I had two PRIVs (due to theft and attempted theft) and I've gotta say, as someone who only uses Blackberries and only Blackberries in the smartphone era, it was the shittiest build quality of them all (and the rest are great). Damn things ended up squeaking like a hundred year old wooden floors when typing. The sharp edges had me thinking I could use them as ninja throwing stars. I still have a 'PRIV-mark' in some pairs of pants because it rubbed so sharply in the pocket that it wore a hole in one spot. The battery life was terrible. Barely a day when every other Blackberry I've had (RIM or TCL) lasts multiple days with ease.I had great hopes for the PRIV but they fucked that one up. It also got hot at times which never happens with any other. I wish they would do a modern Torch version. Loved those things.

I love this phone, though I am a mechanical keyboard junkie. I actually need this device to administrate servers on the go. Anyone who has ever logged into a Unix server using a mobile phone knows the woes of using a virtual keyboard. The period key is an easy fix, just make it where a double tap on the space bar puts in a period. The rest of the punctuation is easy to use, as the more you use something the better placement it is in the menu. It's a learning keyboard taking less than three days before you find your stride. You can hide the navigation buttons or move them completely using a simple app. Actually everything in this phone can be customized to your individual needs with ease. You just have to know how to do it, like spend some time reading, oh my gosh, the horror. In fact I am positive if I spent just 30 minutes with Linus I could have solved all of his issues. Everyone, I mean everyone who had this phone and didn't like it was because they really didn't know how to use it or didn't spend the time in making it into the ultimate tool. Which when you finially do, this phone is amazing, honest, no embellishment, just amazing. However and again, I'm an IT professional and I actually need a real keyboard. No, I dont want one, I need one. Virtual keyboards drive me insane when editing in VIM or navigating a Unix server 1000's of KM away. Heck, I even create scripts on my BB without issue. This phone isn't for everyone, it's a work phone, not for play and this is its biggest issue with most. If you need the ultimate communication device, this is it. If you watch tons of media and play games, look elsewhere. I do that stuff on a tablet with a connected game pad as a phone is just to small.
@nihil20096 жыл бұрын
Eh. I've used my phone to ssh into servers, and the bigger issue was being able to read the terminal rather than typing and this doesn't seem like it would solve that. Anyway, I got an xps 13 for on the go sysadmining and it's so light and easy to tote around - even the PSU is tiny. Love it.

I am a Linux sysadmin but I see no advantage in having a physical keyboard. I am so used to soft keyboards, that I had to actually think about "pressing down" on the key the last time I tried a BB or an older Nokia phone. It caused me finger fatigue. That said, you need to find a good android keyboard and a good terminal app. I use ConnectBot and AOSP keyboard on LineageOS.
@Jadinandrews6 жыл бұрын
You do get software keyboards on Android that are a lot more friendly to programmers and bash'ers. Of course, you could always just get a bluetooth keyboard, Samsung made one that folds up and has a touch pad built in. It's really nice, has much larger keys as well.

The primary use of a smartphone is not taking pictures and videos. For us blackberry users, what matters the most is quick access and input. I use my phone for calls, text, email, calendar, notes, passwords. My phone is a tool for me, it's not a time-wasting device with never ending distractions. The Classic has the best keyboard ever put on a smartphone. Probably as good as or even better than the one on the 8700. There are still users out there rocking the legendary 9900 almost ten years after its release, because it was and still is a superb communication device. Compact and light with all the essentials. Built to last. Differentiated form all the slabs of glass nowadays that are all so uninspiring, as if they were all designed by the same person. When you see an 8 year old carrying an iPhone, you know it's a toy/play device and not a real communication tool. It's a shame that BlackBerry decided to leave the smartphone market. OS10 was way ahead of its competitors, and to date, BlackBerry still has a huge user base. I'm still rocking the bold 9900 in rotation with the Classic and wouldn't give up these devices for nothing.

