I think this ritual is very common in Asia. I live in Indonesia, and we still bury our placentas in a container. I don’t think there’s any belief about it that I know of. It’s just tradition? and a “proper” way here to get rid of the placentas. Though, we don’t determine where to bury it based on the birth month, whether you’re rich or not. My placenta was buried in my grandmother’s house backyard lmao. (And also, does modern japanese people still bury their placentas? I’m curious what’s it is like nowadays)

Yes, in Indonesia too they regard the placenta as a sort if protector twin to the baby. In the bowl you place items depending on your wishes for the baby. Also wrap in white cloth. If you want your child to follow you always, bury it in the back garden, if you want your child to be someone finding his/her own way, bury it in front of the house. Keep a light or fire on top of the "burial place" for 2 weeks.
@smallandstressed2364
@smallandstressed2364 2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if places like Indonesia still does it because medical facilities are primarily around the bigger cities. Hospitals would go about disposing placentas in sanitary and sterile ways, but the average person might as well bury it in their backyard because what else are they supposed to do with it?
@SitiIchsan
@SitiIchsan 2 жыл бұрын
@@smallandstressed2364 The hospitals will let you choose: dispose of placenta at hospital or "take-away"😋. A few years back, we chose the last option, as we chose to do the traditional burial (in JKT). Even with my first child, who was born in Europe, you also had the option to choose: donate to the hospital (they usually sell to stem-cell laboratories, tissue banks and other medical related industries etc) or "take home". I really appreciate that in both cases the families are left the liberty to choose what they want to do with the placenta.

I'm Malay, we have these placenta rituals- minus the sake. Usually, to guard the placenta, we put nails, slices of fruits from the assam tree, and put turmeric powder to get rid of any smells. They also burned frankincense at the burial site. Items are optional, but it really have an effect on the baby's life... so choose wisely what you put in! Mine was buried with a book. I guess I know now why I have books on me the entire time. When kids my age are into toys, I'm into reading. At one point, people gave me many books to read; I also got books for contest I entered, and my hobbies revolved around books. I think it's not a coincidence, these things really did happen. Imagine if someone put a lot of money or gold with their child's placenta... That's why these rituals are so popular.

The Fujiwara clan would bury their placentas in blue silk that was placed within a bucket with red silk wrapped coins and paintings of bamboo, cranes, turtles, and pine trees. This bucket was then placed within another bucket, this time packed with colourful silks and other adornments like writing brushes, for intellect, ceremonial blades, for warrior spirit, or other things for similar benefits to the child. This second bucket was then placed within an urn that was painted with bamboo, turtles, cranes, and pine trees. In this urn was a piece of cloth from the head of the Fujiwara clan. This was believed to give a son political strength. If the child was a daughter, this was believed to help the Fujiwara clan marry the child into an imperial family, allowing them to retain control for over 200 years.

Exclude the sake (alcoholic beverage/liquior), the process relatively sama with Javanese Island culture of Indonesia. Placenta wrapped in white fabric after washing with pure water then mix with flower so the placenta will decompose naturally/to prevent eaten by animal. As a symbolic, ancient coin will put in, then book and pencil, small kris blade (if a boy), or hair pin and make up (if a girl). This ritual already depict in temple since 7th century or ancient manuscripts. Nice channel, how you make story telling, and your ilustration. Thank you very much for your history lessons.

fascinating and informative as always! in some parts of my home country, the old folks' superstitious practice was to wrap and bury only the umbilical cord with something that symbolize what trait or accomplishment you hope for the child. like if you'd like the baby to be intelligent someday, you burry the umbilical cord with a book. i dont know, tho, if there's any ritual or preferred place/spot to bury it. meanwhile my mom wrapped my bro's umbilical cord and hang it outside the door, i forgot the explanation tho.

The foot thing is really interesting. I was taught growing up that it's bad to walk on graves. That much makes sense to me. Who wants to be stepped on while trying to get eternal rest. But I see some sense in putting the placenta, an "in between thing" in the doorway. Especially as it's supposed to be a guardian of the child, it makes sense for the guardian to be at the door right?

Considering the taboos against insects and animals eating the baby's placenta, it makes perfect sense that human beings wouldn't consume it either. A mother eating her own placenta could be considered tantamount to her murdering her child's protector, which has all sorts of implications that could lead to complications for the kid. I have tried looking up "preserved Japanese placenta, Edo period," but I only found websites selling pills made from placenta. I am curious as to what they might have looked like after a few centuries, considering all the precautions taken to preserve them. My search history has gotten stranger and stranger lately.

this is very interesting OwO. I still had a piece of my umbilical cord in my baby album. I dont think there was a really a spiritual meaning behind it other than the hospital giving it to my parents as souvenir of my birth of some sort. My grandma told me how she crushed the umbilical cords of all nine children into a drink and all made them secretly drink the concoction though. She said it made sure that all her kids (my parent and their siblings) all get along. Also apparently in ancient rome, they had a sort of cheesecake which they call "placenta."
