As a linguistics program why is it that the only language you use is English? Many of the things you state are false for other languages and the grammar approach you are using cannot handle other languages. Linguistics aims to use analysis methods that are appropriate for any language (Van Valin, Dixon, Givon, etc.)--why aren't you doing that (it has me in a quandary)?

This E-Lecture is part of the Playlist "The Structure of English", whose the main goal is to describe the garmmar of PDE. Such a "class" or collection of E-Lectures is of high importance for teachers or those who want to become teachers of English. Theoretical concepts, for example those that are part of generative grammar, such as X'-Syntax, are of importance here. We do not want to discuss a cross-linguistic grammatical theory but the central properties of PDE.

That means you do, however, use other approaches in other classes at Marburg?

Christophe Clugston Certainly, but not in our teachers programs. In our BA and MA programs we have syntax classes with a focus on generative grammar in their modern versions (Minimalism, LFG, HPSG etc.), for teachers of English, however, these models are of little use.

I thought that these were courses for the MA program as the virtual elicitation video was obviously not for English teachers but for linguists. On a different note as one of my degrees I am a certified English teacher and we had courses in Chomskian grammar.

A further question for the actual linguistics department: you do not use Cognitive or Constructionist Grammars?
