I scan my 120 film by taking pictures of the negatives with a 35mm point and shoot, develop those images in a prison toilet, then use the cracked camera of a circa 2011 iPhone 4S and the light from my Honda Civic as a backlight to convert the negatives. It's a long process but it works for me.

Better even than a remote is ‘tethered’ shooting - camera is linked directly to the computer and the shutter release is on the computer. Not only can you view the intended capture on the computer whilst working but you can also do a quick ‘conversion’ too. I will be using Capture One as the software and a plugin called Analogue Tool Box (free !) You could use other tethering software (e.g. Lightroom Classic) and convert within that software but. dedicated conversion software apparently works better.

Some hints. Use a remote release to avoid jostling the camera during the exposure. Still helps, even with stabilization in the body. Next, fill the frame on the DSLR with the actual image. You don't need a picture of the sprocket holes. Finally, PLEASE handle your negatives more carefully to avoid dust and scratches.

A well done review of DSLR "scanning." I've been scanning 35mm to 6x6/6x7/6x9 with a Nikon Super Coolscan 8000 ED for the last 20 years for my important images, and more recently, an Epson V600 for less important stuff. Quality-wise, no complaints with my workflow - but the time it takes is a whole other matter. So I started using my D850 and AF-Micro Nikkor 60mm to do DSLR copies and am quite impressed. For simplicity, I like the Nikon ES-2 film digitizer. The big plus with this setup is, since the hardware is directly attached to the camera, shutter or even hand movement doesn't affect sharpness. I've also been using the Digitaliza and Essential Film Holder hardware and like them both. Negative Supply's product looks incredible, although the cost seems to put it out of the range of most film shooters. Regarding your results; I notice your lab scans seem to have more shadow detail and are slightly sharper than your DSLR scans. I also see purple chromatic aberration in the DSLR scans. The CA can be removed in seconds in post, and sharpness can be brought to par with the lab scans by using f/5.6 on your lens instead of f/8-11. Your raw files should also permit opening up more shadow detail. Otherwise, an excellent video for newcomers to digitizing film.

How does DSLR scanning compare to Coolscan?
@tomfreda7107
@tomfreda7107 2 ай бұрын
@@photodog13 The Coolscan scans are sharper, but I find the resolution and ability to process the raw files in DxO Pure Raw a huge advantage. As a result, I tend to leave the scanner for my 120 negs and transparencies (which gives me a 98MP file!), and do 35mm with the 47MP D850 and 60mm Micro-Nikkor.

I currently just develop and scan at a lab but I'm not particularly thrilled with the max resolution you can get out of a roll of 120 on a noritsu. Noritsu's allow you to do a high dpi scan of 35mm but no such high resolution option for 120. It seems a bit silly that you can get a 35mm noritsu scan with approximately the same dimensions as a 120 noritsu scan. DSLR scanning looks more and more attractive each time I learn more about it. Thanks for the video!

I scan my 35mm and 120 frames with a wood box, buildt just for that. I got one studio flash attached to the wood box to give me the right exposer and light to the film. I got my 105mm macro lens and canon 5d mark ii ready to shoot. I also use my manfrotto tripod and some iron plates to hold the film, they were made for 35mm, 120 and large format. Oh and i edit them with NegativeLabPro and some small changes with cameraw or photoshop. Dude, you're awesome. Keep it that way!

I know this video is fairly old, but if you're after this at a much lower cost, it's possible to make a copy stand out of an old enlarger, a tripod head and a screw to hold them together. For the negative carrier, I use the Lomography DigitalIZA Plus. It's basically the same thing as the Negative Supply holder but made out of plastic and at a fraction of the cost. It does 35mm up to 6x7 and comes with a built in spirit level.

For the last couple years I've been using an epson v600 flatbed. I have had such an on-off relationship with scanning my own film because of the troubles a flatbed gives, but I didn't know any better. I've tried ANR glass, taping straight to the flatbed, and have always struggled with sharpness and time, which has, like yourself, pushed me away from shooting 35mm. I'd love to step into camera scanning! Great video.

My brother and I have been shooting film for a year now, putting it in cold storage and making a YT playlist of scanning videos. Film scanners are non-existent on the market or marked up 2x in price when it's available. I rather save my negative and scan it myself rather than giving it to a local lab. From past experience, all I've got back is massive colour shifts, dust and minor scratches on fresh film. This giveaway would be a gift for me. I'll finally be able to see what I have been shooting for a year. Thanks Linus.

