My daughter-in-law gave me a toy Polar Express battery operated train set. It got me interested in the Electric version O Gauge train set. Needed a table. Loved that the parts needed and instructions were easy to follow. Just built it. Only add on was a set of caster wheels to make it easy to move around. 62 years old and just getting into model railroading. Thank you for sharing. Appreciate it. Blessings.

Very helpful. Thank you. I am making my son a table for his slot car track. He said he wanted it to have scenery like model trains have. This will be perfect.

Built it this weekend. Project went well. Think I should've used wood screws instead of drywall screws. All in all, it came out well. Thank you for the easy instructions.

This is glorious, I been tryin to find out about "build a model train table scratch" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Piyaliyah Uncommunicative Preference - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a good one of a kind guide for discovering how to build a model train railroad easily minus the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my partner got excellent results with it.

I built this one back a couple of years ago, ace hardware made all the cuts for me at the store so all I had to do was assemble it. Now I'm going to build another one same size and one shorter to make a u shaped layout.
@wetnyld4 жыл бұрын
Drywall screws are the wrong thing to use for this project. You should be using wood screws. The difference is that drywall screws have thread all the way to the head. They will not draw your lumber together properly. Wood screws have an unthreaded portion at the head end and will draw the pieces together as you screw them.

Very helpful! The only thing that I might change is make the legs able to fold up for easy moving. Thanks for the help!
@georgefurman76523 жыл бұрын
So folding might be complicated, but using bolts and wing nuts instead of deck screws for the legs and supports might work for easy leg detachment and storage.
@brianfleming83106 жыл бұрын
Like the simplicity. I don’t think I can fit the 8x4 plywood in my car. Could that be cut in half and assembled the same way?
@buffalobilbo6 жыл бұрын
Brian I made a similar table and I couldn't fit an 8x4 in my car either, I had the hardware store cut it into strips that would fit in my car and added extra 45" cross braces so I could screw down each section of plywood on both sides for a flat surface. Table turned out great!

Homasote is the best sound board to use. You will find references to it on model train sites. Lowes and Home Depot sometimes carry it but I have had to locate it a specialty lumber yards in my area. If you go to the manufacturers page they have a locator.

What my dad does is do the frame, then the legs, then the table top so you only flip the table only one time and it is easier to do the legs before the table top cause it makes it easier to screw the top to the frame if the legs are screwed on before the top is on.

Great video and very informative however I'm wanting to build a 6x8 table so I'm trying to figure out if my supports need to be 6 feet or do they need to be 69 inches in order for the table to be exactly 6 feet wide and yes I am going to use 2x4's and plywood any help with this would be greatly appreciated

I am trying to find the 1/4" sound board you used and can not locate it at Home Depot or Lowes. They have 1/2" sound insulations, but it is very heavy.

+Harris Gurowitz I know you posted four Months ago , I had same problem... I live in Buffalo, NY and they have smaller Building Supply Companies ( Lenco Lumber ) Anyways found it ...pretty expense $22.00 per sheet. Try smaller guys in your area. Best wishes.
@georgefurman76523 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have to be "sound board." Many people use 1 inch foam insulation boards. There are YT vids on that.
@KlunkerRider10 жыл бұрын
2x4s??? Man that's overkill. I have never used anything larger than a 1x4, its more than sufficient to give same the rigidity as the 2x but it ends up with a much lighter and easier to move around layout. I would even say you can use 1x3s if you can find them.

That's how I built mine except I did not use the leg braces and secured the legs to the longest side using two long 1/4 inch carriage bolts on each leg. I match drilled the legs and numbered them. I have a very study 16X16 L shaped layout I can walk on.

This sound board is called 'homasote'. It comes in 4x8 sheets at a half inch thick. I have used it before(learned from my dad). Now however I am using foam insulation sheets. Much lighter and much easier to work with. Still has the same sound deadening effect.

I'm worried that the table will be too heavy, especially for just one train. So, will 1 x 4 be OK? Also, what's the difference in stability by using this plan instead of the one that Model Railroader magazine has published?

Atul Ganguly It's better to make it more heavy so it will be sturdier.

I wish they use RailSounds in their train sets today like they did back in 2003 and 2004, not these terrible trainsounds. Im not a big fan of TrainSounds as you can tell lol.

@SteamKing21607 жыл бұрын
Not all train sets have trainsounds but the only train sets that typically had railsounds with the transformer were from the early 2000's. But today you would be right but back then since LionChief wasn't around, train sets came with either trainsounds or railsounds.
