I’ve been keeping a handwritten journal for a long time, and I love the personal connection it provides. However, once the journal goes on the shelf, I rarely revisit it. That’s why I’m a big fan of the Day One app, especially the 'On This Day' feature that brings up entries from previous years on the same date. Sometimes I even snap photos of my handwritten journal entries just to see them at least once a year. But I’m concerned about having my data, which is so important to me, owned by a company rather than myself. That’s why I’m thinking Obsidian might be a great alternative. I already use it for book notes and ideas, but not as a journal. Is there a way to replicate the 'On This Day' feature from Day One in Obsidian? If so, it would be fantastic for maintaining a journal. Also, congratulations on the videos-they keep getting better, both in production quality and content!

Yes! You can do the "On This Day" thing - it's a little bit of an effort to set it up (I believe it requires the Dataview plugin and maybe Templater too), but I have seen it done - there are several examples you can find on KZbin. (Sorry to send you down a rabbit hole!) I was just talking about the issue of handwritten journal entries that never get revisited with a friend today. I personally have stopped writing my journal by hand, mostly because I felt that the growing pile of paper notebooks was oppressive. However, she still does. I suggested she continues the handwriting, but maybe marks the margin with a symbol of sorts (say, a triangle) when she writes something that she'd like to capture in her vault. Then, scan the journal pages once a week or daily, depending on one's favorite rhythm, to capture the insights into the vault. It's a bit more friction, but frankly I think more friction is better than less sometimes. I hope that's helpful!

I really enjoy both handwriting and typing-it all depends on how I'm feeling at the moment. However, I do find that with paper, I tend to interact less with the material after some time has passed. Having the option for an "On This Day" feature is fantastic, as it brings back great memories. Thanks again for the advice!

Having a quick poke at the community plugins, I'm finding one called Reflection. I had a quick poke at the source code and I don't see anything nasty, so you should be safe to try it. It relies on the Periodic Notes plugin, which is like the daily notes but with weekly and monthly notes.

I tend to Freeline in analog rather than digital, because I'm able to get into a flow type state and capture my thoughts better. I've made it part of my routine to then take those freeline thoughts and add them into Obsidian and revisit them to flesh them out and link them to other concepts and ideas.

The freetalking tip is awesome. First it didn't pick up me talking Swedish and assumed english but then it started to work after restarting it. EDIT: Pressing new line stops the audio recording for me and doesn't create a new bulletpoint. This obviously ruins the flow of it and the whole idea. Will experiment to see if I can get it working (using an android phone with Gboard and obsidian)

Good Video as always. But i have a question : So for context i use the Ideaverse vault, but how can i mix between the Effort Folder and my Tasks App (i use Timestripe so it's not about just tasks but also goals). How can i work smoothely with both ?

I can't do the number 1 which is the "Using my own words when i capture meaningful or interesting passages in a book" becauss what if im wrong? What if my interpretation are not correlated with the text, there is so many what if that i just memorize the passages.

My advice: you must dare to know. At some level, you need to take that leap of faith in order to actually "know" things. You must use your understanding to analyse and understand a text, which can develop your understanding. As Kant put it: "Nonage is the inability to use one’s own understanding without another’s guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one’s own mind without another’s guidance. Dare to know! I struggle with this sometimes too. But really I think that is note-taking rather than note making. Also it can border on plagiarism. Not intentional, but if you later use those notes and they're the exact words of the author then you are plagiarizing rather than writing an original work. There's nothing wrong with not getting down the original author's exact words. In fact the whole point of note making, and the whole point of thinking, is to think new thoughts and play off of other people's ideas to create your own. You can always go back to the original book and read it to see the author's exact words. But thinking is about originality.

I tried freelining in my daily note today. Just blasting little thought snippets about my day. It's great for my ADHD brain. I can bounce around, do random indents and generally go ham. I'll have to try freetalking later.

IPhone vs. Android issue. Android does not render / show the entry while talking, only after stopping the recording, same as the obsidian Plugins. Still, entering texts via voice is a great workflow to use

@@svenbeyer3486 I use SwiftKey for Android keyboard - it has dictation. Also a lot of other customizations that are nice to set. Been using it for about 12 years. Eventually Microsoft acquired them. Maybe there's a better alternative now but I've stuck with it through a lot of Samsung phones once the industry took away my physical keyboards which I miss dearly.

freetalking in a voice memo will cause the overwhelm I'm recommending you avoid, because processing the mess afterwards is so painful. Instead, talk in blocks, in an app like Obsidian that can transcribe in real-time.

Q It looks like you are using a keyboard shortcut to switch between “Edit” mode and “Read” mode. Please share that for us “Obsidian newbs”

Go to settings>hotkeys look for something to the effect of edit mode, read mode. There's a search bar there. I have mine set to ctrl+e to toggle between both modes. You can also use command pallet pins.
