Think about it, Link was there in the Fifty as one of the originators of rock. In this clip it’s the mid-80’s, and he’s still looking and sounding very contemporary, fitting in with punk, new wave, alternative. The other guys from the Fifties had even gone away or were distinctly nostalgia acts by then. Link never got old.

@@timmotel5804 This tour of Link's includes a performance in San Francisco that I was EXTREMELY fortunate to catch him in, the ONLY time. It was his Robert Gordon collaboration. Though in a nightclub setting, EXTREMELY LOUD, proportionally equal to Da Zepps or Da Sabbs--or maybe the levels at what Jimi played at--so SORRY that I never saw HIM. Yep, that Schott Perfecto leather jacket loosely worn over a bare chest, TIGHT leather trousers tucked into knee-high jackboots. As I recall the "Rumble" was stretched out to about 7 minutes! I'm glad that your transistor survived, to "Rumble" again, for another day!!

At 77 years old I was lucky to have heard this song in 1958 and could not get it out of my head. I used to picture vampires coming in my bedroom while this was playing late at night on my radio under my pillow. Wkbw came in clear and so did wprt so it was easy to hear this at all hours. May God have link do concerts in Heaven if I get there.

If you were 77 in 1958, I have some bad news: the vampires got you! But who am I to judge. It might not be bad news to you! But yeah, they got you alright.

Well Lisa my humble apologies for the terrible way I worded my terrible comment. I was 11 years old when I first heard the song. Guess my injuries in 1967 while in the military. Five months being told that you won't live has an affect on the mind. Sorry to set you off sideways.
@LisaJohnson196711 ай бұрын
@user-tp7ny5xi3f Hey, I didn't mean anything by it, I was trying to be funny! As in, if you were 77 in 1958 and you are posting on this, that would mean you are currently well over 100 years old, and vampires are about the only way to achieve that! Meaning, "They (the vampires) got (bit/turned) you!" & that's why you're over 100 yrs old & posting on KZbin about the experience that started it! Sounds like something my mind would conjure up as well. Nothing terrible about it; I apologize if I gave offense.

Sorry to sound so crass, I must say after listening to Link years ago and seeing him on stage left me kind of nostalgic and showed me my age and all I have seen and done since I heard the song in 1958. Saw Link at the Double Door in Charlotte, NC in the late 90s and had the opportunity to meet him after the show. I walked up to him, whipped out my wallet and attempted to hand him the largest bill I had - only a $10. He looked puzzled and asked "What's this for?" I said "Pete Townsend said anyone who ever played a loud, distorted guitar owes you money and this is all I got!" He laughed genuinely and told me to keep my money. We had a nice conversation. He was in his 70s at that point and he rocked the house.

When I first heard this song, there were no distortion pedals, no digital delay, no monitors, just reverb on the amp and whammy bars on the guitars, try to imagine the impact of these heretofore unheard of sounds on the youth of the day. We would wait until the tune turned up on AM radio, which it did once an hour, and our heads would explode. Link Wray altered the musical landscape.
