Another tip: Select all keys in the dopesheet/action editor, press X and select "clean channels". It will remove all redundant keys and channels. Depending on how complex your animation is, this can greatly improve playback speed. Good for the splining and polishing pass.
@lucianomunoz
@lucianomunoz 3 жыл бұрын
You are right i think only to 2.91 because they improved the speed of the drawing of the curves so even having the graph editor visible or not doesn't make a huge difference anymore.
@mrfreen
@mrfreen 3 жыл бұрын
@@lucianomunoz Might be worth a test. This was a feature we got added during the making of Cosmos Laundromat, and it was more to do with the animation system than the drawing of curves. Basically if you've keyed everything on a complex rig during blocking, you can end up with a bunch of keys that are useless, but Blender still has to evaluate them. On the Cosmos rigs I could get double the frame rate or more, just by cleaning the redundant keys.

Also find that you can increase the speed, going in the timeline editor, look in the Playback rollup menu and in Sync, change from Play Every Frame to Frame Dropping. Hope it helps!

Hi Luciano There are a few more ways to optimize. If characters are likened to a scene, you can do this to make a copy (so as not to desatroy the original file) of the original file with the character you want to focus on. In the copied character file, link the actions from the scene we are working on. In this way, it was possible for me to get a full 30 frames of animation, because there is nothing else on the scene and in the file itself except the character. This action linking system allows you to preview the animation in a few moments, because you just need to save the file with the main scene with animations, and reload the copy of the file with only the character and the disappeared action. To do this just select the Open Recent option and select the exact same file (a copy of the file with the same character and the linked action). If this method doesn't help, then just render from viewport. There is also a hardware solution, last time I did a very large hardware upgrade to Ryzen 7 2700x, 32 GB RAM, RTX 2006 (about 2000 CUDA). I was expecting a better performance boost in the main animation scene, I was able to get around 22-24 FPS. I started looking for reasons, and it discovered I had the ram bones in the wrong slots, so it is worth checking how the ram bones are placed, if we have, for example, 2 ram bones, check that they are inserted into slots 1 and 2 according to the motherboard's instructions, because often slots have a 1-3-2-4 caonfiguration. Another issue is the timing setting, because by default, the bios in the discs sets the memory speed to about 2300 MHz, and even if we have more efficient memory speed, they will not work at their original speed. That's why it's worth changing the XMP factor (as long as the motherboard supports such functions) and it turns out that it helps a lot. The card I bought, I had to give back under warranty, so I put the previous GTX 960, despite 2 GB less frame, and half the number of CUDA cores, I got over 28 FPS in the same scene, so the correct setting of the RAM can also have a huge impact on optimalization viewport preview best regards Michael

There's a trick I use to wacth playblast at 24 fps without rendering. I create an empty scene for video sequencer and create scene strip with first scene that contain animation. I turn off av-sync to play every frame and it will cache, not the scene, but images from viewport. So it's kinda cached playback. If we could only have scene strip prefetch - this would be so awesome!

I use the decimation modifier to lower the polycount of a copy of the model and apply it when I can to make a super low res. Shape keys can be a problem though. You will need to find ways to transfer them. There's an addon that can do that but I don't remember the name. You can also do it manually and just cut big chunks of the model without losing the overall silhouette. Mostly on the body since the face complexity is one of the most important parts that needs to look good imo
@GabrielVez
@GabrielVez 3 жыл бұрын
you can also decimate directly in the mesh too by going into mesh/ cleanup/ decimate geometry when in edit mode. You don't have the problem from applying the modifier but you also don't have the other option the modifier has. Really depend what you need.

I understand why Blender is focused more in the modeling side of things but not having GPU/CPU performance mode with caching is really odd. Even today's low-end GPUs should be able to handle this but this also requires drivers to offset all that load to shader's in which technically, AMDs GCN/RDNA technology shouldn't have no issues with performance.
@lucianomunoz
@lucianomunoz 3 жыл бұрын
its not odd, its just not there yet, there are so many things to improve in animation in blender, and anything related to playback, I kinda gave up pushing the playback performance because i see no progress and i can provide no solutions sadly.
@michaelray5622
@michaelray5622 3 жыл бұрын
@@lucianomunoz , it’s odd considering the tools sets are made available. They keep adding features but yet do not address issues related to performance. I can’t speak for NVIDIA but AMD is pretty supportive of programs like Blender it’s just a matter of users contacting AMD and taking it serious. Users typically favor the dated methods of NVIDIA but that company cares only for profit so free applications like Blender are not their cup of tea. NVIDIA is technically bad on paper compared to AMD but due to companies always favoring the primitive CUDA core (shader core) , AMD gets the bad end of the stick. Well, recently AMD has started showing they have better performance with advanced APIs so let’s see how long NVIDIA can keep blaming it on “drivers”. Kind of funny how the tables turned in favor of AMD when DirectX 12 Engines become the default and required. NVIDIA sipped that DX11 for almost 2 console generations. Shit got old

I have a very simple character I made rigged and was animating. There is a subsurf modifier but it was set to 1 or 2 on an incredibly low poly character, I mean made with primitives low poly. It was playing back fine at 24 frames until one afternoon suddenly it was stuck at 5-10 frames. I go back to the previous file versions, they all play at 5 frames now. Even going back to before there was any animation and adding some, it plays at 5 frames. When I use blender on a different computer the playback is 24 frames. When I open a different blender file I have with another similarily low poly character, I add a sub surf mod to it and play it's walk cycle and it plays at 24 frames. It's like every single blend file related to my game character is cursed to playback painstakingly slowly but it was working fine before.

ExludeFromViewLaye and HideInViewport have no effect on the preformance, disabling individual objects by DisableInViewport still does nothing, even if I can't see anything in the viewport, I still have 5 fps. I have to click on the DisableInViewport of root collection with Shift key, then it returns 60 fps. To work I have to create a lowpoly version and put it in a completely separate collection along with armature. Is it normal?

Check to see if any of your meshes have Auto Smooth turned on In the Object Data Properties, if so Turn it off/Uncheck it for all meshes in the scene hopefully it should help.

@@TheThehwashere wow, and I'm using Daz, so there is most definitely a smoothing modifier trying to calculate-recalculate. Thanks for the tip. I'll try it out later.

Yeah as far as I know animation is not multi-threaded yet so you can have 64 cores and it wouldn't make a difference. Sorry !

Check to see if any meshes have auto smooth turned on. Located in the object data properties tab, then Normals make sure to uncheck auto smooth for all meshes that have it on. It can increase playback too.

When I simplify, it appears low-poly in the character viewport. How can I fix this?
@lucianomunoz
@lucianomunoz 3 ай бұрын
well simplify kills the subdivisions so thats why it looks more low poly and thats why you gain performance.

@@lucianomunoz Hey what happened was that the wrong model had the TV screen thing on. I used a proxy model to bake the animation on, and my 247k poly model as export to the Unity Engine. I was really frustrated. As a newbie a lot of things don't make sense in blender. But your method proved effective.
