Maybe it's just me, but I think I would love to see more videos of this type Specifically, when somebody needs information on something even if it's just you know a family member of someone that works there they do a video on it which granted is self serving as much as anything else but, when you think about it they're helping people and putting a video out that might help other people besides those in the video

Love this kind of video. Parents and older family members always ask for my advice but at a budget which I’m not always familiar with all the options. Same with some of my family members - they don't want to spend more than 200€ on a phone. But I know their income, and I know they can damn well afford to spend 300, so I just tell them that 200 makes no sense since they'll have to get a new one sooner, effectively spending the same.

Agreed, in the past when trying to make recommendations for cheap tablets, laptops, etc., I've always found that there's a ton of reviews and it's easy to find information on high-end products, but it's been difficult to find information on the lower-end stuff. Especially for people who don't care that much, but just want something that works, lasts a while, and is a relatively good experience.

my go to strategy for good budget phones as a big brother of 8 siblings, I can safely say, as long is it has a snapdragon chip not older than 2 years and a 4200mah battery, its a good phone. For laptops, as long as it has a cpu not older than 2 years and ABSOLUTELY has an IPS screen, you're good to go. If you ever see an MX graphics card for +100 bucks, dont do it. It will probably have worse graphics than the integrated graphics on the cpu. If you need a gpu for a bit heavier tasks, only look for GTX graphics on laptops. 1050 being the minimum. (Bonus note for phones, if you plan on keeping the phone for more than 2 years, avoid AMOLED/OLED screens... they ALWAYS burn in at 1-2 years and white becomes yellow be it a 200$ phone or a 800$ one.)

I love budget videos like this, taking an entire market and finding the best bang for your buck out of the bunch. Only issue I have is that this video will most likely be well out of date in a couple years, so just having a yearly budget series, for phones, laptops, etc. would be great so that the budget market is always transparent and people looking for new devices always either have somewhere to get good info, or something to look forward to.

The tablet space is pretty stagnant and non competitive. Just change the year model and it will probably still hold true. a refurbed 2022 iPad will probably be the best pick in $250 (or maybe a bit more for inflation) in 2026, Samsung will probably still have the best tablet option in the android side in 2026, fire tablet ‘26 being the “I just need something to watch videos and search the web with” device. ONN being the cheapest of all options and probably the one you should just pass on. And then insert X variable unknown brand tablet that sits in the mediocre middle, not too good or too bad for the money. If this video was made 4 years ago, you’d roughly pick from the same choices. The tablet space is truly unremarkable and non-innovative even in the higher end. iPads and Samsung are the only ones duking it out and iPad really doesn’t have to try that hard to beat Samsung.

The S6 Lite is one of the closest things to a reasonable tablet where I live. Almost everything else is either way overpriced, or utter crap, often both (even it sits at 335€, which gives you an idea of the market). I was lucky that I pulled a trigger on a different model during a pre-order period, so I got a newer, faster tablet with a bigger and better screen (but no bundled pen) for slightly less and it turned out to not be a dud. As for the older generation, my wife's grandparents have a tablet that the telecom gave them for free and it's just as bad as you imagine. It's at least relatively large, so they can read the news on it and it sort of does the job for video calls, although, when we call them, it doesn't always ring as the poor 1GB Android thingy sometimes puts Viber and Skype to sleep. I was in a state of shock when that thing died and my brother in law bought them the same one, but his reasoning was that they are at least familiar with that one and I couldn't argue with that. They are both over eighty, never owned a computer (I'm not sure about smartphones), and, you explain something to them, they get it, do it right themselves, but they often forget in a few days and they actually live in another country so it's not easy to pop by when they need their memory refreshed or have a technical issue.

@@voteDC it can- technically... Androids don't age as well as iPhones, that's just how it is. That doesn't make Androids worse than iPhones, but they simply don't age as well, and this is very important to people that need to sell their devices before buying a new one. Its just a proprietary charging interface which holds the tablet up at a comfortable angle. The, 'Smart' behind the M series was dual far range microphone to be able to use the M8 as a Google Assistant. There was nothing on their website to indicate the dock pins or what the dock actually did. Its not until I got it home did it dawn on me. Lenovo was being creative on marketing. Frankly the real reason why I bought the M8 was their Dolby Atmos chip. A previous Lenovo tablet of mine had the Dolby SS chip which means I use my tablet as my music driver for Bluetooth instead of my phone. Definitely a great idea and executed well. I think the S6 Lite or A8, or a tweaked Fire HD10 are great options. But my god the jump up to the Xiaomi Pad 5 or base iPad is huge. Going from Tiger T610 and T618 to either an A12 or a Snapdragon 860 is mind blowing in terms of snappiness and capabilities. I’d go Xiaomi for the nicer design compared to the dated iPad look, but either is great. Though I got my dad an HD10 and added Google services for him at Christmas as it was only £80!

