Try this, pick out a sacrificial GPU and set it aside. then go vacuum your entire house and gather thepet hair and dust from the vacuum. then take this dust and pour it into the gpu fan while it spins, therefore sucking in more dust than what could be normal under regular conditions. once you have finished with the Artificial Dust Injection benchmark the card. and compare it to the benchmark you did before the A.D.I. @Mytagforhalo9 жыл бұрын
Homeslice The point was that this particular card wasn't too dirty i n the first place, and as such had no difference on the cooling. That tiny percentage is more likely due to the change in thermal paste. If you had a filthier card, there would be a bigger improvement.
@-DeScruff9 жыл бұрын
Homeslice It wasn't that dirty. The 5870 was quite the warm card, and the fan in it was always loud.
@foufoufun9 жыл бұрын
Homeslice that 1 degree and 2% fan speed look more like a statistical error margin than an improvement lol. Just using the duster in the fan to get rid of the excess dust would have made the trick. The inside of the cooler is kinda like a video game console or a laptop, it so tight inside that no dust gets in. I clean my PC every 2 weeks, including removing the GPUs and dusting them. I have, on occasion, vacuumed the fans too to get rid of as much dust/hair as possible. Some people say vacuuming your PC is a big no-no, but it gives me the BEST performance improvements. I have a dog and my PC shares a room with a tumble-dryer, so it gathers lots of dust/dander/hair. After a clean, it can go from 95 degrees C to 35 degrees C. I'm NOT exaggerating.

I once cleaned a friends HD4870 which had a nice thick patch of dust on the "bottleneck" part of the cooler. It was a direct head exhaust card, so it was essentially blocking all airflow through the card. While gaming it was always in panic mode where it would throttle and spin the fan to 100%. I cleaned it out and replaced thermal compound and it made all the difference in the world. It was quiet and actually a bit faster afterwards because it wasn't throttling anymore.
@emiliano89053 жыл бұрын
Have not cleaned it in almost 4 years. The whole airflow on the heat sync was blocked and the fan was extremely dusty. After I cleaned the filthy GPU the temps went down from 80 to 27 degrees Celsius on idle. Thanks!

prepareuranus Not a damn bit of difference between Fahrenheit and Celsius other than most of the world uses Celsius. We should all be using Kelvin. #kelvinmasterrace If anything, Fahrenheit is more useful day-to-day than Celsius. Anything below 0F is fucking cold, anything above that is fucking hot. That means you get 100degrees that actually matter. While Celsius that range is more like -18 to 38. So you only get 60degress that matter.
@KabooM10679 жыл бұрын
Hapie Star You don't really need that many degrees really. It only feels more complicated and hard to interpret, at least for us who were taught with Celsius/Kelvin throughout our whole academic journey (which is still ongoing).

Can confirm. I hadn't cleaned my GPU in 10 years.(I had never taken it out and the fan was on the bottom of the card so when I cleaned my PC the air never got into the fan..). It's a Geforce 8800 but it couldn't even run League of Legends on anything but the lowest settings. When I turned any graphical options up it would make a noise like a vacuum cleaner and got unstable FPS. After cleaning it with compressed air (from a real compressor) it can run League of Legends and many other more graphically demanding games on much higher settings and with considerably less noise. Definiteely a lesson learned for me.
@polraudiozion11569 жыл бұрын
I did this 3 weeks ago. My heatsync was so bad that canned air couldn't get the dust out so i had to take the heatsync completely off and give it a good washing in the sink lol. Worked perfectly, lowered my temps by 25%.
@Trisentinel9 жыл бұрын
I had fantastic experience of cleaning my 3 years old Asus G74 laptop. It became loud as lawnmower and every game stuttered significantly after just few minutes of gaming. I have two cats so I guessed that it's fans are cluttered with fur. Dis assembling this tank was too stressful for me to do it (to access it's interior you have to rip it to the bone including screen so i passed) so I called for serviceman. With his help I was able to clean fans using straight cable ties inserted into the fans (so it won't turn while blowing air). As an air intake to blow dust out we used pressurized air and one of us kept vacuum cleaner to suck fur from the other side. It worked and my laptop works as new. I don't hear fans anymore and I have no stutter anymore.