Hey Linus, Normally I find your reviews useful and insightful, however for this one I think you completely missed the point of this device, I believe you are not the target market for it in the least, as your review essentially says that your usage of a mobile phone is basically web browsing, taking photos and watching videos, probably some gaming as well, hardly the email-centric/ productivity minded business user. Allow me to explain how in the past 5 weeks of using the Key2 it has proven to be the phone that I needed for business uses. Some background context: I'm a 33 year old small business owner who specializes in large format printer and laser printer repair, I also supplement my income on weekends by cooking, what this leads to is what I have coined as "dead technician hands" while useful for unscrewing/tightening screws/bolts as well as taking food/pans out of a 350f+ oven barehanded it makes using an all touch device essentially impossible, standing over 6'2" I have large, leathery, calloused, " man hands" that have, historically, never worked right on an all touch phone, and it's not for my lack of trying them, iPhone 3G through 6+, Samsung Note's 2+3, Samsung Galaxy S5+S6+S7, LG G4, even ancient handsets like BlackBerry Z10, all had the same issue, the keyboards never register what I'm actually pressing, so a physical keyboard is a must have for a mobile device for me, I can't send a 1000+ word email on an all touch device without so many spelling and punctuation mistakes that it makes it appear as though I can't grasp basic English or care so little about spelling and punctuation that any C level executive I email would be unable to take me or my business seriously. Enter the Key2, a phone who's battery lasts from 630am to 100am reliably every day (yes, being self employed the hours can be very long), a phone that can easily accommodate the numerous emails I need to send every day to various customers with near zero spelling or grammatical errors, a phone that has an SD card slot so I can keep my 38Gb of service manuals on my phone for easy access. I am frequently sent confidential blueprints/proofs/documents as examples of print quality issues, knowing that security is still a major priority for BlackBerry's gives both me and my customers peace of mind. In the 5 weeks I've been using the Key2 I have spent the vast majority using it as it's intended, to communicate via phone, emails, text and social media, I have literally spent about 3 hours watching the odd show on Netflix, which as expected, wasn't as good of an experience as watching it on my TV or laptop. I don't play mobile games because, to be quite frank, they all pale in comparison to almost any PC/Xbox title. If you intend to play Fortnite or PUBG then of course this phone will not be the device for those specific situations, it was never intended to have users spend most of the day gaming/watching videos. The Key2 has always been intended as a business minded productivity device, comparing it to other "flagship devices" that are specifically designed around gaming and media consumption as their primary usages is like saying "this screwdriver makes a terrible hammer" or "these steel toed work boots make terrible scuba flippers", using a device not as it is intended and designed to be used will always provide a sub-par experience using said device. As for the fear of lacking updates, BlackBerry releases monthly security patches just like google, the carriers do not always push the updates, but that is not the fault of BlackBerry or TCL. The Priv (2015) launched with android 5, it was later upgraded to 6.0.1, the Keyone (2017) launched with 7.1 and has just been upgraded to 8.1, I see no reason why BlackBerry wouldn't provide at least 1 major OS upgrade like it has for its previous devices, unlike my Note 2 that started on 4.1 and never got upgraded past 4.4 and my galaxy S6 that is still on 7.0. Most devices seem to get updates for 2 years or so, regardless of manufacturer. Creating keyboard shortcuts combined with the "speed key" (the 9 dotted key beside sym) I can easily swap between any app without ever having to go "home" or scroll to find what app I want, I can jump from reading a PDF to my emails then to excel then to spotify then to Waze effortlessly with no "home" downtime. Also no one mentions that you can walk and type without looking at the device once you learn the keyboard, muscle memory is a real thing and it works beautifully with physical buttons, try accurately sending a long, well punctuated email without looking at your all touch devices on screen keyboard. This device is absolutely not for everyone, but as a business communication device it is the best phone I have ever used in that regard, sure my Note 2/S6 were better for watching Netflix or spending 10-15 minutes gaming, but that was about it, as communication devices they were sub par in almost all regards, call quality, message/text accuracy, ease of use, etc.

Allow me to TLDR for you then, if ~1000 (878 actual) words is to much to read this device is not designed with you in mind. If you use mobile phones as a communication tool and frequently type/read 1000+ word emails/blog posts/etc then it is likely a device designed and targeted at you

Speaking from a longer-term perspective: I've had the KeyONE as my phone for almost a year now. There are minor differences between this one and the Key2 but it seems they're mostly the same in the way they work. This has actually been my first BlackBerry phone so I don't have the before and after comparison from the old models to the new ones. I went from Nokias to iPhones (up until the iPhone 6S) and now to the Blackberry. Moving from the touch screen keyboard to the physical keyboard was nothing short of life-changing! I would estimate I make LESS than 10% of the typos that I used to make on a touch screen keyboard and I don't even make use of the more advanced features like the gestures or swipes. I agree that the camera leaves a lot to be desired after having come from the iPhones. Increasing exposure within the camera app sometimes helps a little but forget about any sort of movement in low light conditions. In comparison though: Battery life is incredible! As a small business owner I am on my phone all day, every day and rarely do I have to charge it before my usual nightly charge, even after a 12-15 hour working day. I don't even take a charger or cable with me anywhere. No chance of that on any of my previous iPhones. Not even close. Charge cables and portable batteries were my lifeblood! There are times that I do miss the way things work on an iPhone but that's more of an Android vs iOS can-of-worms that I'm not even going to attempt to delve in to here and now... I still haven't made up my mind as to whether I would stay with it or go back to an iPhone but on my current upgrade cycle I still have about another year to decide so that's future-me's problem to deal with :P