@@jevieyt it seems a brilliant option. Good power and a great design. I'd probably choose it over the base iPad for the nicer design and USB-C over lightning. Between that and great phones like the Poco or the Mi 11 Lite recently Xiaomi has been kicking arse in the budget/midrange space!
@SaltyMaud
@SaltyMaud 2 жыл бұрын
Yup. Xiaomi pad 5 is a pretty safe choice. Superior screen to dated base ipad and pretty decent speakers to go with it. The only area where base ipad pulls slightly ahead is raw performance, but that little bit of extra performance doesn't really make a meaningful difference when tablets are for some casual browsing and media consumption, and definitely not at the cost of a worse screen. Base ipad has been a good midrange entry tablet for a long time, but now that there is competition again, it's no longer the best and only option. My only annoyance with pad 5 is the unnecessarily heavy duty first party flip case - it sure keeps the tablet scuff free, but it alone adds more than half the tablet's own weight.

I'm noticing a lot of comments talking about the Galaxy Tab A7, and I think it's important to address that the value just is NOT there. Comparing The A7 ($200-250) to the 9th gen iPad ($330). The iPad gives you 2.2x CPU performance, and nearly SEVEN TIMES Graphics performance (120% CPU, 600% GPU) for only 50% more cost. the iPad also has 3GB of RAM vs 2GB, 6watt TDP vs 9watt (power efficiency), a MUCH better camera, and 5 years of software support (vs just ONE year for the A7, since it already is a year old). it is such an absolute no-brainer to go with an iPad if you are in the "budget tablet" market. It is the best "value" that you can possibly get in this market. It might not be the "cheapest" but it will certainly carry your money the furthest. Just save an extra $100 over the course of a month or two, and then buy yourself a MUCH better device, that will last 3 or 4 years longer than the next closest android competitor. Not to mention that app developers are more inclined to support old iOS devices because of the 60% market share! So even after your 5+ years of Apple's software support are up, you'll probably still be using Netflix, Spotify, KZbin, Candy Crush, Etc for another 2-3 years before you need to even consider a new device. $330 for 8 years of solid CPU *and* GPU performance??? No-brainer!!!

Most tablets are used for youtube and Netflix, I have an old ipad 4 and ipad mini that no longer run those apps. Basically only the browser works but barely. Overtime Apple will keep doing this forcing you to upgrade and you or some unlucky person will end up with a paperweight. Same thing happened with my ipod touch , the KZbin app just stopped working. Any old Android device will run software versions for that device, though no security updates if your not clicking on random links and sticking to apps you will be fine.
@gierrah
@gierrah 2 жыл бұрын
@@triggahappyyt5420 Remember, the 4th gen iPad is near 10 years old now. The reason you can't use the apps is because the services that allowed them shut down access from older apps to the server. Do you have a 10 year old android that still accesses every service without issue? Those services losing support for the older apps isn't Apples fault, it's the fault of the app makers dissallowing the old versions from access. It's the reason I've stayed far away from Roku or smart TVs in general, and will just rely on a 10 year old computer connected to my tv. I went with the newest gen iPad mini because I know parts will long remain available for a flagship device when the battery needs to be replaced down the line, and the particular apps I use will continue to work regardless of if services shut down. Also there is no real competing android device in the size category.

While for the rest of us Apple´s efforts to not let us do what we want with our things might bother us, it's incredibly useful for older people. The amount of bloatware and junk that I’ve had to clean off of my visually-impaired grandpa’s android devices is astounding. There’s a new “Cleaner” every time I use them. It’s not like he was even fooled by them in the first place, he just clicks on stuff by accident and can’t see well enough to get back to what he was doing, so over time his stuff gets bogged down. You’d never run into that issue on an iPad. You’ll click an in-app advertisement at worst.