I've de-retarded my case by sealing every smallest opening except the pantyhose-filtered intakes. Result - nothing to clean after 2 years.
@harrisonjc8 жыл бұрын
+Tome4kkkk How did you seal the case, as well as mount the pantyhouse? I'm just wondering because I might try it out.
@Tome4kkkk8 жыл бұрын
+Harrison Campbell My case is (used to be;)) a CM Gladiator 600 bad cheapo and not much is left of it after my modifications. Bigger surfaces with openings I sealed with cardboard mounted with silicone (you can buy transparent one). Smaller openings - just silicone. If you use negative pressure case like I do you can strap a very thin piece of plastic foil hanging near an opening and it will self-seal the opening. And vice versa for positive pressure cases. Then I removed ALL grills. You've got to be seriously impaired to leave any intake drill hole or hex punched grills. Use wire ones if you have children or other critters. Mounting pantyhose: On a 2 mm steel wire frame, with hot glue. So not adjustable but I made sure I can get out the frame quickly to replace the pantyhose piece with a different tensioning on gluing. I didn't have to though. During the gluing process you have full control over the size of the meshing. Hell, you can even make it non-uniform. I went for meshing slightly too big so that I hoover it only once a week. After a year I go in with compressed air, blow it onto the motherboard etc. and barely any dust gets lifted. A tip: Filterboxes are the shit! Example: bottom feed PSU intake fan. I've removed the grill and the default tiny foam filter so already a big improvement to the flow rate. Then I made a two-three layer bandage skirting around the entire periphery of the case. The PSU is clean after a year and it has a huge filterbox to feed from. Barely any flow loss.
@SimonZellox8 жыл бұрын
Or you set up your fans for positive air pressure inside your case. This is much better since you can get rid of dust when you cover all intakes with dust filters.

This gpu wasnt dirty enough to see any improvement. A few years back i bought a ps3 (the original) second hand after my old one got the YLOD. The second hand ps3 was very very dusty, and fan speeds were very loud. So i took the whole thing apart and found so much clusters of dust that seem to have come from the carpet. After cleaning every single nook and cranny and re-applying the thermal paste, the ps3 was whisper quiet and still functioning to this date. Mind you its been about 3 years now since the clean, and it over 8 years old. I have played non stop 13 hours straight multiple times over the holidays and no problems at all! Dust is the biggest killer of electronics.

I have a GTX285 from XFX that uses an almost identical design. It was running for almost a decade without being cleaned. You wouldn't believe the amount of dust that came out the back when I blew some air through it. Should have held onto the fan but thankfully I didn't bork it so I guess I got lucky there!

This is even more relevant now days with boosting relying on thermals, may be a good video to revisit for new viewers

What I did: I put the video card under the water stream, then use a hair fan drier to dry everything as soon as possible. I tried only 2 times but with different cards and they still work up to day. Very fast and risky trick, but it worked for me. Or what I always use and works without risk: some people use vacuum cleaners, while I use hairdryer to take all the dust fast and cheap.

I failed my attempt to clean my GPU with a vacuum cleaner a week ago and lost all hope, thank god this video came out.

I just got a free 7970 and 800watt PSU from a friend's old system. It was a third hand system, the PSU was SO caged with pet hair from year and years it was crazy. The computer was shutting off during use, which is why he gave the parts away. I'm almost certain the PSU was the problem. I cleaned the GPU and applied new thermal paste as well, and put the 2 components in an older system I had lying around. Now I have a test spare parts system that can game! Runs Doom at 80-110 FPS at High with Vulkan!

got an old zotac gtx 760 from a friend and he said its not working anymore. just one look at it and you knew why. took me an hour to clean the whole thing. there was literally a 1 cm thick dustwall in it that was blocking all the air xD

I use to put my graphics card in the washing machine on 30 C. It has worked great so far and my graphics card (Nvidia r7 270) comes out clean and shining. Water isn't bad for your computer unless electricity runs while it's wet. Then I put it in the dryer so it dries faster. The same procedure can be done with your t-shirt

This is exactly the kind of video I wanted to publish few weeks ago, but I gave up. I had a HD5870 that reached 90 degrees Celsius with 50% fan speed. If I only knew you would make this video, I'd provide my own card, and it would have a much bigger effect.

It shouldn't have to be said, but since I get asked every summer by at least a handful of people.. here we go. Idle, and max temps on components will rise with the temperature of the air in the environment that your machine is in. So your machine that runs super cool in the winter will run hotter in the summer if you don't have some kind of air conditioning. Even liquid cooling set ups will run a little hotter although not by as much as with air cooling.

