The Quaternion bug (15:04) The simplest way to fix this while in pose mode, go to the pose tab and select flip quats. (Default shortcut: Alt + F) Hope that helps

This is awesome, had hair pulling sessions when I would rotate the wrist on the Z Axis a margin or so to fix an error but when playing the animation back, it would suddenly do a 360 on a completely different direction! Thanks for making it easier to understand!

WOW! This is a fantastic detailed explanation of rotation tools, and it explains why, in some cases, two rotation axis were doing the same thing in work I was doing. It was because of gimbal lock! You can fix quaternion rotation problem shown at the end with flip squats. Can be found in the pose menu when in pose mode. Good video. I like the trick of locking the middle axis for euler and the logic behind. Thank you again for the quality of your videos

Great video thank you. Very excited for this series. I need to wrap my brain around quaternions and eulers. That way I know how to fight against that damn gimbal lock.. Was trying to do a body mechanic study that turned into a holy hell, so THATS gimbal lock study haha

I was following ur alive! Cours and was at the part 2 of chapter 8 when I decided to try to change my rotation axis for the arms from yzx euler to others to play around with what the other axis would do. But for some reason it has deformed my arms throughout the entire time line and now I have to redo every thing. I find blender such a hard product to like even though I know its capable of amazing things.

12:35 The W value is the cosine, and the X, Y and Z make up the sine, of half the rotation angle.

That half the rotation angle means a quaternion can representation rotations up to 720°. In particular, you can get smooth interpolation without jumping across the 360° point.

Hey people, I have a doubt: At 10:20 Pierrick Picaut says that the first the sequence is the primary axis and the third is the secondary, but I just watched video on the same topic by Wayne Dixon from CG Cookie, and there he says the opposite, that the last in the sequence is the primary axis and the first is the secondary. Maybe a little late but just to clarify!!! The last one is THE MASTER. it's like if you had a parent chain Example XYZ. Z parent of Y, Y parent of X so... Z master X child

after watching the video i still have no clue what im doing wrong. tried making a simple rotation along y axis and basically replicate 5:54 and everytime i try to rotate along x axis then play animation, it snaps back to previous x value and continues animation. trying to make angled fans more or less and am annoyed at the weeks i have been unable to get past. tried not animating at all since they need to be angled and final product seems absolutely horrible. anyone have any tips you cant get within a week of google search's, form browsing, etc? is the first time i am trying to animate something like this and don't even want to think of moving on to characters until after i figure out this "simple" issue.

But how do you explain that, in quaternions, if you put an X and Y value, and not W, the object is rotated too. So it could not be explained as the W is the weight between orientations. In a way yes, but it seems not enough for me. I just begin to struggle with quaternions rotations, one I seem to understand something, another blowminding stuff just appears next.

Is that Euler swizzling and how it’s read, written in the documents anywhere, how did you find out that it reads it backward to how its written, man it’s just so dumb, like they expect everyone to know all this, you should write the Blender documents for them with amount of knowledge you have
