True enough. But I’ve found it helps to buy just a little more than what you think you need. Plus it depends on your needs. For web dev? A laptop will do. For game dev? Probably a decent high-end CPU and GPU. For making your own Linux distro? Get a nice threadripper build like the one here, only consider a 3990x and maxing out the RAM for the motherboard. For machine learning? A decent CPU and the best GPU you can afford, maybe even more than one.

It really depends on how you configured the kernel. per default a lot of drivers are included, but if you compile that kernel only for your specific hardware and therefore deactive everything in the kernel which you don't use, you save a lot of time. And you save that time everytime you compile a new kernel version. I'm a Gentoo Linux user for more than 15 years and am compiling my kernel ever since. @@angelrivera8013 : Consider this. When I was a consultant for AMD, when they were at the top of the heap on performance, etc. they were already working on Open Sourcing a goodly portion of their programming details so they could have an edge in a space that NVidia has issues with (And the cause of the bird flip...which is still pretty much justifiable today...sadly...). In their early days, they had all the details downloadble for the NV1 GPU. Had I been able to lay hands on one of them, I'd have made one of the better supported cards possible for Utah-GLX (Go look it up...first driver framework for OpenGL on Linux...)...but couldn't. Then they closed up tighter than a drum and AMD opened up further as time progressed. This has little to do with this. To be sure, if the silicon development costs weren't still high, the community would be cranking out their own GPU. As it stands, one of the fastest "soft" cores for an FPGA and one of the fastest in-order superscalar CPUs is all Open Source. VexRiscv. Simply put...your notion's wrong.

15:50 For my development needs it's pretty simple: for compiles you need a CPU with lots of multithreaded performance, over a long time. That's why I've been using a Thinkpad T420 upgraded with a quad core rather than any of the more "modern" 15W U-series CPUs Intel has put out. Their thermal design is generally garbage, and they get power throttled within a few minutes of full load - making my almost 10 year old 45W quad core significantly more powerful after ~10 minutes. Ryzen 4000 mobile might change that, so I'm pretty excited for those devices to come out.

Went from a crappy 4770 (4C/8T, 3.4GHz), my stuff compiles a bit over twice as fast, which is nice, and it probably paid itself off within a month or two based on the time difference, should have convinced work to upgrade earlier. Wanted work to get a 3900X instead, but couldn't source enough of them in one go and they didn't want to end up with two different hardware configurations to support. Still strange for Linus not to have gone 2x1TB SSD in Raid 1 considering how much he's spending, personally I keep a VM copy of my environment as a back-up so I can be up and running in the time it takes to copy and expand.

One of my favorite LTT videos in a while! Great content! I would love to see more content exploring Linux machines and workstation builds in general. And more Anthony on screen too!

Love to see more dev focused builds. Could include some software. Maybe even set up a small server on a pi? or a small pc.

A point to: "a lot of developers can't be bothered build their own pc": I met a few who don't even know how. Mostly, the graduated from other topics like mathematics or engineering and not computer sience, and now little how a computer actually works. I had a coworker, that was terrified opening her laptop to install an SSD, and instead went for the corporate it support, while I just said "where can I get a screw driver in here".

Ha. Back in the day when I had to compile kernels for our Linux servers, it took over 20 minutes. And that was a very small kernel with just the needed drivers included. 🤣

Yes, I to had to settle on my power supply as well. I wanted a 1000 watt platinum but had to settle for a 1200 watt platinum on a Black Friday sale.
