Splitting the battery into two in order to distribute the heating evenly at the center of the phone, instead of the top or bottom, to keep the user's fingers from getting too warm/hot while setting up for a better thermal design, while at the same time creating a better overall battery capacitance, is fairly innovative imo. You may not think it's that important and may not directly see the effects of it, but from a technology viewpoint, it's pretty genius. Also, the many different ways they implement new digital and tactile buttons to the phone is pretty neat, too, adding for a lot more variety and customization. Lastly, I don't know of too many phones that have a USB and charging connector plate on the side of the phone to enable landscape docking.
