Fairphone is not a good phone, even if it has the incredibly long life and reparability I doubt anybody will be wanting to buy new parts in a few years, plus they removed the headphone jack (and they suddenly started making bluetooth earbuds and headphones) and has pretty bad hardware

I literally came here to comment Fairphone, am so pleased it is on top. I'm using a fair phone right now, and it works fine on t-mobile/mint. Murena is the main way to buy it in the US, which does NOT have play store support, but it isn't too difficult to either have the Original Fairphone shipped from Europe, or to simply install fair phone OS on a Murena fairphone (what I did.) I actually highly recommend fair phone. Being able to swap out the battery by itself sets it apart. If you use Murena, you basically get q bulletproof ad blocker built into the OS itself which is amazing.

Fairphone actually fits your description pretty well. Murena OS is more customizable and has some awesome features like a built in bulletproof ad blocker, but it does not work with Paid apps on the Playstore without some major tinkering (as it is "degoogled") so you may want to stick with the fairphone OS. I can vouch for it though, I daily drive the Fairphone 4 in the US

You can get around the USB2 speeds easily. I use a file explorer on my phone called CX File Explorer, you can permanently set up connections to network shares and copy+paste files and whole folders over wifi. It also shows up in the 'Share' list so I can skip finding the actual file if I'm just trying to send a single picture or video to my PC. Much quicker and less hassle than digging out a USB cable, plugging it in, and waiting for Windows to scan a folder with thousands of files in it before I can even start to copy. Also much less buggy than MTP on Windows. I've specifically referenced my current file explorer of choice, but I'm sure there are many others that offer the same features.

I can't say this enough, but I wish you'd get a Fairphone. It's essentially the Framework of smartphones: easy to repair, parts easily accessible, software spanning 5 years for features (possibly 8 if enough support is given by the consumers) and 8-10 for security, and it's pretty respectable specs-wise. I'm not sure about the bands, but that is something that can be checked on either their site or on GSMArena.

I have a fairphone 4 and never regretted my decision. It does what it needs to, and that it does good. The camera is ok, the battery is good, the screen is good, the formfactor is the sweetspot between small enough to not be a tablet in your pocket, and big enough to enjoy looking at it, that hardware is strong enough for everyday use. It's not that expensive and it just works. Long term android support is a big plus, and it's rugged AF. I dropped it multiple times, and the only thing that happend when I dropped in in my bathroom on the edge-side, is that the bathroom-tile now is missing a chunk. And even if something breaks, just order the replacement and swap it. A new display costs €80 and the battery being swapable, I see no reason why i would need to upgrade anytime soon. Even when the Android support is over... the firmware is open and I can go with /e/os or something like that.

Fairphone is probably the smart choice here, as others have rightfully pointed out. For an interesting oddball runner-up, I'll suggest a phone that LTT might not even be able to obtain (or use in Canada), but that would make for an amazing piece for both the main channel as well as for LTT labs to toy with - Samsung's S23 Tactical Edition. It's ruggedized, has night vision/low light capture modes, features like full radio disable, as well as Software Defined Radio support, VPN chaining and other doodads. It's just an interesting piece of hardware in and of itself. Toss it through a test gauntlet, see if it's as tough as they say it is.

+1 for the Sony Xperia 1, the screen (always on display) although on the smaller side due to its 21:9 ratio (but may benefit your smaller hands :)) is an absolute gem for watching content on, the colours are beautiful with a creator mode so points for accuracy (you can change the colour profile quite easily if you want something cooler or warmer) and the sound is surprisingly good probably thanks to its front facing stereo speakers. it has a 120hz option for the display as well as a headphone jack and a dedicated camera button which you can use to activate the camera by holding it down. calls havent dropped for me and the fingerprint sensor is on the side power button which is in just the right spot to have your phone unlocked and ready to go just from holding it naturally. the phone is speedy and rarely gets too hot (unlike past xperias im looking at you z5 premium), it has lived a fair amount of drops as did my z5 premium and also as a benefit to you are waterproof tho its not something that is openly said because legal side of it most likely. uses usb 3 with battery options geared towards saving the battery such as learning when you plug the phone in and sleep it will delay charging so its not on all night and can be set to charge to a cap of 80%. the xperia has a one hand mode which can easily be activated by an on screen shortcut. sorry for bad format was typing as watching. You've championed using older hardware for the sake or less e-waste before, and I think Fairphone have a solid approach to catering the used market with repairability. The promise of sourcing ethical materials is another massive benefit. I'm also really curious about their use of a IoT SoC for prolonged software updates on the Fairphone 5, and how fast the Fairphone 4/3/2/1 is today since they've never used the fastest chips but promise long software updates (are the software updates even worth it if the phone isn't fast enough? Aside from security).

