I have seen many teachers on youtube but not such a teacher have I seen. I admired your lesson on cause and effect relationship and I do admire this lesson on contrast and concession. Being a teacher, myself, I like the way you link subordinating conjunctions, coordinating conjunctions, prepositions and conjunctive adverbs with their different functions. In short, I like you thrice; as a successful teacher, as a modest woman and as a sister in humanity.

Hi Minou, The lesson is really helpful and useful. I`m now feel confident of how to structure my sentences of " concession & contrast " properly. You`re indeed an experienced and top English teacher. Hats off to you. Would you kindly add to your lists the use of the two phrases " That being said & Having said that " for your next video lessons. Thanking you once again. All the best, Fazil

Hello Fazil, I'm glad you've enjoyed this lesson. The two expressions you have mentioned work in the same way as 'however' for concession. They prepare the listener for a contradiction to what the speaker has just said.

wow that is really great as you are great. some people made comments about comma in subordinating conjuction..part. well you explained very well the comma rule.and you dont even read comma word while reading that sentence B is rather expensive (,) while A is reasonably priced. and you read this comma word while reading this sentence While A is reasonably priced,B is rather expensive. and even you do not put comma in the exercise portion when you used WHILE in the middle of sentence. so it means it is typing mistake so it is not a big deal. i mentioned it here because i really shocked by these types of comments.

so professionally !thank you minoo, in spite of the fact that written English is so hard to understand mostly in an academic manner for its learners,but anglo- link- team seems that is breaking down the fact.you all are the biggest source of mine when it comes to standard English Grammer.lucky to have you...but.. still I'm struggling with my low volume of memorized words,have not you got tips on this except reading and memorizing the whole sentence which is consist of the mean word that you want to memorize it.and this has become such a nightmare for me while speaking, even though I have not experienced it yet in front of a bunch of ppl.
@AngloLinkEnglish7 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you've enjoyed this lesson, Nasher. If you want to use your vocabulary actively (while speaking), you must do two things: 1.Learn it in context, ideally your own context. However, it doesn't have to be a whole sentence. A short phrase will do as well. 2. Repeat the phrase out loud, ideally after a model, so you don't make pronunciation mistakes. So, as you read, write out the words that you want to learn, put them in a phrase or sentence that is meaningful and memorable for you, check and practise the pronunciation of the new word using an online dictionary, and finally repeat the phrases to yourself out loud. I hope this helps a little.
@nasherkohistani76187 жыл бұрын
thanks minoo, they will do, because I believe in your magic tips.as they have been doing a lot to me since I've got familiar with you, though I hadn't tried them before, but I'll try them. I appreciate your taking care of your fans and students from deep of my heart. God bless you!
@AngloLinkEnglish7 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, Nasher. One other thing: No matter how large your repertoire of active vocabulary becomes, the most important thing is to not to tense up or worry about mistakes before you speak. Stay confident, and relax about possible mistakes or hesitations. Everyone experiences blank moments, even native speakers. Let me know how you get on.
@nasherkohistani76187 жыл бұрын
great to hear again from you, the fact is that I HAVE not experienced it yet (talking to someone for a long time).I don't think that not being fully correct grammatically will be my problem ,though as I sais I HAVEN'T TRIED IT ALOT.but the problem I WORRY a lot about is not fully understanding the opposite side of the conversation .for example talking to a native speaker who uses a lot of idioms, phrases and slangs .and their style of talking has been kinky with it.
@AngloLinkEnglish7 жыл бұрын
Once again, there's no point in worrying about it. If that happens, just tell the speaker that you're not familiar with their accent and ask them to slow down. In the meantime, you may want to watch my lesson called 'Learn English Listening Skills' to become familiar with some patterns that native speakers use. Also, it's important to understand all the common phrasal verbs. You have probably watched my 10 lessons on phrasal verbs. Keep reviewing them. And of course, watching movies is very helpful in getting used to the way native speakers speak. I know it takes a lot to master a foreign language, and the best way to approach it is to make it fun and interesting. Let the worrying go.

