As someone who has worked in projection for quite some time now, the vast majority of movie theaters don't use dual projector setups to screen 3D content, they actually use a single projector with a polarizing screen placed in front of the lens. This is done for a number of reasons, primarily cost, but it also comes with a heap of downsides including severe brightness reduction and also flattening of the colours. 3D fell out of fashion both because it was somewhat gimmicky, outside of standout titles like Avatar, most films used it poorly (looking at you bad Marvel 3D conversions). It also fell out of fashion due to the lack of consumer interest. Whilst the audience might not be able to immediately notice and describe the downsides, they knew that it wasn't as visually impressive as they remembered (due to the colour and brightness constraints). Dual projector setups are almost always superior for projecting 3D content. It's a shame that they fell out of fashion. This DIY equivalent is awesome and it's nice to see a little more interest in projection!

The 3d format would be in a entirely different place if it would have gone with 4k 3d vs 1080p 3d as half the vertical resolution is vhs quality the technology was there the implementation was horrendous and killed the market.

Greatest stereo 3D gaming setup of all time? 480Hz projection exists. Could you imagine dual projection with 480Hz for each eye? Even 240Hz would be unreal and is not something that VR headsets can currently accomplish, and VR is not a shared experience. I’m so pumped that you’re pumped about this. I’m also going down this exact same rabbit hole! The projectors I’m personally using were $90k new 10 years ago and they’re capable of 12k lumens each. I’m the Chief Engineer at Keith Yates Design and we design private cinemas. Some of our projects have projectors that are the state of the art and cost upwards of USD $300k. The stereo 3D I’ve experienced on projects is just one of those things where it’s literally impossible to communicate how much better it is than the 3D experience at your local cineplex. That’s one of the primary reasons I’m building my own dual projection rig, to share the experience with my friends and family, but to also get more people in the industry exposed to how amazing it can be. I cannot overemphasize enough how brightness contributes to the 3D effect and total experience, but I think you get that… but it’s also something to be experienced and we need to get you in front some of the tech that is available. I think you’ve got one of the absolute best starting configurations for your setup with quality polarizing filters, glasses, and screen. The projectors can always be upgraded. There’s so much more that can be discussed…

Lots of repair on all electronics too, always loved to tinker with stuff from a early age and never stopped lol. Can only imagine the Quality of the setups u see and even the 10 year old ones are still gonna be totally amazing plus beat out any consumer/semi pro grade stuff today, yes tech always gets better but even the good used ones hold their value well. I have got to experience some of what your talking about and it literally stopped me in my tracks when the image came up on the screen, all i could do was just stand there in awe cause i thought i knew high end image quality but never at the level i saw that day and several more:). Probably more useful with already polarized light such as laser. - If you need to rotate light polarization, use chiral molecule such as sugar. When you pass linearly polarized light it'll slowly rotate it's polarization.

I have to say I got excited at first, because I love 3D movies and have built home 3D projection setups, but then got a bit disappointed that you folks went with a polarised setup and not one that uses interference filters. Interference filters is what offers the best result and you don't need a special screen for it! It's also completely independent of viewing angles. Gosh I would love to help you guys to make that setup even better. I used to build 3d setups at small events with less budget then you spent on the screen, and I'm tempted to say that the result probably was better.
@DuudeWhatDoesMineSay3 күн бұрын
That sounds interesting! Does it work with single projector setups? Laser projectors?
@evilscientress3 күн бұрын
@@DuudeWhatDoesMineSay You need two Projectors. Ideally you want to mod the projectors and put the interference filters after the light source and before the DLP chip and filter wheel. For laser projectors is more complicated and depends on the light they produce. if they produce a full spectrum white light, it will work, if not, it won't work. It's the same technology as Dolby 3D uses.

