Hi, I love your strength and independence. I've lived in mobile homes and vehicles for a long time and I want to share something that hopefully with make things a lot simpler for you by keeping you so much warmer. IF YOU PUT BOARDS ALL THE WAY AROUND YOUR VAN IT WILL RAISE THE TEMPERATURE INSIDE BY 10 DEGREES. It is really easy. Just lean them against the van and put a rock in front of them. By stopping that airflow under the van it is a game changer. I hope this helps you and Akela stay warm. It won't take you 15 minutes with wood scraps. ❤❤❤❤❤

Yes on the heating blanket. In your quest for health, regular and enough sleep is important. Waking up to stoke the fire is not good on your sleep pattern.You sleep better with a consistent heat, also. ❤❤❤❤
@joannahatton99Күн бұрын
I notice some of people's suggestions to help keep you warm may not be in line with your "keep it simple" way of living. BUT - maybe you need to balance the keep it simple with the keep it healthy beliefs you have. Sleep is such an important aspect to being healthy and interupting your sleep by waking to stoke the fire is not healthy.

I built a straw bale building, you'll love it so much! Straw bale buildings originated in the sandhills of Nebraska, due to lack of trees the pioneers baled the native grasses and stacked them using them first as a shelter for the animals; realizing the benefits and warmth these provided in the harsh winter months they quickly built a structure for themselves. Some were not stuccoed for 10 years because they planned to build a "real" home when they could afford the trees needed. Protect your lungs during the building process as the bales are dusty, personal experience offers this advice.

Looking forward to seeing the house build, our cold, dry climate is well suited to building with straw bales. I get the feeling of being forced to do something - the truth is, we have constraints placed upon us all through life. Some are physical constraints like it's fricken cold out, some are placed on us by human systems (you have to build a house to live here), and some are placed on us by love, be it for an animal or a family. What I've been discovering is that creativity is possible within those constraints, and so while on one hand it might be inconvenient, I can choose how I satisfy those constraints and have fun doing it. Like a straw bale house. You'll build it, but nothing says you have to use it. You'll build it, but you can make it an amazing if unconventional place to be. Anyways, thanks for uploading the video!

I wanted Colorado so badly when my house is sold here in Texas. Then I looked into the codes, restrictions, regulations, etc. Colorado makes it extremely difficult to do what you want with your land (until you have put a fortune into it). I am 90% sure I will end up in Northern Arizona. I will still need a building (depends where in Arizona) but where I am looking, for 15k I can put an insulated 12x28 side loft barn and an alternative septic (using a couple barrels) on a $10k property. Electric will be portable, water I will have to haul in or have it delivered, but I will not be there too often. I want to live nomadic but have a place to fall back on. I will enjoy Colorado by moving around on BLM and call AZ home.

Hello Linnea and Akela! I'm a long time watcher, first time commenting, from Australia. My partner and I are building a house currently, and your comment on "having a huge plastic field in the ground just to go to the toilet..." (among other things) really resonated with us. We have been through so much red tape, bureaucracy, and garbage just to stay, short or long term, on the property that we bought with our money. It is so frustrating and I feel for you, these regulations are ridiculous and all they do is separate us from what we are a part of, this living beautiful world.

For an emergency without fuel for heat or on the coldest nights, a well rated sleeping bag with sleeping pad that is rated also for insulation. You can stuff those two somewhere in your van for emergencies. That’s good you have the stove in that small building. I just seen a couple van lifers who have to deal with ultra cold. When it gets to a certain level even in a van, it might be dangerous.

FOR YOUR SOLAR POWER STATIONS I have a cord/wires for mine (actually works for all of them) that they are 25 ft 50 ft or 100 ft long they go from your panels mc4 connectors into a short adapter whether you have the xt60 or whatever and you need for your power station. This way you never have to take them outside unless you're shlepping them over to a project. Having mine plugged in to the solar panels I just leave it connected 24/7 and when the sun comes up and it starts charging it does it automatically I don't even have to think about it.

"Saying no without guilt or without stories" this one hit me square in the chest. We live in such a "more" driven world and I didn't fully appreciate how much do until I bought my property. There are days upon days when I have not left and therefore not seen another person and I remember that it's exactly what I wanted when I initially bought it. It took a solid 6 months for me to be comfortable with the slow pace, I may have now gotten to comfortable with it and realize I have to go to town because I am out of certain staples 😅 Straw bale is amazing, I built one of the first fully permitted houses in Colorado for my business partners parents and it's incredible. You will love it.

Also, you need to look at what kinds of bad weather you can get in your area like tornados, drought, floods etc so you can place your buildings and roads accordingly. If you have at least one pond but two would be better, this will help you to conserve water during droughts and at the same time capture the water during rain or floodings.

Wow Linnea, I’m so excited on the news of the strawbuild.!!! I can remember years ago watching somebody in New Mexico building a stawbuild home and I was fascinated by it. I think it’s the perfect idea for you and your setting and can’t wait to see what you’re going to do with all the natural materials that are used, ex: tree trunks used as structural beams, they made their own clay and covered it in clay, and did passive solar windows etc.. I can see it totally being your style!! I see you not having any issues doing it on your own .. with all the other work that you’ve done and you’re determination, willingness to get into it and learn as you go attitude, you will have no problem !! Although, some occasional help is always nice!This is great news and something to really look forward to!! thanks again for sharing everything, hugs and kisses to your sweet girl Akela.❤

Yes I feel you, we are part of nature, just like animals. And this planet (and countries, cities, should not belong to one person). It's one nature planet and we just get to live and enjoy it, just like nature and animals. If only all people could see it like that...

I lived in a strawbale house for a while. The heating and cooling were GREAT!! On days that were 95 outside it was 70 inside with no A/C. The only downside is they're REALLY hard to insure and can't be built in many areas. I totally agree with you about our ability (or inability) to live how we want on land that we have purchased. ABSOLUTE BS. ❤❤ You're amazing, so keep being you!!

I have a neice who built a straw bale house. Lotsa prep on the bales before building but so fulfilling. I've also begun to see thr use of hemp bales as more sustainable

I am grateful for your words of inspiration! Our world is uncertain, and we're failing to connect with nature and it's sad... Have a nice week on your beautiful land 🙏🏼
