For the effect of snowfall, couldn't you just take an old sifter with a handle and, turning the handle, take the sifter over the layout as if it were 'snowing'? Hold over the areas you want to 'build up'. I would think you'd get a pretty good snowing effect.? YourConscience

Im curious on snow effects. Can I use plaster to create snow, then shave some of the plaster down and use the shavings to coat the top layer then use your products to add in extra effects. I also am trying to figure out creative ways to make ice other then just these technique's. I want to have a lake partially covered in Ice but have it cracking off in area's where there are boats and jet skiers. Has anyone done a lighter sky blue lake with LED ice. I want my lake to light up to give it that glowing fantasy look. Great video. Helped me a lot. Spent all day yesterday painting on layer after layer of plaster, as Im testing out various ways to make a snowy parking lot and road way. Is flex paste softer then Plaster when dried?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael David Cilantro It sounds like you have some really great modeling ideas and some interesting questions! Regarding your question about using plaster for snow, we would not recommend it. The reason is because it may look white and fluffy when applied but when Scenic Cement or glue is used to secure it down it will turn a more grey color and the texture will probably change from fluffy to paste-like. To answer your question about Flex Paste, it is as it’s name implies, flexible. When dry, Flex Paste will have a sandable surface but maintain some flexibility, unlike plaster. So far we haven’t tried putting LEDs under water and ice. Maybe some of the other modelers that viewed this video will have some advice for you on modeling that glowing fantasy look that you are after. If you find some techniques that work for you we would love to hear about it and see photos of your modeling!

How did Matt create the smoke that was coming out from the chimney? I was wondering because my friends and I are going to make a similar diorama. Also, do you have any tips on what rock faces to use on your layout?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 7 жыл бұрын
To create the effect of chimney smoke, you will need some white polyfiber. You can find this at your local craft store. Then, you can spray paint the polyfiber gray or black to replicate the appearance of smoke. As for rock faces, we have many options that all look great. Deciding what kind of rock looks best on your layout depends on what you like. For more information about rocks for your layout, you can watch our videos at the links below. how would you recomend modeling dark mussy snow were people have been walking?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, William! Apply Flex Paste to any areas where you want dark, mussy snow to show where people have been walking. Then, apply Soft Flake Snow over the Flex Paste. While the Flex Paste is still soft, make indentations with a tool into the Soft Flake Snow and down into the Flex Paste to make footprints or any other shapes you might want.

+Carlos Santamaría Barrantes To model snow you can use baking soda. If you do a search for "baking soda snow" you will have dozens of recipes come up. You can then determine which one is best for you. As for the ice effects, check with your local craft shop for a clear or white acrylic gel. This will work similarly to give you the desired effect.

Can't wait to do this, I'm almost there! Flex paste looks perfect topped with the ws snow. I plan on modeling a low light situation where the snow has shades of blue. I read of a technique of adding a drop or two of cerelean blue acrylic paint to make the effect I'm desiring. Would you recommend that?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 7 жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes, acrylic paint can be mixed with Flex Paste or Scenic Cement. If any of your tinted snow is going to be touching a water feature, make sure that you use 100% acrylic paint. Otherwise, the water product may have a reaction to the paint not being 100% acrylic. Happy modeling!

Would the new deep pour water alter how you'd model ice/water
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, William! Creating ice effects with Deep Pour is different than with Realistic Water. You do not want to use any pigments to color the water. You will lightly sprinkle Soft Flake Snow onto freshly poured Deep Pour Water (immediately after pouring is best). Allow Soft Flake Snow to sink into the Deep Pour then sprinkle on another layer. Continue this process until the desired effect is achieved.

Is there a video like this for adding snow buildup on rolling stock? Going an extra layer with my plans and I'm not sure how to go about that other than usin a foam brush to dab it on the car where it would stick, however, there's areas where it would build up (around the ends and over the couplers) and not sure what to use there without messing up how the car runs

how about showing how to use this technique on track and roadways? I'm building a layout in which I'm gonna use this technique but I need to know how to do tracks and roads.
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 9 жыл бұрын
+k41361 For roads, prepare a road as usual, then sprinkle on Soft Flake Snow (SN140) and mist with Scenic Cement (S191) to adhere. For snow banks along the edge of the road, use Flex Paste (C1205) as demonstrated in the video. Sprinkle on Soft Flake Snow while wet. You can also brush on a small amount of Realistic Water (C1211) to model icy patches. For tracks, sprinkle Soft Flake Snow onto Ballast. Brush Snow from top of rails with a dry paintbrush. Mist Scenic Cement onto the Snow to seal it in place. Clean Scenic Cement from rails before use or conductivity will be inhibited. Hope this helps!

Do you plastercloth your trees and fences etc in after the subterrain hardens? I guess you could use lightweight hydrocal as well.
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, We recommend that you add your trees and other accents after the terrain is created. You can simply poke a small hole in the desired area with a hobby knife or punch, add a small amount of either Scenic Glue S190 or Hob-E-Tac, S195 over the hole and insert the base of the tree or fence. If needed, you can hold the object until it starts to set up. The adhesives will dry clear, add landscaping and you are set. Hope this is helpful!

