I basically cut my teeth on Windows! Back in the late 80s throughout the 90s there was nothing like Microsoft. It was very crude back in the early days but I kept hacking away and learning and soon I was very proficient at working the OS. Fast forward to the 21st century...my brother learned Linux from its inception and always talked to me about why Linux was superior over Microsoft. He always tried to get me to try out Linux mint. After having some bad experiences with the restrictions and limitations of Windows I decided to buy an older laptop and put Linux Mint 18 on it. I was pretty frustrated for the first few months with all the changes I had to learn switching from Windows. I have now been running Linux Mint on all my systems, for a multitude of reasons, simplicity is number one. I like all the ways you can customize the look and I just like the feel of not being restricted with email accounts and the like. I have been running Linux Mint since version 18. I went from 18 to 19 to 20 to 21 and now 22, 22.1 and soon 22.2! I recently ordered an ASUS Chromebox that I learned to reprogram to accept a Linux OS. I installed Linux Mint 22.1 and that little work horse has been on for several months with absolutely no crashes. One other great thing about loading Linux is that the installer gives you the option of installing a OEM install if you decide to sell a system with Linux ready for a new user. I tried Zorin 16 for a while. Just did not like it as well as Mint so I went back to my ASUS MintBox and I'm as happy as a pig in a deep mudd swallow, that's for you country boys and girls! I'll never go back to Microsoft Windows. When you don't have walls and fences, you don't need Windows and Gates! With FREEDOM comes ELEGANCE!

@michaelhopewell77392 жыл бұрын
Unless you've tried them all (and I have as a reformed 'distroholic) that's very subjective, especially as you don't seem to have strayed beyond Ubuntu variants much, if at all. The most user friendly Linux is actually MX Linux with it's MX tools putting it head and shoulders above all others, closely followed by PCLinuxOS with Linux Mint worth an honourable mention, preferably in the pure Debian (LMDE) version. And that's not just a personal opinion, I have been preaching the Linux gospel for over 20 years and have persuaded many to see the light by showing them various distros and getting them to choose which one they like best. I have 5 computers set up and I can't remember one choosing Ubuntu. Me making fake vomiting noises and screaming NO, not that one had nothing to do with it, I just let them make their own minds up in a totally unbiased way.

I've been using AOMEI partition assistant ( yes it's the free version I'm talking about and yes it still works like a champ) to format that install-drive as fat32, download the distro, copy and paste it directly into the fat32 drive and extract the iso file straight there into the drive. David I like Linux Mint. As you say its choice. Mint remove the privacy tracking that Ubuntu has. However Ubuntu tracking is nothing like Windows 10. There is some really good video editing software for Linux. Installing Linux is very easy. When you get to install now click and wait until the operating system tells you to remove the installation media. Linux is more secure than Windows by design. Windows can be made more secure by creating guest accounts that are not admin level and operating Windows as a guest. Linux comes that way so the user does not have to set that up. Linux allows almost everything to be changed. You can really make the desktop look and feel how you want it to be and lots lots more. I find Microsoft are following Linux not Linux following Microsoft. For example the Windows Store. Linux have had this for years. Finally in Linux everything is organized. Games are automatically installed into a Games folder. Office software into an office folder. Internet software into an internet folder. The menu layout is far more logical than Windows. Thank you for you video on Zorin.

I've heard that recently. I recommended 'Buntu based distros because it's what I know and can instruct new users about, but I'll be testing other distros in the future and I will do videos about them if I find something that is more newbie friendly. Manjaro will be first on my list. Regardless of what distro anyone chooses, the installation process outlined in this video should be mostly the same.
@abhileshxd6214 жыл бұрын
@@LowDoughTech Yes, you are right about recommending people based on what you know. Personally, I recommend Pop OS (Ubuntu based) for newbies and Manjaro for intermediates. Yes the installation process will be the same on most distros, except for Fedora which on automatic partitioning, partitions the HDD a little bit differently to other distros, although I guess that won't be much of an issue.

Your video does for sure explain the installation of Linux. I am not computer savvy. being merely a user. I live in a third world country where computer techs are rarer than hens’ teeth. I built my own computer more than twenty years ago and had a friend install Windows 98. I used my machine and several others after, with this os till the advent of xp. This os is most certainly the gold standard for the ordinary domestic user and even though I am not a computer savvy person, I installed XP from the exquisitely designed CD unaided. I have been using XP since its advent twenty years ago. Presently a huge amount of material on the Net is denied XP due to browser limitations. I wish to install Linux but have not found a suitable book, or video or cd offering instruction in ordinary English on Linux installation. Your video is detailed enough for a computer savvy person but I found it not especially lucid. Particularly your mentioning that the hard drive has to be formatted before installation. How does one format when there is no os installed .And how is partitioning done with no os? Perhaps you could be kind enough to provide links or information as to where the information I require is available ein ordinary English. In short information detailing in full the installation of Linux in non technical language. Thank you.
@LowDoughTech3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for asking, It's a very simple process, so don't let it intimidate you. :) Most Linux installers will format the hard drive during the installation process, pause this video at 9:29, and you will see it has the option "Erase Disk and Install Zorin OS" this is code word for "Format the drive". Though this video covers the installation of Zorin, this will be similar for other Linux distributions as well (Ubuntu, Mint, etc.) This is actually the way that I recommend doing it for new users, because it's the easiest way to do the install. Just keep in mind, formatting will erase all of the data on that hard drive, so I recommend using a hard drive that you don't mind wiping out. Or, preferably a brand new drive. I hope that clarified things and if you have any further questions you can email me at lowdoughtech@gmail.com or contact my page through messenger on Facebook. If you follow the steps in this picture, it will format the hard drive. drive.google.com/file/d/1ERLr0qbKlrj3CNfVXI_BmN6XOLtxbjJT/view?usp=sharing

