THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING!!! I mean I'm using an HP Envy x360 convertible and ParrotOS, but xournal++ and Write (by stylus labs) were the first and only 2 notetaking apps I've tried thus far, and they're both INFINITELY better than any notetaking app I've ever used in the past 5 years on Windows, obviously including OneNote. And I've tried just about every single notetaking app in existence on Windows. It's so frustrating, mindblowing, and also amazing (now that I'm actually using linux) that some random linux dudes make better software than multi-billion dollar companies like microsoft...

I don't like gnome on desktops (I prefer more classic GUIs), but on touch screen it can be really good. Something like this would be the perfect device for me to study (previously) and work (now). That is, I need a small lightweight computer with different physical ports and a fully functional OS. At one time, such devices were netbooks, but now they, as a class of devices, are practically dead. Android tablets are not suitable for me - they usually do not have the necessary ports (usb, ethernet, etc.), and the OS is too limited. Great for fun, but not for work. So a Windows or Linux tablet with a physical keyboard seems ideal. The only problem is that these are either unusable Chinese junk or rather expensive models.

The tough part for me here is longevity. I bought a Chromebook in a similar circumstance and lucked out: I bought it because it was very cheap and people had patched the Linux kernel to support all the hardware on it so I figured I could run Linux. For a while it was a bit frustrating to use the patched kernel, because it took a while to bring down upstream changes. Luckily within a few years, the hardware on my Chromebook was supported natively on the Linux kernel itself, and I could abandon the custom patched kernel. As long as it is relatively promising that hardware support for these devices will make their way upstream into the Linux kernel itself at some point, I'd be comfortable purchasing a Surface tablet to run Linux. However, I'm a bit wary as I don't know how sure of a thing that is. If for some reason the hardware support doesn't make its way upstream, or the developers on surface-kernel abandon the project, I'd be left a sad camper.

Using a more niche product like a "Tablet"-PC and Lightweight laptops will probably always result in more of a hassle. But this isn't exclusive to Linux. In my case, even Windows has major flaws when not using a custom Surface version. A regular Windows installation with the typically ISO, will have no touchscreen, camera or some additional feature support. It's more the nature of the device itself, in my opinion
@johnsmith6024
@johnsmith6024 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think you need to worry about longevity or the custom kernel getting abandoned. I've been running Debian on my Pro 7 for over a year now and the developer is very active and pushes updates basically weekly. He's even had a bunch of people join him since I started using it so he is no longer alone on the project. It even had a fork for the Surface ARM devices now that he recomends and links to from his GitHub. And yes he does push all his work upstream to the mainline kernel as well. It just doesn't show up there near as fast.

I have used multiple devices, from multiple manufacturers, and with different performance profiles... I systematically get 2 hours less on Linux than I do on Windows. It has been my only real gripe with Linux. I am far from the only one that has had this experience. Things were not great with me with using Linux in a surface pro. I owned a Surface Pro 6, sold it two months ago. Although touchscreen works, pen works but… it’s far from ideal. It seems the touch sample has some problems; the pen writing and drawing is completely inconsistent. I tried with both Wayland and Xorg. It’s barely usable if you want to write, it’s totally unusable if you need to draw or constantly write (like a student using onenote like apps). Unless someone just developed a really great new touch drive or has made a breakthrough, I do not recommend to install Linux unless as an interesting test device. Or if you don’t need a reliable touch and pen support.

I’ve owned a Surface Pro 3 for years now. When I first got it, it had Windows 8.1 pre-installed. In tablet mode, that was a perfect pairing. Then Windows 10 came out and I upgraded. It was a better desktop UI, but Tablet mode regressed big time. So I wiped Windows and installed Ubuntu (the first LTS with Gnome as the DE). It was a bit rough around the edges at first with the odd crash here and there, but many upgrades since (now 22.10) and it’s smooth sailing. Gnome is by far the better tablet OS compared to Windows. Except for one thing - battery life. So it’s fine around the house, but I’d struggle taking it on the road unless there was a power point nearby. All in all, if you have an old Surface device and are wanting to breath new life in it, Linux gets the thumbs up from me.