Well I had a different experience. When I pulled the heat sink off my 5850 from early 2010 a couple of months ago the thermal past was thin dry and chalky and the vrm's thermal pads fell apart at the slightest touch. So replaced it all and good as new now.

I had a 5850, the reference cooler was so awesome I pre-ordered the card knowing that newer, cooler, and faster OC options would come out at the same price. I really REALLY liked the old radeon 4870's reference design. Now that was a cool looking card. Now days I have the new R9 380 and I am just like, well it works..

I had a video card I got from a friend a while ago and it got extremely hot, up near 90c. And, no surprise, it would lock up shortly after any game was started. It had a blower type cooler, I took it completely apart(A can of air didn't help it). I found that the inlet(Not normally accessible) for the heat sink fins was completely blocked by about 1/8 of a inch of a solid piece of dust. I cleaned it up and it was topping out at 60c and it no longer locks up. Linus's video doesn't really demonstrate, but if your card is really dusty it can make a huge difference.

I still have a 2gb version with 6 mini dp of that 5870 lying around. It was my first dedicated graphics card and was quite badass back in.. ikd 2009 or so? But at some point it was hitting 90°C in vacuum cleaner mode, despite me cleaning it and replacing thermal compund, wich was the time I decided to upgrade. It still works though, despite just lying arround in random places all the time with not protection (currently on my windowsill)

I found out that using a large paintbrush can also help clean out dust. Works better on lower fin density heatsinks though.

I did this last week :) No dust and no hair buildup! My GPU was overheating (102c at 100% fan speed) in GTA V. Then i removed the stock "thermal paste" and applied my favorite paste. My max GPU temp is now 63c at 19% fan speed in GTA V :) I can't believe how horrible the stock "thermal paste" is..

well... I'm an engineer, IT guy, draftsman for electrical schematics and I have a good knowledge on most electronic devices and I've worked extensively with computer fans since I use them a lot for building PCs (duh) and also for high powered electronics (like my 100W LED flashlight that I'm working on)... there is a set of diodes built into the motor controller chips that is specifically designed to rectify and block power. The diodes turn AC power into DC (if applicable to the system it's in) for the motor coil's control IC (usually something like a simple transistor based driver) and block current being sent back down the fan power cable. I tested a computer fan once thinking I could drive one fan with another... spun one up to 7,000 or so RPM with an air compressor and attached the other fan to it... the result... nothing! I spun the fan backwards and also changed the wires about, then checked with a voltmeter to see what the output of the spinning fan was... and the answer... it's residual (0.0001V) at best! the fans don't kick out ANY meaningful power whatsoever when you spin them... the diodes are set up to only allow power INTO the fan controller IC... and these aren't Zener diodes either... they completely block the reversed power to protect the fan controller IC... so therefore, I deduce that there is absolutely no way that you can kill a computer with feedback voltage from a computer fan... it just cannot happen!

Reminds me of my good old GTX295, that thing had to be cleaned every 3-6 months. It would usually auto poweroff at about 105C, then after cleaning it would be back to 85C at full load, good for at least another 3 months of gaming :) I just cleaned it with an air compressor, no problems.

I've used my 5850s for like 5 years straight and for some odd reason I've never had to clean them out. They always peaked at a mere 74 Celsius, and that never got any higher later down the road.

Damn Linus, you had me fooled for a second there. I had to double check the published date as I thought this was an old video when I saw the 5870. It made me realise though, in all the years I've been watching your video's, your voice nor face has changed at all - you may have been blessed with everlasting youth. Although I think the time has come for you to grow a beard. You should do it - a big fuzzy beard of epic proportions :D

My old eGeForce 8800GT Superclock just needed you to remove the screws from the top of the shroud and not disassemble the entire cooling system. Sure, it meant pulling up the decal but it was much faster than pulling the whole bleedin' thing apart.

I refuse to buy those sealed fans now as my 6970 did burn out eventually. But I recommend using a paint brush, a fairly expensive one so you lose none of the bristles in your system. But with a brush and a combination of air you can literally wipe away all the dust and have the clean looking finish your system had when it was new. I also use a vaccum, but not in the case. I have it on the outside of my case to catch any dust blown into the room after I spray the dust all over with air.
