Man, I'll tell you Eric, having grown up back in the day when just to see a Lionel ad in a comic book or, even rarely, in a TV ad was something my young eyes devoured. So for you to have these clips on KZbin is just pretty damned amazing. In a way I'm sorry some of the younger crew can't appreciate what an incredible thing it is to have access to these clips in this day and time -- but I'm sure I'm showing my age. Thanks for videoing them and sharing them. It's a treat.

It'd be great if they would update the tooling, but I think it all comes down to money. If you look at the signs, there's a lot of turmoil going on right now in the O-scale hobby...so that's why both MTH and Lionel are playing it cool and trying to get by with tooling they already have whenever possible. The hobby was doing really well up until about 2010 or so and since then it's cooled off a bit and I think we're heading for a downturn that may last a few years or more. I hope I'm wrong.

It depends on whether or not you plan on getting any additional TMCC or Legacy engines in the future. Chances are you probably will so I would go ahead and get the Legacy system. It's getting pretty hard to find the old TMCC (CAB-1) system as they aren't being made any more. If it were me, I'd go ahead and get the Legacy system.

The two major O-scale manufacturers are Lionel and MTH. MTH offers more value for your money, Lionel is more expensive but also has better sound and features. This is, of course, just my opinion. If value is the biggest issue for you, go with MTH. If having the best sound and features is the biggest issue, go with Lionel. Both brands are good, however, and there is no wrong choice.

I bought a SD40-2 B&O Chessie #7609 Legacy at York last April 2017. It's a great engine and I agree, the prime mover sounds great and I got a great deal on it. I might have to get another one. Then I can lash them up on the club layout.

I don't know if You've ever done a video to compare the features between TMCC and legacy, but I would sure love to see the difference. Now I am not sure if the type of engine will matter, but I guess you could do a video with two of the same engines to show the differences (not between the engines, but between the command systems). Thanks and cool vid!

Looks nice! I have the old TMCC version. The sounds aren't quite as good, but it's a nice engine. I like the ditch lights on this one. My one gripe is the stupid control hatch. It is such a pain and it doesn't look very realistic, plus on the old version, there is a notch at the back and you can see the LED shining through it.

Eric, you seem very well informed and have lots of knowledge about railroads and attention to detail. Why might I ask, did you gravitate towards O scale (not O gauge) and Why 3 rail and not more prototypical 2 Rail? Or why not HO. In other words your layout is what an HO modeler would do. Hey its your railroad have fun above all else. Just sayin

I'm not sure you can blame the economy. If memory serves me, both Lionel and MTH have both said that their best sales years ever have come in the past few years. So it seems like people are buying. I don't mind them using existing tooling, I just wish they would update them where appropriate. The SD-80 is a prime example. How hard would it be to fix the fuel tank? Still, it seems as though there are some new innovative feature coming so the future looks good.

Not a bad effort by Lionel. I wish they would have improved on the details and tooling from the old TMCC version from 12 years ago. I really wish they would have changed the pilots over to the ES44 style pivoting pilot. Both Lionel and MTH have shown little interest in upgrading tooling lately. Instead they have just updated electronics and paint. Still, I may be in for a pair of Chessie System units at some point. Nice review.

Hi Eric! I just wanted to ask this, why are the sounds of prime movers on some diesels just wrong? This SD40-2 sounds like it has a 16-710 engine, sounds exactly like the Lionel SD60. Same with the videos that I've watched from you about the Atlas GP35, MTH GP40 and MTH DDA40X. All of those three diesels are turbocharged, but instead, the sounds from them are like they are roots blown.

If the new engine has the same type of drive on it possibly. The gears on a new engine might be stiffer than a broken in engine. But when coupled together many 3 rail engines can operate without problems.

Nice engine. Notice how Lionel's Crew Talk and TowerCom have been not as great anyone. Back in 2010, with all those new Legacy diesels, the messages were personalized for each engine. Now they are just conventional and are like the same on every diesel.

Eric, I need your opinion on this steam engine I want to buy. The item # is 6-31757 and is a postwar celebration series set but the train store near me has just the engine for $609.00. If I buy it should I buy a CAB 1 remote or a Legacy remote? The reason I'm asking is because this would be the only 3 rail TMCC equipped engine I would have in my collection and I'm not sure if I want to purchase a remote for just one locomotive. Thanks!

I am glad your CSX units look good. Sadly, I cannot say the same for my CNW units. The paint job on the CNW units is wrong and sloppy. The front of the battery boxes is painted green giving the engine a goofy checkerbeard look. CNW or Lionel has never done this on any past CNW units. That being said, my units have a thin yellow stripe right through the middle of the engineer's side of the cab. It looks unsightly. No plow looks ridiculous also. For me, the unit was a disappointment.