Endeavour OS (arch based) works wonderfully on SP5. However, touchscreen is really not great, doesn't really get input well at all. And the cameras don't work on browsers, you can create some sort of backloop but that's a pain in the ass and actually doesn't work anymore. So I suggest put Linux on it exclusively if you want to REVIVE your laptop, but otherwise don't, at least yet..

IMO both Windows 11 (especially after this year's update) and Gnome are quite comparable when it comes to the touch only experience. Although they both have specific pros and cons. I've replaced Windows 11 with Fedora on my Asus 2in1 to test some things out. I definitely prefer GNOME's dashboard over the current start menu. The thing that Windows definitely does better is the touch keyboard - it's almost on pair with the iPadOS keyboard. Gesture support and window manipulation using touch are also slightly better on Windows 11 22H2.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux. I use arch btw.
@MichaelNROH
@MichaelNROH 2 жыл бұрын
I've said it in previous videos, that GNU/Linux and the Linux Kernel are different but in the context of referring to distributions, it's fine since it adds more confusion. You are 100% correct about the lingo, but I like to keep it simple as long as it stays in context.

@@vanodon2257 No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation. Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ. One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you? (An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example. Next, even if we limit the GNU/Linux title to the GNU-based Linux distributions, we run into another obvious problem. XFree86 may well be more important to a particular Linux installation than the sum of all the GNU contributions. More properly, shouldn't the distribution be called XFree86/Linux? Or, at a minimum, XFree86/GNU/Linux? Of course, it would be rather arbitrary to draw the line there when many other fine contributions go unlisted. Yes, I know you've heard this one before. Get used to it. You'll keep hearing it until you can cleanly counter it. You seem to like the lines-of-code metric. There are many lines of GNU code in a typical Linux distribution. You seem to suggest that (more LOC) == (more important). However, I submit to you that raw LOC numbers do not directly correlate with importance. I would suggest that clock cycles spent on code is a better metric. For example, if my system spends 90% of its time executing XFree86 code, XFree86 is probably the single most important collection of code on my system. Even if I loaded ten times as many lines of useless bloatware on my system and I never excuted that bloatware, it certainly isn't more important code than XFree86. Obviously, this metric isn't perfect either, but LOC really, really sucks. Please refrain from using it ever again in supporting any argument. Last, I'd like to point out that we Linux and GNU users shouldn't be fighting among ourselves over naming other people's software. But what the heck, I'm in a bad mood now. I think I'm feeling sufficiently obnoxious to make the point that GCC is so very famous and, yes, so very useful only because Linux was developed. In a show of proper respect and gratitude, shouldn't you and everyone refer to GCC as 'the Linux compiler'? Or at least, 'Linux GCC'? Seriously, where would your masterpiece be without Linux? Languishing with the HURD? If there is a moral buried in this rant, maybe it is this: Be grateful for your abilities and your incredible success and your considerable fame. Continue to use that success and fame for good, not evil. Also, be especially grateful for Linux' huge contribution to that success. You, RMS, the Free Software Foundation, and GNU software have reached their current high profiles largely on the back of Linux. You have changed the world. Now, go forth and don't be a nag.

To be honest Linux on a surface is cute and all but from my experience I don’t think it’s topping windows on the surface, I have a surface go 2 and though I understand there was touch issues,but it actually had the opposite effect than the ones you mentioned, draining more resources than Windows, thus more battery, and freezes up alot. I originally got my surface without an OS and added Manjaro gnome, and it was a nightmare, there was this thing I call “touch disease” where every time I touch my screen the distro would essentially fall apart, alongside having every resource issue I had earlier. And when my window manager fell apart I was left in a really bad position and lost a lot of data. I eventually switched to windows 10 and * Poof * my problems were gone, it was like I had a newer, much more powerful device, I even had enough room to run Bluestacks, the undisputed best android Virtual Machine, And my Windows’ window manager never falls apart. Honestly I can understand that Linux looks nice and all and has big buttons, but At least in my case, Linux is definitely not daily drivable on a surface. I currently do have Linux on my surface’s SD card, but I would never put it on my hardware again, and I would never suggest anyone else to do it either