It's a serious phone for serious people. LOL. Phrase taken from Flossy Carter. I put video viewing secondary to customization and fast access to things I need to do. I type English only and prioritize accuracy over emojis and stickers. You can install your other VKBs and use the PKB at the same time (although no gesture features). So you're not missing anything. its all about comfort, and finding it hard to adapt to something new. I have been a BB user for 7 years, and i fell in love with the physical keyboard. I find it difficult to use full touch phones, just as u r finding it hard to learn the keyboard. the inaccuracy in typing and too much focus on the screen while typing on the screen keyboard, is just a discomfort for most BB users. I use the Keyone, and thats the best device i have bought in 2018. I hope they will never stop making devices with physical keyboards.

Coming from the Classic this seems like a Cadillac. I love a physical keyboard and right now this was my best option. I can do so much more with this phone than I could on my Classic . Hlynur Stefánsson Actually Blackberry should have kept the same form factor , improved the keyboard and battery life , provided better software updates , added SD835 and called it a day for $650. That would have been amazing. This form factor has no relevance in 2018.

...as a user of BlackBerry's since a 7850 (Bold's, Z10/30 and a Passport up until 2022 and now a Keyone) I will say that if you live your life on a phone with games FB etc. then I'm sure other devices (my work Z30 was retired in 2022 as well, and I have a S21 now for work) will do. However, if you like me and just want to get in and out of the phone and put it back away then the BlackBerry's allow that better than any other device that I've tried. The VKB on the S21 for example is absolutely horrible compared to the VKB on the Z30 it replaced (BB's VKB is still far and away better than anyone else's). I just find that just picking up my BlackBerry to do what's needed it's just more focused especially the communications aspect. Some else pointed out that yes you have more 'real estate' for viewing web pages, but you don't lose that much, especially if your a 'one-handed' user the thicker bottom edge keeps your hands off the screen and having a capacitive keyboard keeps your fingers off the viewing space entirely. Another note regarding that keyboard is that if you've been a longtime BlackBerry user like myself you have.....BlackBerry thumbs so-to-speak and the Key series KB, albeit not as awesome as what was on the Bold 9900...it's still very good and takes up less room than a current VKB pop-up takes from any Android or iPhone equivalent. At the end of the day, yes it is an acquired taste...but even when I went from a Bold 9900 to a Z10 it took more that a month to get used to it (I suppose perhaps the entirely new OS in BB10, which is still hands down my favourite still)...and when I went back to keys on the Passport and now Keyone also took time to get back to something I had been used to. A PKB can be a little more 'difficult', but the trade off is accuracy and speed...and to me anyway is much more valuable.

@@nathanpickering6742 Lack of features? Besides the Wireless Charging I don't see any other feature lacking out on this phone; I think you're looking some really particular features in this phone and it doesn't have those; if you're looking for privacy, security enhancements and a physical keyboard this is the phone for you, if you're looking a phone to watch Netflix, first you should be getting a 4K TV Screen but as this is too much to carry on daily basics you should buy a big screen factor phone like the XS MAX or S10. IMHO people consider that there preferences should be all other people preferences, everybody have their own. In my personal opinion, I don't fucking care about the camera on a phone and here I'm paying stupid $300-$500 extra for this "feature" on any current phone because nowadays people consider it an essential thing. Note: I have a Pixel 3 XL, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s, iPhone 8, OnePlus 5(all those came out around the same time as the BBK2), and the Blackberry Key 2 perform better or equal to those phones in many situations.

It is a matter of preference and perspective. Would love it if the Note series had a hardware keyboard? Doubtfully but I'd give it a shot. Sadly power users and business users have I believe grown past BB which once upon a time was for most the only enterprise ready cell phone available. I do contracting (Fire Damage repair I'm a retired FF ) and honestly it helps for my business for my workers to be able to have the before images from the property owners as well as my post fire pictures from my walk thru. So while I feel sad that the time of the BB has past, I'm not honestly going to shed a tear over it. But one device I will state flatly is nothing more than a "content consumer device" is the iPhone, while great for games, apps and general screening around aren't really enterprise devices at all they just play them on TV.