I bought Asus Zenfone 10 recently and I am extremely satisfied with it. The camera is great, the specs are pretty much identical to Rog phone 7 and I am surprised how compact it is. But it will make a terrible workphone given it has no DeX support etc. But it does have 16 GB of RAM, snapdragon 8 gen 2, 512 GB of storage, 144 Hz AMOLED screen (albeit it is tiny by modern standards), fast wireless charging, 5G and Wifi 7 support, a gimbal for the camera (this one is huge, the footage from it is really well stabilised for a phone) and decent battery for the size (4300 mAh). It comes with Android 13 out of the box and since it is 2023 phone, I expect the 3 year support (as that is the manufacturer's declared warranty period). And it has a headphone jack and fingerprint scanner in powerbutton (I have really bad experience so far with underscreen scanners). But I am pretty sure the screen size is the deal breaker on this one and yeah... zenfone 10 has like 6 inch screen which is tiny for the workload like watching 4k video (it has 1080 screen anyway) or opening spreadsheets :/

Only 2 years of upgrades (ie 3 years of support) vs 4 on samsung (for 5 years), cheap display, thick bezels, plastic back, 50% more cost vs Samsung S23, and dual non-flagship cameras vs triple on competition. Samsung makes the best and most stable android skin on the market and have inhouse tweaks (such as the good lock app) and extensive software support. Pixels can't and could never compete to it, and since ASUS is based on AOSP (less features than pixel) it's less likely they can. Google's inhouse phones used to have better software than samsung, but that was before the introduction of OneUI with the S7. Pixels and Nexus phones (I owned 2 nexus phones) have never been stable to be used long term. Both of my nexus phones ended up with hardware faults after 2 years.

I can't see your reply, only have a notification of it. It stops after "Note 10...". I think yt hid it Cheap amoled displays have thicker bezels (esp. top and bottom) than the expensive ones. If you go to GSMarena you'll see the s23 is the same size and thinner than the zenphone, but it has .2in bigger screen. Also brighter. Yeah compared to Note 10 the bezels are smaller, but note 10 is from 2019 (the samsung one, not the cheap xiaomi one) Plastic back will deteriorate after 2 years regardless of whether you have a case on or not, whereas glass will look good as new for 4+ years as long as you don't drop it. It's also more premium. If you abuse your phones or don't use a case you might prefer plastic, otherwise glass is the way to go It turns out the main camera has the same specs as the S23, but the ultrawide is a bit cheaper and there is no telephoto. It's good that you like it, but for me it smells like a 450$ phone with an 800$ price tag. IMO there's no reason to buy it over an S23

No idea if it will work. Some users on reddit seem to suggest that it worked for them without any problems in Canada. I found an article from Fairphone named "Global Network Coverage" that shows the supported bands for each model and some things to be aware of.

iOS is great for user experience and for stable day to day use, but good luck on sideloading apps on it, you can only hope that the app is available on Test Flight. Android on the other hand lacks the ux/ui polish of the iOS, but sideloading apps is waaay easier, not to mention that there's way more apps available for android than for ios. My opinion is that Fairphone is the better choice for linus

I upgraded from the Note9 to the S23 Ultra. Though a more expensive option, it has expanded on everything I loved about my note9 with many improvements. The 100MP camera can record up to 8k video, ensuring a few years of viability for a content creator. Especially as often you enjoy finding yourself in tight places while filming.

+1 for Sony Xperia. I have the Xperia 5 III and it is honestly the best phone I have ever used. It is snappy, the screen looks great, it has a decent camera (great for a phone), and it is even easy to use with one hand. Plus the headphone jack and dual sim which are maybe not the most used features, but very inconvenient when missing. My biggest complaint is probably that the screen doesn't get very bright so it is a bit hard to use in direct sunlight.

Considering the investment in Framework, its mobile counterpart would be a Fairphone (minus the upgradeability of course) But many already picked up on that and it seems to be the most popular on reddit It doesn't have stereo speaker though, but it checks all the other soft requirements Other than that, my experience with many brands got me back to Samsung cause they ultimately are the most popular android brand and it's the most important factor when it comes to support, parts availability (and cost) and accessories compatibility. So I would say the cheapest Samsung that checks all the boxes would be the best choice. A mid tier option is more than enough for most people nowadays (and most of them still have an headphone jack !), and less power hungry cpu on a 4000 or 5000mah battery makes it last for days while still having good performance. But it all depends on how you use your phone and maybe a power user would push that hardware near 100% while a top tier chip at 50% would make the same battery last longer

I had a note 20 that fell off the top of my car on a busy speeding highway, took me 2 hours to find it and personally witnessed 7 cars and a semi go over it with the tires, screen face up and not even have a scratch! Otterbox defender case and no screen protector. Case was broken, but useable. Traded it in to samsung for full credit

I don't think the Asus is the most complete option though, because it doesn't have a lot of those features other than headphone jack. Funnily enough, I think the most comprehensive phones would be some of those cheaper chinese ones, as they feature almost everything except for a replaceable battery or interesting gimmicks. No water resistance (or weak resistance) and no wireless charging will be found there however. Sony phones are also quite feature rich, although they still don't have a replaceable battery (or many features further down the list), and they are quite expensive.

I don't think the Fairphone 5 is that fast. The phone is definitely easily repairable and efficient with 6nm QCM6490 chip, but down the line, I think Linus would be better off with something like a xperia 1 V which features a newer 4nm snapdragon gen 2. The Galaxy Xcover 6 pro fits the bill almost perfectly. Three programable buttons, removable battery, super durable built for use in the trades. Default power button is a fingerprint scanner too though you can make the power button any of the three programable buttons (top, left, right)