@@bcj842 I used to buy into apple being "more intuitive", but when I got my late 70s dad a smartphone I bought him an Android, because he's cheap. I called him a few times a week and taught him to use it over the phone (we talked on the landline until he was comfortable with it). Every couple of years I got him a new android phone and things were great. He even started ordering things off ebay, and aliexpress on his android phone as he rolled into his 80s, and learned to use the paypal account I helped him set up. Then ~4 or 5 years later I bought him an Iphone, because I thought it would be a smoother experience and my mom, who already had an iphone, could help him if he had questions. He could *NOT* figure out how to use it at all. It was so, so, so bad. He rage-broke two iphones by throwing them. I just ordered him a new android for Black Friday and will help him set it up this week. [My first phone was the first iphone, and I loved it, but I switched to android because I love tinkering. There are things I like and dislike about both--but after my dad's experience I no longer even a little bit think apple is intuitive for the non-technical user. In fact, he had several problems with his last two iphones that made -*-me-*- want to throw them, and required either sending them back to apple, or agonizing loooong phone calls with support (before he gave up and busted them). And I worked in IT and tech support professionally--but the thing that got him wasn't build quality, it was the interface, which he could -*-not-*- seem to learn a tenth as easily as android. For reference, my dad had never touched a computer before I bought him his first smartphone, nor had he ever touched a tablet. The first phone I got him was a google pixel, fwiw, and he took to it like a duck to water. I don't think an iphone is more intuitive or easier-- they were just the first, so it was what most people first experienced, and Apple was quick to capitalize on that, and people were quick to fail to understand that whatever you learn first is what you'll likely prefer and find "better."

I'm still using my iPad Air from like 2014, which I received as a gift even though I never thought about buying a tablet. Granted, I'm not gaming on it, but unless you're playing massive 3D games it can handle pretty much anything. I'm using it mostly for light movies (although a lot of x265 encoded movies seem to lag, depending on how heavily compressed they are), and reading and sometimes note taking, and occasionally doodling on the notes app when I'm bored. I doubt his father is much of a gamer, so even something this old second-hand probably still works well for his purposes, and would be much better than buying a more expensive but crappier non-apple tablet. My dad grew up in much tougher times than I did, so saving every little buck meant everything to him for survival, that's why he would go for a $100 one instead of $300, it's second nature to him, no matter how many times I try to explain to him that the $100 is going to be more costly to him in a few years (or months 🤷‍♀), when it stops working or experiences issues much quicker than the higher priced ones. I inherited my dad's frugal nature but I'm using it in a smarter way since I grew up around tech and I know how much 'e-waste' there is in the market. I spend a lot on something because I expect to keep it for longer. I only replace my gaming mice every 5-7 years, and when people around me tell me why do you have a gaming mouse when you rarely game anymore? The answer is product life is much higher. I can spend $10 every few months on a new mouse and I'd lose a lot more money for a lot less value and a worse experience, and for what? I'm still on my second gaming mouse, bought in 2017. Aside from needing cleaning once, never had any issues with it. I bought a $1500 laptop instead of a $1000 one for the same reason. My oler $400 laptop which I bought quickly out of necessity back in college was hell to deal with and I'm glad to be rid of it forever. My phones also last me 4-5 years, with my recent one just a few months old. I cheaped out on an SSD once and it died after 2 years, bought a slightly more expensive one and it's still amazing and fast (relatively) after 7 years. This got way longer than I intended, anyway... TLDR: Never cheap out on tech guys, you save a lot of value on the long run.

Massive 3D games? Mobile games still look like they're made for PS3, Xbox 360, and WiiU. Only a few exceptions like Genshin Impact look anything remotely like a PS4, Xbox One, or Switch game. I highly doubt there's any mobile game right now that resembles something for Steam Deck, PS4 Pro, and Xbox One X

@@youtubeshadowbannedme I only mentioned that to be safe honestly. I never played many games on it, nor do I know other 3D mobile games than Genshin, but seeing as it struggled with certain kinds of videos it was fair to assume it would struggle with certain 3D games as well. It is after all 8 years old.

@@KabooM1067 huh? They are long lasting I guess, though I've only ever owned a standard iPad (6th gen). Still going strong though I've noticed some wifi issues. I was asking about an ssd you said you used which lasted 7 years, because I'm looking to buy an ssd but i only find negative reviews 😅