+Woodland Scenics I like plaster cloth but Im at the point right now where Im trying to avoid it , im scared of it because I feel like in my layout hotwheel or matchbox cars that come barreling off my 1:64 scale race track incorporated into my layout might just smash through the plaster cloth. Is the plaster cloth pretty sturdy when mixed with newspaper wad techniques? Maybe layering it like 5 times may help but wouldn't that be a bit bulky looking?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 8 жыл бұрын
Michael David Cilantro Obviously the more times you layer it the thicker and bulkier it will be. The plaster cloth is rather sturdy and durable. I recommend adding only 2, maybe 3 layers of plaster cloth if you want to go that route. It will keep it from bulking up too much, but protect it enough so as not to destroy your layout. Hope this helps!

I have a question again! Snow is nice but I am wondering if it would be possible to scale model rain? Just having a sheet of glass with water droplets would work but I was wondering if something like a very fine misting machine could work? I am not sure how badly slight moisture will effect track however.
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 10 жыл бұрын
You are right to be concerned, and we do not recommend the misting machine technique. Tops of rails need to clean of debris, and moisture on the track would inhibit conduction inhibiting train operation. . A good technique is to dip the bristles of a stiff-bristled toothbrush into Realistic Water (C1211). Then, run your thumb over the bristles to spatter the Realistic Water onto your surface. Hope this helps, and Happy Modeling!

+Woodland Scenics Whoa thats an awesome Idea. I wanted glow in the dark rain droplets in area's where there are Biohazards spills. I think neon glow in the dark slime effect added with this awesome idea of flicking droplets that glow n the dark onto things will work out great. Im concerned with one thing though. I wanted in certain area's to have glowing track but sounds like that would derail the train or cut the power off if rails were lightly misted in glow in the dark paint. Great feedback though.

@ModelSceneryExpert

Matt outlines the water feature with a bead of our Scenic Glue, Item S190. We recommend our Scenic Glue, because it is tested for this purpose. Other white glues and caulk have additives that will react adversely with the Realistic Water, so if you use something else, you will want to test it first. Also, wait until this glue is COMPLETELY DRY AND CLEAR prior to pouring our Realistic Water product, Item C1211. Hope this helps and Happy Modeling!

What is the ration of water to Scenic Cement when using it as a spray solution for applying the Soft Snow? Also can the soft snow be applied to Bachmann E-Z track with the scenic cement? Thanks so much for this very helpful video!
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 10 жыл бұрын
We are sorry for the confusion, but Matt mistakenly mentions to dilute the Scenic Cement. This is not correct. It is ready to use full-strength, right out of the bottle. Shake well before applying. Yes, you can use this technique with Bachmann E-Z track, but remember to avoid the rails. The best method for applying Soft Flake Snow to the track area is to brush Flex Paste onto the desired track area, sprinkle with Snow while wet, working in small sections so the Flex Paste does not dry. You can also apply Snow directly to the area and spray with Scenic Cement as Matt demonstrates. In either application, make sure not to get Flex Paste or Soft Flake Snow on the rails, and make sure to clean your rails thoroughly prior to running your train to remove any adhesive that may get on them during this process. Hope this helps.

The best way to model a realistic water area is to use dark and light shades of color with Earth ColorsTM Liquid Pigment. Start with lighter color around the edges, such as Stone Gray (C1218) and use a water ratio 16-parts water to one part pigment. In the center of the water area, use Slate Gray (C1219) or Black (C1220) to model deep water with the same ratio. Be sure to blend the edges where the paint shades meet to avoid harsh transition lines and model changes in depth. Happy Modeling!

Sorry, we have no way of knowing what the retail cost of the products would be in Columbia. You can check out the full Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price in U.S. dollars on our website. If you ordered it from us, I think the shipping costs would make it VERY expensive, but you can check that out too on the website. Just put the products in the shopping cart and choose Columbia in the shipping box, and it will calculate the costs. Hope this helps!

To incorporate a waterfall within a winter scene like the one modeled here, it must be added after the Realistic Water pond is completely dry. To give the waterfall a frosty look similar to the pond, mix a couple of drops of White - Earth Colors Liquid Pigment into the Water Effects before shaping the waterfall. Watch how much pigment is added, because a little goes a long way. Hope this helps get you started. Happy Modeling!

I would like to combine this with the waterfall video shown by Woodland Scenics. This would be used for my Christmas Village. Would you have any tips for me? Thanks!

that is exactly where most of us started :) Not sure where you are at after 8 years but nothing wrong with starting there :) I myself had a time where I didn't model as I had to leave my bedroom at home when i went to college etc. but started up again recently and I am completely enjoying all the new products and methods available that have come out since then.

No, I mean it possible to put the snow on without glueing it down by just sprinkling it all over the layout? Sort of like a non-pernament winter on your layout.