I have been thinking about having my own YT channel about film photography but more specifically for those who does not have so many budgets like me. But the thing is really about scanning. Living in Germany means the development of films are quite easy, but most of the lab does not provide high Res scanning. If they do, it's very pricey. Currently I have to bear the crappy scan from the lab I choose. I have heard of DSLR scanning for a time but your video helped me a lot. I’m in Japan where the film photography industry is still pretty big so they have labs all over and you can even go to the big electronic store to get your film scanned and they come out pretty good most of the time. The only problem is the cost, it can get quite expensive to get rolls scanned and developed most of the time being around $15-20 per roll and most of the time the scans come on a CD unless you pay extra to get them uploaded to the cloud for you to download
@dutchbachelor
@dutchbachelor 11 ай бұрын
Huh, they weren't even kidding then when I saw some vids that Japan in some regards is way behind the west. Not only paying for everything with cash or still using fax machines for a lot of things. I mean it's awesome that film is still very much alive there because of that. (Here in the Netherlands it can be a bit tricky to even get ANY normal 35 mm film in a store - online it's still okay-ish - and it seems the biggest department store that offered developing films and used to sell their own 35 mm film - a rebranded Fuji 200 - and was my go-to is about to stop offering that service, others will probably follow suit.) But you'd think that it's cheaper for them to upload the pictures instead of having to burn a CD for that.

I scan colour at Walkens house of film lab here in Melbourne and black and white I scan at home using a sigma dp2m through a loup. The sigma foveon sensor is amazing for black and white ,but through a loup only the centre gets in focus, the camera often falls off the loup and the sigma batteries die after like 10 shots, but I can still get to see the film grain and it's a beautiful thing. Having that setup would be a dream. I don't know why no camera company hasn't made a great 35mm film scanner yet, It would be a good selling product for sure. I just tried this with a phone as the light box. I think I need more practice because I think I picked up the pixels from the phone screen. But this is going to be my method. Thanks for the video!

Hi Linus, Andrew here in Ottawa Canada Currently using a Nikon cool scan for 35mm and slides, it’s slow but it works Currently setting up a DSLR system with canon camera and 100mm Macro with a copy stand. Challenge I face is most of my negatives are over 30 years old so are only in sheets of 4 or 5 photos. Trying to find ways to automate and speed up the process at the moment. Lots of scans to do. Thanks for the video Andrew

I scan using a DSLR. Currently I am using the Sunray box iii. The lightbox is great and super bright, but scanning 120 negatives can get frustrating. I tries out the Film Lab software-I love how easy it is to use vs Negative Lab pro, and I feel it gives better results.

Currently scanning with a Minolta Dimage Duel Scan iii for 35mm and an epson v600 for 120 film. Plan on moving to a dslr setup soon so I don't have to wait years for my scans.

I currently go to a Lab for my scans but I just tried DSLR scanning for the first time at my friend's house 2 weeks ago! It's definitely the way to go! He has the negative supply carriers and my god they are ESSENTIAL. Awesome video! Thanks!

literally just got in a fight about scanning film on an Epson v600 for my partner. because they didn't realize how frustrating it is, and how much time it takes! This seems soooo much more effectiant!

Not shooting enough film bc of how expensive labs have gotten here in Paris. Home scanning now became a top priority thanks bro 😊

I’ve been getting my negatives scanned in lab because flatbed scanning with a cheaper scanner never seemed like it would give me the consistency and sharpness that I desire and my budget prevented me from having access to a higher quality scanner. Discovering DSLR scanning (mirrorless in my case) was a game changer and actually motivated me to shoot more film and invest in a Pentax 67! 😁

I tried DSLR scanning way back before all these new software tools came out and it drove me nuts so I switched to flatbed. Amazing how fast things have changed, might have to try this out again. Thanks for the walkthrough.

I’m just about to start doing this for my film so it’s super useful, thanks. The only thing I would different is have the shutter on a delay to completely rule out any camera shake

I scan with an old Nikon bellow and slide duplicator. I use a Nikon macro adapted to my Sony. The lightning comes from a flash. A lot of cables and adapters but the result is good. For 120 film I have not yet worked out a system.

I normally use my Eason v750 to scan negatives and slides. The Eason scan software does a good job and I aLso have SilverFast AI for really detailed scanning that provides dust and scratch removal. Recently I tried scanning with my Nikon D810 and the Nikkor 105 macro lens. I purchased a film holder to hold the negatives flat on a light table. I use a tripod to hold the camera level and steady. I really need a copy stand to improve the process. When I scan with my D810 I use Negative Lab Pro in Lightroom for the conversion. I love the results and may soon try my Fuji XT4 and the manual focus Nikkor 55 macro to facilitate faster scanning, with no loss in quality.

I've had success scanning 35mm and 120 negatives at 1200 spi (samples per inch) using the EPSON 600 photo scanner. Then I bring the .tif image scans into Topaz Photo AI and I apply Denoise, followed by Face Recognition. No upscaling. The resulting files are very "clean" and look great when printed.

I've just started scanning my film with my Sony A7iii and Sigma 70mm Macro. I made a film carrier out of scotch tape and cardboard and for the light source I'm using an XRay viewer I found on the side of the road haha. Its a bit sketchy but it gets the job done :).

I have been using a DLSR to resurrect small 35 mm contact page images, then shooting a new picture off the screen as an enlarging method. But what I really want is to use the camera to digitize 1,000’s of family photographs. I like your video because we also have lots of 35 mm negatives to print or digitize and not waste a lot of money on the ones we would throw out.