@@LowDoughTech Thank you for your reply and words of encouragement. I am not at all computer savvy and have not the slightest interest in computer science or technology. I am exclusively a user nothing more nothing less. I was quite literally forced into using a computer due to the insane policies of the ruler of the country where I live.I had absolutely no problem in installing xp from the exquisitely designed installation cd put out by Microsoft. I am looking for something similar for the Linux installation. If nothing similar or better yet, identical is available , I am resigned to continue to use xp until my own personal operating system gives up as must happen to all of us eventually.

Let's be honest the ONLY issue with linux is the fact that either stuff is designed to not work with it or it doesn't work due to the user base being too split up and small for companies to be financially forced to provide compatible stuff. In other words we need to target people who are specialists and give them the distro best for that, eventually the user base will reach a self producing increase. I'd suggest you target the following when you can: GAMERS Coders Programmers Designers IF WE CAN GET AT LEAST 50% OF THESE MARKETS WE WILL WIN
@petelee24772 жыл бұрын
I think me being a gamer is what's primarily stopping me from using only Linux. I love being able to keep using my older laptop way past its support cycle since on Windows it will get slower with each update but the fact is most developers aren't supporting Linux (it's getting better but still not perfect). I don't want to buy a game I can't actually play and if I don't use windows my choices are run wine and pray it works or have a virtual machine running Windows and at that point why am I waisting resources on Linux when I can just run windows natively.

I've got Vivaldi browser and LibreOffice.... which is pretty much what an average user needs. "Linux will not force you to install updates [upgrades] you don't want". That's exactly what Ubuntu did a few years ago and why I no longer have it. That's a software dead end.

5:16 to If you're prepping a linux distro installation drive from within windows, third party tools like unnetbootin, rufus, etc are no longer even needed to do the prepping. Now given Windows built in partitioning tools are stubborn as shit ( be it the gui or using CMD prompt), I've been using AOMEI partition assistant because the ssd I use as the install-prep drive is bigger than what Winblows will format to fat32 as the limit is definitely well under 128GB's for a drive ( yes it's the free version I'm talking about and yes it still works like a champ) to format that install-drive as fat32. Then download the distro, copy and paste it directly into the fat32 drive and extract the iso file straight there into the drive with right clicking that file and selected " extract here." Now it's bootable and ready to install it. The only thing you'll have to figure out regardless of using my option or rufus, unnetbootin/third party prepping tools is in your setup/bios/uefi you''ll have to experiment given your motherboard/pc as to whether or not it will detect the os from the prepped drive from selecting "legacy" or " uefi" option in the boot menu options of that drive ( and it can be a usb thumb drive, another hard drive, or even a ssd) warning..ssd = sub 6 minute install. xD Enjoy ** note ** I have confirmed this works with Ubuntu based distros such as Ubuntu vanilla, xubuntu, ubuntu mate, and all three main flavors of Mint ( xfce, mate, and cinnamon). I have not had a chance to test other distros or distro types yet, but I have no reason to assume they wouldn't work using my method either.

After installing Linux, would the new system recognize wifi, so that I'd be able to connect to the internet and download additional programs? Thanks for your help!
@LowDoughTech3 жыл бұрын
It sort of depends; if the wifi on the laptop has gone bad, then it won't work on either OS. If there isn't an available driver for Linux, it won't work, either. I would give it a shot, and see what happens, and if it doesn't work you can pick up a cheap wifi adapter that will work with Linux to get around that problem. amzn.to/3g5RiPD

As an old technical writer, I have to comment. NOT to complain, but to commend. Nicely done, and very relevant with Windows 11 showing it's fangs. A suggestion to those with a slow Windows install. Pull that hard drive, replace with a SSD and spinning data drive, which are not expensive these days, and marvel about the new-found usefulness of your system. The old hard drive becomes your plan B, should you absolutely hate Linux. I really doubt it if you install Zorin OS, but a backup plan is worth having.

Thinking about distros in linux will give you a headache ,debian, arch, fedora .... Each have its own pros and cons Basically debian is way good for beginners , bcz it gives 5 years of agreement, it's easy to use and go with it , and alot of school and colleges use it , bcz of its simplicity Arch linux is not good for beginners ,bcz of its installation process, it keeps on going it's really hard to understand , but it's also far superior than other bcz basically you choose everything from scratch , and arch really have great community, and arch is bleeding edge , arch user repository AUR is beautiful, you can possibly get everything from there , if u don't like installation and stuff u have manjaro ready for it Fedora is unstable bcz while building some package it keeps crashing , proprietary drivers are unsupported means users will have a problem with the software to run hardware , it will be slow on few pc's, but it have a little windows like feel

I started on Mint, and still have a copy to run my printer because it doesn't play nice with Arch-based. I run i3 ArcoLinux as my daily driver and have no intention of ever switching, and I've hopped through a ton of distros. There is no such thing as a perfect distro for noobs or pros. Any distro can be made to look and feel like almost any other. The problem I have with Mint is the repos. Way way behind the curve. Nothing tops the AUR. It's that simple. But no repo is without its shortcomings. To each their own.
