As of recent Updates many editable options are greyed out unless you select the object in the outliner Right Click > ID Data > Make Library Override Editable. It's a bit more tedious but I guess it keeps Blender running fast by not allowing a bunch of functionality you may not need...

This is the better way but I haven't tested it enough to say it's rock solid, so far seems reliable just beware its pretty early days still. Otherwise refer back to the old proxy system.

please i have a problem with a work am doing, am now learning animation with blender. I mistakenly deleted my save files. i went to Autosave file and reloaded the file but unfortunately, the character is missing from the scene but the keyframes are still in the time line

I have a problem when I do all this, ( Blender 3.0 ) I can add keyframes on the rig, but cant delete them ?? Its driving me mad! Nothing seems to be locked either?

I linked my rigged character and everything is fine, but then when animate the linked rig, I figured out that can't move the keyframes, or copy paste them. Do you have any idea what could be?

Hi, library overrides would be a powerfull tool when it be ready for character rigs, right now is kind of problematic with advanced rigs because it wont work with driver, so if your character had some advanced features like facial shapes, it breaks the connections, so right now it is not ready for production rigs :( but I really hope in the near future that could be fixed :), because this would bring a lot of advantages for the pipeline

@@lucianomunoz hi again, just to update what I told you before, with the new release today of Blender 2.91 that problem was fixed, right now library overrides is fully functional with advanced character rigs that use shape keys or correctives shapes, that was really quick 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Hi Luciano, I can do library overrides for the rig and animate it but whenever I open the file again, all the animation and data is gone. Also I can't delete keyframes either. Haven't figured out what's going on. Thanks in advanced.

in the rig file you need to check the "is library overridable" option in the custom property that you created.

For anyone having trouble linking this rig in blender 3.3, just make sure to open the rig file and check the Able in Viewports option for the Rig collection on the outliner.

I really hope Blender has a more stable way of linking rigs soon. Are there talks of a deadline they have in mind for a stable rig linking feature or is it all up in the air?

@@lucianomunoz thanks! xD I had some issues where if I just reopened the scene file it wouldn't properly update certain changes I made in the rig file (such as creating shape keys with drivers) but if I then right click on the linked collection and "Refresh Override Hierarchy" it fixes it :)

this video was SOOO useful thanks a lot.. I have a question, I used the overrides workflow and it works, but my issue comes when i want to use THAT rig in another scene within the same blend file... if I choose "Linked Copy" the rig gets copied to the new scene, but every change i make in this scene, gets propagated to another scenes within the blend file... other than "Full copy" is there a way to have 1 rig with 2 or more different actions...and use them (actions) independently on each scene within the same blend file?

Hi Luciano! Thanks so much for your tutorials! A question I am facing after creating a LINK with OVERRIDES, I have several PROPERTIES FK/IK SWITCHES (for example) that are greyed out and I am not able to change them in the linked file. How can these PROPERTIES/DRIVERS be linked so they can be edited as well? Many thanks!

Hey kyle, first of all, thanks for reaching out, I’ve been following your career for ages! (Not in a creepy way) so its an honor to see you here. startruck drooling aside, what you have to do is go into the original rig file and prepare those properties for overrides by finding the original prop clicking edit and activating the “is overridable” check box, its a bit dumb but its how it works, ill probably make a video to clear it up more as every rig pre overrides needs to be updated for this. I dont know why, I have a problem in opening file with override object, everytime I open it Blender crashes😭 It's working fine with other files though

Can you make a video and/or comment how to save keyframes of linked rigs? I have my scene setup exactly how you did, made a pose with keyframes and saved it. When reopening all my keyframes are gone and the linked rig is in default pose. Help would really be appreciated! :)

@@lucianomunoz I found the reason: I had some leftover actions on my rigfile, deleting them solved the issue. However I am not able to use the poselibrary/asset browser to create poses from my linked rig to use them on other rigs. Maybe also this workflow could be very interesting to make a video of - as in big pipelines you notrmally have a rigfile, link this one into multiple scenes, wehere you need your character, and pose it. Not having the ability to save these poses is very sad for using blender in bigger pipelines. Saving actions though is possible. I´d really like to see your approach to this problem. Thanks!

My rig has an addon. And when I use Library Override, the addon won't work. How do I fix this?

You need to open in the host file (where the rig is linked to) and link the text file (the addon) and run it from there.

@@lucianomunoz I've tried it, but instead, I get an error saying that I can't edit this property from an override data block. And the thing is that what my addon is doing is modifying some custom properties. But with the custom properties unable to be edited, the addon becomes useless. There is a way to fix this by making everything local, that way the addon will work. But I don't want to do that. Is there a way to fix this issue?

