Several important points: Cheetahs can run fast, but only for short distances. The cheetah was trying to conserve energy by not running too much. The lion probably realized early on that he won’t catch the cheetah and just wanted to chase it out of his territory.

Besides, it’s not the distance that kills the cheetah, but high speed over that distance that gets them to overheat and risk cardiovascular arrest. But they can trot for long periods of time. As someone has said earlier The Lion was checking to see if his scent is still on the tree. It may be the edge of its territory. I do know they spray their pee into the branches .