My old Philips 3D TV has an option for "2 player Gaming". It uses the 3d technology to make split screen fullscreen, so when using special 3D glasses that had both lenses polarized the saw way, you could both have your own screen. For anyone interested in 3D who is scared off by the complexity of this video: Trust me, most of this was unnecessary. There are many 4K3D ultra-short throw laser or standard projectors that work with DLP link glasses and have no visible flicker and virtually zero crosstalk (and definitely don’t cause headaches as implied). They will also be brighter & not have the alignment/sync issues he couldn't fix. As for content, Blu-ray 3D is the best way to go and there are many affordable players available that also do UHD. In short, you can have a higher than theater quality 3D setup that’s basically plug and play, & will be far cheaper than what’s shown here plus better visual quality.
@NiceHeistFilms3 күн бұрын
@@jonathansabinvarietyfilms Seriously, this. I love that he's highlighting 3D for how awesome it is, I'm among many who are anxiously awaiting its comeback, but cringing so hard at him making it seem so difficult to get a good experience in current day. I got the XGIMI Horizon Ultra last year almost entirely because of its 3D performance and it blows any theater experience I've ever had out of the water. The newest projectors from this year are said to be even better. BluRays are definitely a great way to go and great 3D players like the Sony S6700 I use are like 30 bucks on eBay. I like the Zidoo media players even better though, they really allow you to tweak the image perfectly. Thankfully with VR and AR glasses gaining a bit of popularity 3D seems like it's slowly coming back.

@@woodenotaku I don't really think there's a good way to use a single BD player and have it output left and right images to separate projectors, but i might be wrong. Seems like a bigger hassle than just going the HTPC route, which also lets them do 3D gaming as mentioned at the end of the episode.

I used to have the 3D-vision glasses in the past. It’s a very different experience. But to make this technology more available for most people you should consider creating the same 3D experience (video and game) but with a VR-headset and compare the differences. A VR-headset has everything to give perfect stereoscopic vision and the passthrough view would make it possible to have a virtual screen, as big as you want, in 3D while outside of that seeing everting in your room. Being it the popcorn, the mouse and keyboard or a controller. Honestly I don’t understand why VR-companies don’t invest some of their resources into that. It would open so much more possibilities and games that it would be interesting to a way bigger market, a gateway drug to real VR. Even the people who don’t really want to use VR will then have a good use for a VR-headset. Then there is a good use case for using a VR-headset without needing a full room to jump and walk around. So for sure consider investigating that and comparing it with a setup like this. Cost, nausea (wonder if it’s less then VR and how it compares with shutter-glasses), ease of use/ setup and the possibility to get banned from a game for cheating because the anti-cheat software does not like it…
@TigTex3 күн бұрын
I actually thought that VR would make 3D movies relevant once again. But nope! 3D just keeps on failing and it's such a beautiful experience. We have two ears, we listen to multichannel audio. We have two eyes however we see plain 2D content...

@Benjamoose3 күн бұрын
@@sandmaster4444 Indeed, but given what I saw in the video, it could absolutely be done cheaper and less jankily now that they've gone through the trial and error for the audience. Beyond the upfront investment of the choices they made, there really wasn't that many steps to replicate.
@novantha13 күн бұрын
Tbh I think the main bottleneck is the light polarization. Both the display screen and the polarizing filters were pretty pricey, but my suspicion is that there’s probably a sensible and less janky way to do it. I’m not sure exactly what it would look like. It might be that there’s some sort of pattern in an aluminum or stainless steel sheet that could be pressed in that serves as both a screen / polarizer (with the projectors projecting from different angles) or it might be that there’s just a better way to do it in general.
@Benjamoose3 күн бұрын
@@novantha1 Yeah, you summarized my thoughts pretty much exactly. It's one of those projects where the steps themselves in practice are relatively few and the number of items in the chain are also relatively few, so it's all about potentially finding cheaper or sneakier ways of doing some of them. Like you said, I'm not entirely sure what that would be, but it feels like it could be iterated on with new discoveries or figuring out some sneaky alternatives. Like, right now the solution for the polarizing filter isn't immediately obvious, but I'd bet with enough research an alternative could be found that's cheaper. One of the main reasons it was so expensive to get those filters was because they were ordering from a supplier that isn't really for non-commercial or small orders, so they'll charge more up front for stuff like that to offset the inconvenience.
