I guess I get where Linus is going here... but basically his theme is: upgrade to the new platform immediately, or you'll be left behind. My issue with this is that there's a lot of software that isn't going to be ARM native for a while. Getting an x86 machine now means compatibility with *existing* software for a while. This is important for some folks. I bought a PowerMac G5 at the beginning of the Intel transition, and I was happy with it for 5 years. I think it'll be similar this time around as well.

Exactly this. I rely on Parallels to run windows apps that are critical for my business. My 2010 iMac had had its day. The Apple Silicon isn't going as smoothly as they claimed it would 2 years ago. Im sure the new M3 will be a vast improvement. Back in the old old old days of the 512k Mac / Mac Plus a genuine genius came up with a cardboard top hat that effectively quadrupled airflow, and thus cooling absolutely silently. @@robertp457 I think it's safe to say that all Apple enthusiasts have their head in the sand to some degree. You'd think that some of them would do a little research into the devices they worship. The build quality just gets worse and worse. The thermals are horrendous. Close your eyes and click on any Louis Rossmann video and in five minutes anyone would become unreasonably angry about how poorly soldered and engineered these things are. I can't think of any type of consumer who has a real need for a mac. Having a tablet + keyboard does almost all of the same stuff that people use their computers for daily. For anyone who wants a desktop in the mid-range, spending ten minutes clicking around on pcpartpicker will save them at least two grand. Professionals who need bigass beefcake computers can get an insane amount of mileage out of a simple threadripper build and probably save ten grand. They wouldn't have to worry about this legacy software nightmare either. It's not like switching from Intel to AMD makes Windows stop working in a traditional setup. Any studio sitting on $100k+ of Apple computers must have so much poop in their pants now. Half the programs their employees use every day will no longer receive updates until they replace the whole fleet. And after they buy those new ARM Macs... well, now half the third party software that their employees rely on are completely broken until they provide an update, if those developers are even working on a port. What an expensive logistical nightmare. Anytime I see Apple products being sold I feel like I'm watching someone getting beaten and mugged in an alley.

Did you listen to his final take on this? I just bought one of these because as a Mac developer I want something I can develop on (big screen, lots of cores and RAM (that I upgraded myself)) while supporting the Intel version of my apps for as long as possible. I wanted this Mac for good reason, along with many others like me, so calling it a bad investment outright for everyone is shortsighted. I plan on getting an Apple Silicon laptop when they come out so I can test my apps on it (and because the benefits of moving to Apple Silicon/Arm will be much more obvious in a battery powered device), but this iMac will be my development machine for years to come.

This is just my opinion, but I think this last intel based imac is more geared towards people that still want to use native bootcamp support. I think the ARM based macs can only support either linux or windows through VMs, which seriously hinder performance. This is the main reason I bought a 16” MBP 2 months ago despite knowing ARM based macs are just around the corner

I've just bought the 10 Core 2020 iMac and have fully thought about the updated versions coming up, however I got it to replace my 2017 3.5ghz i5 which has been fine, just not been able to handle Live Streaming with Guests. In Wirecast and having Logic open as well as Browser Tabs, I was hitting 90%+ CPU with my 2017 and only 720p, but the same with my 10 Core is about 9% with streaming at 1080p. So, it's the real world benefits, right now is what matters to me. As for how it looks, I couldn't give a Monkeys, it just replaces the space the old one was, same connections and migrated over. Back up and running in a day.

@@4partmedia ARM doesn't actually produce just one version of their architecture, or at least that's my understanding. Most phones used v7 for a while years ago, but if I'm remembering correctly the Nintendo 3DS uses v9 and v12 (two CPU units) and the Nintendo Switch uses an ARM-based design as well. But that's all a moot point, because every ARM chip is a custom chip. You see, they sell licenses, not CPUs, and a company isn't required to incorporate parts of the design that won't be used. Phone CPUs might not get the full feature set (I'm not an expert), in the interest of energy and thermal performance. However, ARM hasn't had any real incentive yet to develop CPUs for a PC. In theory, they could, and they simply haven't. That's all to say that we can't know for sure what the "ARM CPU" in the next iMac will actually look like, or what its capabilities might be. It's all unknown, but what is certain is that massive amounts of code will need to be recompiled to support such a change, and it likely only makes sense because of Apple's insistence on its sleek and compact computer designs. LTT actually pointed out in this video that the CPU in the Mac was running into its upper limits, and the Mac couldn't cool it properly. The most logical fix is to implement a cooler-running CPU, but evidently either Apple has less confidence in Ryzen than we do (keeping in mind productivity performance matters the most on Mac systems, and Ryzen beats Intel there) or they decided moving to ARM would confer an even greater thermal performance boost. No matter how this turns out, I'm not too concerned because I have no intention of buying an Apple device anytime soon.

To be fair, there's a technique which allows to stuff a lot of Unix exectuables for different ISAs and resources into an .app package and have it run as a UB, even with notarization. So, in fact, you can have a 5-way UB (32 and 64-bit PowerPC, 32 and 64-bit x86, and 64-bit ARM) and have it run on anything from really old versions of Mac OS X to macOS Big Sur. The only thing that Apple took away was the nifty checkbox from XCode and whatever APIs that were deprecated, but you can still develop all those separate binaries in different versions of XCode and stitch everything together after the fact. And Rosetta, of course, but it's not like more technologically-inclined users can't get a Snow Leopard VM going. ;) About the crappiest thing about those is really the lack of Retina/Hi-DPI support and assets, something you absolutely can't fix.

If we're talking about regular consumers - that's what would probably happen. And for those - these are great machines.

@@left4d0g I've been using a Mac for music making (hobby, not professional musician) since ca. 1987. I remember those 68k to PPC and PPC to Intel transitions well, too. In my experience, they both went surprisingly smoothly. I'm typing this on my 2014 iMac 5k, but DHL will bring my new iMac 27" with the 10-core processor and 2 TB SSD the day after tomorrow. I considered my options very carefully, but decided to order the last intel iMac, because it will have about 3x the processing power for music production compared to my current iMac, and... compatibility. I have invested thousands of euros in 3rd party music software and on a fast intel machine they will work great for the next 5 years. After that... well, I'm sure there will be a lot of great and stable music software for the Apple silicon Macs.

The problem is at the end of the day support for the older X86 architecture is going to sit with the app developers so that would mean anyone writing a program for Mac would need to effectively write 2 programs, 1 for the new ARM silicon and 1 for the old X86 and keep both of those programs updated and that is just not going to happen.

I was always of the mindset that Apple specifically engineers their products to be obsolete or flat-out break after three years or so. That is, barring some of their much older stuff. I mean, they wouldn't release a new version of their computers every year unless they got good returns on them. What better way to guarantee returns than to brick the older stuff with awful thermals, lack of software support, and that mysterious slowness that crippled most of my family's iPhones a few years ago? One thing to bear in mind, is that although Snow Leopard was Intel Only (offering performance increases and other benefits) the previous OS, Leopard got most of the same updates (like the new Safari). Also Leopard received security updates right up until 2013. So Apple didn't "drop support" for PowerPC 3 years after the first Intel Macs, it was 7 years later, and that was with a much smaller userbase that they have now.
