also it helps AMD in getting MORE customers. Because not everyone will go to the newest CPU - the costs are higher and it's still a first gen of AM5, and many, especially companies, are not early adopters. But they know, they can still upgrade their Zen 1 to a Zen 3 in the future and get quite the performance of a Zen 4. @@Kevin-gf4im To be fair the 5900/5950 weren't supposed to be the gaming chips. People just tried to make them into that. The 5800X was the sweet spot because all the cores and cache were a single chip instead of the chiplet design where everything works until whatever is in cache gets split or the workload ends up split between the two chiplets which hurts performance. That's why they added the 3D cache to the 5800 and not the 5900/5950 in the first place. It was in the best place to take advantage of that performance uplift. Being able to play through about 50% of the PS3's library, albeit at at 1080p/4k and 60FPS, when a normal PS3 can play 100% of it's library flawlessly is the only reason whatsoever to build a high-end gaming rig or care about your PC being able to do PS3 emulation. The thing that worries me about the 3D series is that it can't be overclocked. That in itself isn't such a bad thing, since the numbers speak for themselves, but I feel like the reason behind it is thermals. If the next gen chips run too hot, I wonder if the thermal ceiling will even be high enough to run it with a decent frequency. That extra layer may add too much insulation and cook the chips. They'd have to ratchet back the top speed by a lot. Here's hoping that's not the case. The potential for uplift would make it an absolute beast.

This information has given me confidence in my purchases. Right around the time of the announcement of 7000 series I built a new PC and was wondering if I should wait till this came out. However looking at performance increase, price, cooling requirement and compatibility, I think having bought last gen was a good choice. I have a 5600X and a 3060 (I wanted a 3070,had the money, but was unavailable) and it's given me enough performance on any title with no more tdp than 300 watts on the whole machine at max load. Looking at these numbers, my setup feels more reasonable. Especially considering ddr5 and new gen motherboards.

I don't think i would have gone that route. I built a x570 5900x system when only rumors of the new chips were comming out. And I'm pretty happy with my choice (came up from a 1700x). But had it been a few months ago that I wanted to build. I would have for sure waited for the 7000 chips. Amd will prob support am5 for 2 full generations of chips and 3 if we're lucky. That will have made the platform a massive win again. I put my 5900x in my x370 bord and it worked. I could see the same happen for am5. Only reason I swapped boards was because lighting hit it and blow the audio caps out. So I had to use wireless. Which isn't too bad, but I also lost like 6 USB ports of the 12 it came with. Which was becoming a real inconvenience. Still ran for years afterwards, so not mad at all.

Well, I'd find it very interesting as well, having played around with PCSX2 and RPCS3 as well, but you need to spend some time researching into the topic, playing around with settings and settling for some, but then again maybe you'd have to adjust settings for different hardware, which makes comparisons problematic and it's a bit fragile, as they're (or at least RPCS3) still early versions - I initially had RPCS3 as part of my benchmark suite, but was actually not able to get it (with TLoU) running on my R7 2700X, after upgrading from an i7-3700K. :/ Only later on managed to run it on my current R7 3700X. Also, as they're early versions, updates come fairly frequently that improve performance, meaning it might be problematic to use for comparisons over longer time periods. And finally you'd need the respective consoles and games, but that's not really a problem for a big channel I guess.

It will be interesting to see how AMD's AVX-512 performs compared to Intel's implementation considering it has 2 256-bit buses rather than a single 512-bit bus so it will take 2 cycles to complete the instructions. On the plus side, the frequency shouldn't drop as much when using these instructions:)

It would be more helpful if you gave us numbers for efficiency (i.e. performance per Watt), rather than power draw. It doesn't matter if CPU A draws 50% more power than CPU B under load, when it also finishes it's task in half the time. In the end it still used less energy to perform the same work. All that matters is efficiency (and maybe idle power consumption).
@juanc.duartea.75752 жыл бұрын
Power consumption really matters if you have a limited power supply, or when building a system, you have to carefully consider the PSU. Not all that matters is efficiency, it matters the cost of it, be it power consumption, temperature, or price. If it is really important to you, you can infer the efficiency/power ratio just by looking at performance metrics shown and compare it with total power consumption.

@@LaZoR50 Cache is used in everything, the difference comes down to if the app needs more data than can fit in cache at any given time.