Hi Minoo, For one more time, I was reviewing this useful lesson, and I found something and want to understand from you, please. When we use subordinating conjunctions we either start with the subordinating conjunction before the dependent clause and (,) then the independent clause or we start with the independent clause then the subordinating conjunction and the dependent clause. For example, He could not go to work because his leg was broken/ Because his leg was broken, he could not go to work. right? Here I found at 5:33 it was mentioned like this: B is rather expensive, while/whereas A is reasonably priced (As far I understand, here I expected NOT to use the comma. so may you kindly elaborate on this?) Thanks in advance, Sincerely, Ahmad,
@AngloLinkEnglish7 жыл бұрын
Hello Ahmad, Well spotted. Following the punctuation rule, that comma shouldn't be there. My apologies. That said, you will probably come across some sources that will put a comma before 'while' and 'whereas' in the middle of a sentence. I think this is because these two sometimes feel more like coordinating conjunctions, but they've been classed as 'subordinating' by grammarians.
@Abu-Aley7 жыл бұрын
Many thanks Minoo for clarification. You really can not imagine how much you enriched my English. Hi Minoo, It was long time ago since we contacted and I hope you are doing well. By the way, you didn't release any new lessons long time ago either. I hope everything is going well with you. Again, while I was reviewing your lessons again, because I really can't stop learning from your perfect lessons, I found something attracted my attention; I hope you help me to understand it as usual, please. at 09:25 it is said that "the employee" is a subject although he didn't promote himself. He was promoted by his/her manager. Hence, shouldn't he be considered as objective not subject if I'm not mistaken? Thanks a lot for help and I look forward to seeing new lessons from valuable lessons, please :) Kind regards, Ahmad,
@AngloLinkEnglish7 жыл бұрын
Hello Ahmad, I see where the confusion is coming from. The first clause is in the Passive voice, where the original 'object' (employee) is now in the 'subject' position of the Passive sentence. That's why I'm saying that the two clauses have different 'subjects'. I released a new video (Conditionals: Lesson 2: Answers to your questions) about three weeks ago. I hope you can watch it and enjoy it.

@AngloLinkEnglish7 жыл бұрын
You're most welcome. 'reasonably priced' means that the price reflects the value and is affordable. After a preposition, the verb always take the 'ing' form, even if there is a noun between them: without causing / for causing / in spite of causing >> in spite of the mistake causing

So many thanks for your reply. I want to use pronoun or noun before gerund in the following sentence, is it correct? "In spite of it/its/league team losing today, we will always support you, be proud of you, and remain your biggest fans forever." hello MIno, tks again for all ur amazing lectures, regarding while/wheres (subcordinating conj), we always put coma in the sentences? regardless the subcordinate clause comes after the main clause? as per ur example.
@AngloLinkEnglish7 жыл бұрын
That's a tricky one as different sources differ as to whether there should be a comma or not. To keep things simple, I would follow the same rule: If you start with these words, use a comma. If they come in the middle, don't. I know that in one of the examples, I have put a comma before them when they were in the middle. Ignore that.

dr teacher as u said in note 1 at 8:49 when the subjects of two clauses are DIFFERENT,you must leave the second subject before the GERUND . NOW in this sentence @The employee was promoted IN SPITE OF his mistakes causing so many problems. both employee and his mistakes are different subjects .so according to this statement we must leave the second subject HIS MISTAKES e.g # The employee was promoted IN SPITE OF causing so many mistakes. so i think and if i am correct in order to leave the second subject before the gerund,The subjects of two clauses will be same. and if i talk about @ The employee was promoted IN SPITE OF making so many mistakes. here the receiver of the action ( promotion and making mistake) is the same person that is THE EMPLOYEE. I am confused about the word "otherwise" . Which part of speech is it? Have you made any video on this word?
@AngloLinkEnglish2 жыл бұрын
Hello Veena, It's a conjunctive adverb: Be on time; otherwise, we'll leave without you.

@AngloLinkEnglish4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, Tili. Yes, you can, but that means that SHE ran the campaign, not THEY (her team).

Is contrast and concession the same??? I can't get it
@AngloLinkEnglish Жыл бұрын
Contrast refers to comparing two things that are not similar. There's no implicit contradictions in both being true. Concession refers to the existence of two things that can be considered contradictory.

@thomasjoseph51747 жыл бұрын
nice explanation madam. could u please explain can we use a comma before although if there is two directly contrasting information? eg. He is short, although his brother is tall. I saw this type of usage of comma with subordinating conjunctions. that's why.. please reply me
@AngloLinkEnglish7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Thomas. Yes, you will come across 'although' used after a comma to show a contrast, performing the same function as 'whereas' or 'while'. However, the most common use of 'although' is to express a concession.
