There should be a built-in way of doing this; this procedure is insane. It's way easier to process a track, and then drag and drop the FX into the other one and tweak it from there.

I recently stepped into Reaper after using Ableton for 15yrs. It impressed me and after watching your videos and I am definitely hooked on Reaper now. This video actually saved me from stepping back to Ableton because it helped me figure out how I could control Send FX levels in a Live situation where the Send FX level is mapped to a Midi Controller. So I thank you immensely for doing all these fantastic videos. You are an absolute legend 👍😎

does anyone know why reaper does not allow linking FX parameters across tracks? Seems like an easy thing to implement... And although this tutorial is great, and I will probably use this technique, I also agree with others here, that it is unnecessarily complicated (edit: I mean the setup is unnecessarily complicated, your explanation of it was nice and easy ;) )

It is very strange. It's the one thing that REAPER doesn't do that almost every other DAW does. And now, in 5.974, the linking is totally broken for me. I was using this a lot with Pro-Q³ to do what Ozone and Neutron do-create an inverse EQ link where the frequencies were masking. I'd make a buss for my kick tracks, another for my bass tracks, then route them to a buss, set it up like he shows here, link the frequency and gain of a band, turn the offset and scale to -100%, then set it up so it dynamically compressed the bass where the frequencies were colliding when the kick hit. This was a simple thing to do in other DAWs. You could just send the kick tracks to the Pro-Q³ on the bass track, and viola! But now REAPER won't even let you make a simple link between two parameters in the same plugin on the same track! I love REAPER, but this is just crazy.
@xaosnox5 жыл бұрын
Oh, I forgot to mention, it is possible. You just have to create a send from both tracks and apply the FX on the receive. The Kink of all REAPERs, Kenny Gioia, shows you how to do it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHnTnYWnbM99eck

It's mind-boggling that it hasn't been implemented 3 years later. On Pro-Tools, liking FX parameters is just a checkbox away on the group tracks dialog.

Hey Kenny, cool trick. One tip to make it easier; you can still use a folder track, just set the second child track's Parent Channels to '3-4' (in the Routing window). Nice video as always! Hopefully JF adds cross-channel plugin linking one day!

Super useful for something like drum machines that may have multiple outputs with a similar sound. Like 3 snare outputs that are almost the same, that you may treat with different FX, but you don't want tracks all over the place. I was accomplishing this through folders, but this is slightly cleaner. Love it. I do think Reaper has some improvements in GUI to make this a little more apparent.

you can do the same with folders (not necessary creating a bus). simply rout 1 in to 1 out on the 1st compressor & rout 2 in to 2 out on the 2nd. the pan of booth tracks which going to folder track should be hard left & hard right

@JanSandahl2 жыл бұрын
It should, in most cases. Some plugins are particular about how they let the DAW access their parameters. For example, the parameter you want to automate might not show up as "last touched parameter" in Reaper. Then you have to look for the parameter manually in the list, and in worst case the parameter name isn't even available. but, in most well behaved plugins, it should work.

@zakharyaroslav60113 жыл бұрын
you should consider that plugin which you use to create link is now a follower and the other is leader. so if you set linking in instance 1 - you can dial knobs in instance 2 and this will affect parameters of instance 1, but not the other way. maybe this will help

This is complicated as hell! Why not to use a stereo Compressor? And (pardon, it's not a reclaim) why sending tracks in FL Studio looks much easier? I click to the arrow and see that it's in the send now. And right there a send level can be chosen. So I can split one track to two (or more) or join two (or multiple) to one. There is a kind of Node editor even... i don't use it :)

I don't quite understand why people say it's incredibly impractical...? Ok yes, Reaper could let you use 24 instances of the same EQ all linked together, but most professionals prefer to us busses and/or folders, in order to NOT have multiple instances of the same exact plugin, doing the exact same thing. In terms of work organization, efficiency, RAM and CPU usage, etc... Using busses and folders is a lot better than linking a shitload of the same plugins together.
@xaosnox5 жыл бұрын
All linking of FX parameters, no matter how simple-even two parameters of the same instance of a plugin on a track-does nothing in v5.974. Damn me for throwing away those old installers. REAPER was the one app I never used to worry about updating. I guess it's time to visit the Time Machine and see when this got broken.