@gilkesisking Did I forget to mention that Debian is doing A lot better, it’s doing more than just work. When I say “shared some issues” I mean gnome issues, like “touch disease”, things like the panel consuming a metric ton of ram, and lack of rotation has been fixed. XFCE,LXQT, and KDE are tip top. As for basing things off of a VM, that’s just the way things go, my Mac Pro essentially has all the resources to replicate my Surface (besides graphics) eightfold, It got 2x the resources my surface had and still failed (All other VM’s do spectacular on half load) while having the drivers built in. I admit I can just put it in a usb, and test it on my 16gb MacBook, but let’s be honest, why would I extend my hand further than I have now when I already have an OS that succeeded in the task I gave it? Either way I have nowhere else to put it. Look man I hate to sound like I hate Linux cause I don’t, I love it all. Linux has a lot of potential, but it also has a long way to go, especially in the consumer area. And just like how I don’t pull any punches with Mac OS or Windows I’m not gonna pull on Linux

Despite what you say, that the Surface is only a tablet, that only refers to your usecase. With the unit connected to a Surface Doc it can support two 4K monitors and a plethora of other devices. Even on its own, it can drive a single external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and very successfully operate as a desktop. Rather than your sub-set usecase, the unit is a hybrid 2-in-1 which is its intention of usual and advertised use of the device. Under its native operating system, it does run desktop apps very well. Also, Rnote is a very small subset of OneNote functionality, again it fits your usecase, but not most OneNote users. There are lots of shortfalls in the current implementations of Linux on Surface and unless you have a 'tablet mode only' use case. It is still not entirely viable (fully functional) as a hybrid 2-in-1 which it is on Windows. Many other 2-in-1 laptops (clamshell with 360deg screens) are much easier to set up on Linux and have more stable drivers. Certainly they are heavier, but at least everything works. On the Surface under Linux, Ink to text does not work. The stylus does not work reliably or even with full function, just very basic drawing pointer. The dock interface does not work. Contrary to what you said, the battery life of Surface under Linux is far below Surface under Windows - I had hoped it would be, measured it, and it falls way short. The long list goes on. I look forward to the day when a Surface device runs Linux and does deliver the full hardware capabilities, but we are a long way from that point. I have tried it with both a Surface Pro 7 and 8, and I have been using Linux as my main driver since the late 1990s, and know how to work around small issues. Sadly the Surface on Linux has many unresolved issues and I would not be recommending it to anyone as a serious solution. (ps. Just my opinion, and that and 50 cents are worth half-a-dollar, so take it lightly.)

The problems I had, which I could not solve, were driver issues with Atom SOCs, including eMMC problems (would spew errors during install), no touch drivers, no wifi drivers (not just missing binary blob/firmware...the whole driver). I could basically use it just with USB hub with KB/mouse/network.

I think you might have been misinformed somehow. First of all, what do you mean by 'most stable Fedora-based distro'? Anything Fedora-based will have the same update schedule as Fedora. And by 'stable' we don't mean that sth breaks less often, it simply refers to the update schedule, yes, Debian is more stable but that's actually a bad thing for most desktop users. Also, what do you mean by 'Fedora is more secure than Debian'? Pretty much all major Linux distros are almost on par when it comes to security, probably the most major difference in this case being Fedora running a newer kernel version, which it does because it's 'less stable' (and no, secure boot support doesn't make it more secure, it's a useless feature for desktop users). You sound like me before I switched to Linux, not knowing anything about it and trying to "optimize" my ideal initial setup before ever actually trying to run any distribution, only to later find out most of the opinions floating around out there are just plain wrong and that there really isn't a major difference between all the distros except the very obvious - update schedule and package manager. Seriously, you'll be stuck in this state forever and it'll get you nowhere, instead of basing your choice or opinion on what others say, free up some 100gb on your drive and just install Linux, maybe distrohop a couple times just to see the differences and you'll be rid of most of those misconceptions after a short while of actually using it.