Hi luciano, I wanted to ask that is there a disadvantages for using quaternion then euler rotation?

In some cases, because quaternions flips passed 180 degrees so you need to rotate in smaller increments... for instance in the case of a wheel you better use euler, but for a shoulder quaternions should be fine.

The other consideration is ease of use in the graph editor - Euler can be easier for humans to understand. There's also quite a bit of debate going on about the accuracy of Blender's quaternion interpolation (rest assured that lots of smart people are working on it).

@@astro_1859 Exactly. Quaternions store the orientation, Eulers are more like an operation to get to an orientation. So Quaternions get you there directly, Eulers rotate into place (which is why Euler order matters). For a character, some bones are better as Eulers, some should be Quaternions, and of course different Euler orders should be used in different situations. It's also probably worth mentioning that Maya (most widely used 3D animation software) doesn't give you the option to use quats, and people still manage just fine.

i feel proxies have been safer even as they're more limited its been used and worked with for years whether overrides is barely new and still in development

Great video Luciano! A question: i've been working on this project and we are still using the proxy way to link the characters. If we change to the library overrides, will we lose any information or maybe animation data on the proxy rig? Is it still a good choice to transition to library overrides?

Hey I wouldnt recommend just jumping into Library Overrides just yet as is actively been worked on, better wait a little bit unless there is a feature you really need from it, because i hear its buggy (but i haven't experienced that myself tho), so good luck!

I was wondering if we could use multires or subdivide modifier on the linked character...will this effect the skinning of the character?..basically i need a low poly rig to animate in the viewport and a high poly render out put.....if you could make a video on the workflow..that would be of great help..thanks again for this lovely tutorial!

Hey Luciano! So I have a character linked, however I went back in later and decided to add an additional object to the project file. In my case, it’s a flashlight that’s in the hand of my character. When I opened the scene he is linked into, I the new object is not overridden and when I do override it it just remains in the center of the scene without staying true to the rig and the animation. Now that I’ve made the update, if I were to reimport my character and Re override the whole collection, this would work, but that’s the whole point of the link in the first place was to be non destructive 🥺 am I doing something wrong in my workflow for adding a new object to my character file or is this just buggy? Thanks so much!

it should work as you expect it to, make sure you're not changing any names or removing important things from the original file that might be screwing with it :)

Are you able to use F-curve tab in graph editor ? when I use lib override it gets greyed out :( Thanks for the video, Lattice deform will be very helpful for polishing 👌✨

How can we have the possibility to have one animation for each scene ? If we can't do that I don't see much use of it :) so far when you pose on one scene it replicates the pose on other scenes

The point is that you link from the original, fine to several clean scenes, and then pose on each of those :)

How about an existing proxy? My relation options are greyed out and I can't seem to understand how to relink it to the other file.

I try creating a new scene and followed what you did, but after pressing make library override there is no armature popping up, i checked scene list and all is showing.

Question: Say you have a high res character model, how should I go about creating a low res duplicate to animate with and then transfer that to to the high res model ? The model I have now is well over a million polys which is making animation very slow. Thanks!

create a low poly mesh over your character that has roughly the same silhouette, and then chop it everywhere its supposed to bend, then parent those pieces to the corresponding bones and hide the high res one. It's not hard to do, its fairly simple it takes a bit of time but the speed gains are worth it mostly if you're not working on just one shot with it

Append makes a copy of the data to your current file (its like importing), and link keeps the connection to the original file so if you change the original file it changes in your current one too

linked, it's just the new way of linking that allows you to create overrides on the file where its linked to.

hermano hace videos en chileno porfa, te puedo donar mensualmente algo de cach, no mucho. pero intenté hacer spam de tu canal en varios canales de youtube de blender y parece que no a surtido efecto... ademas poní el titulo en español y me rompí el corazon haciendo todo el video en ingles, es como que te amo pero te odio jajajjaj

wena hermano, lo siento no me da el tiempo pa hacer en ingles y en español por ahora, cuando sea rico me dedicare full time a youtube y hare en ingles, español y chino mandarin, pero por ahora estoy jodido.. Lo del titulo se tiene que haber autotraducido porque yo no traduzco los titulos pa na :/ lo que estoy tratando de hacer en los ultimos videos es ponerle una buena transcripcion en ingles para que puedas usar la autotraduccion y que funcione bien, prueba y cuentame como te va. un abrazo y lo siento mucho .
