10:50 If they want it to look screwless from the outside, there are a few metal inserts that can be pressed on to give the panel internal threads without being visible from the outside. You just find a few places where you can reach with the screwdriver and voila. Source: I have had to mill more than a few pockets for said inserts to fit into, so we could press said inserts. Depending on panel thickness, they might want to increase panel thickness a bit though.

Honestly the layout makes sense, especially since rooms... well, tend to have more vertical space than horizontal space. Thermals are going to be far better if each component gets its own access to fresh air. I'd love to have more of these types of cases for mini itx builds, especially if they can fit in AIO radiators for CPUs.

@@mikeloeven In practice it doesn't *need* to be removed. Everything can be accessed from the other side. So adhesive is technically fine. Flank your desk with one of those and a tower fan. Not only will they look fairly similar providing symmetry, but you get a fan blowing air on you when it's warm, and when it's cold if you move the tower fan next to it, you get a free bonus space heater to keep you nice and comfy.
@CommodoreFan64
@CommodoreFan64 Жыл бұрын
That's an idea, but I've owned a couple of tower fans, but to clean them you have to take them apart with 20+ screws depending on the model, and a bunch of plastic clips pulling them in 1/2, which is a true pain in the ass for what amounts to less cooling than a basic 12in oscillating floor fan that can be cleaned in just a few minutes with less than a handful of screws to remove if you want to take it down to the motor for serious cleaning.

Also, you cannot glue something as large as you are with hot glue because it cools/sets VERY fast, and by the time you do both sides of the case its already too cold on the other side. Hot glue (and most simple glues) needs some texture to grab on to. It can't grab smooth metal, as evidenced by how easy they just keep peeling it off. It is for things like cardboard, wood, fabric where it can seep into the fibers and hold on. To glue smooth surfaces, you need something that chemically bonds, like epoxy.

I love that you are adding lab grade tests into a "Linus style" video. I assume in the past you had someone do the benchmarks before the recording session, or even took the benchmark data from the actual video to make your graphs. But now you have lab grade testing to show data points. Very cool.

The problem with adhesive in aerospace is that you can't properly validate the strength of the bond so it's rarely used for critical structural applications. The famous Aloha airlines accident where the airplane turned into a convertible was actually because of an adhesive failure. They used adhesive to reduce the stress concentration on the rivets connecting two fuselage sections but the adhesive failed causing the rivets to get a higher load than intended leading to failure.

When using hot-glue: make a puddle, so it doesnt loose its heat as quickly - especially when glueing metal. metal makes it loose heat so qiockly that it doesnt get to really bond with the material (thats also a neat trick if you want something to be able to get the glue off of easily as well)

13:00 Not finished the video, but if the side-panel stays on now, it has nothing to do with the hot glue on the back of the panel, but everything to do with the hot glue on the seams. That's my guess, at least, cause I am pretty sure that hot glue cools off very fast when exposed to air, and by the time Linus finished applying all the hot glue to the case, most of that hot glue would have been un-sticky at that point. But by applying it to the seams, you are making sure the glue sticks to both parts of the case right away, so when it dries up and solidifies, it will be on the case and the panel properly.

hot glue tip... instead of laying a thin line of hot glue down instead use globs in corners about the size of a nickel or if object is heavy like that side panel quarter size. Having a fire source on hand helps too like a butane torch to heat glue after its put where you need it.

Hotglue can't be used to glue metal of that size with any meaningful adhesive effect because it cools off way to quickly twice over - first because of the time needed for that big a surface area, - and second because metal effectively sucks out all the heat a couple of times faster than it already would. I'd imagine two component Epoxy glue should do fine, especially one that doesn't harden fully / remains somewhat flexible, because the case metal is too thin for the size to remain rigid itself if handled / transported.

I get why they decided industrial glue over screws, aesthetics, but they could try flush screw, powder-coat the panel, and use nut to fasten, so they still have this same look without compromise, can still use the glue as additional fastening if they want and minimises the amount of screws they'd need.
