvious signs of a failure
