Max Rodriguez being shy is different from being "not nice". Just because he's shy doesn't mean he doesn't want to interact with people. For instance, i myself is a shy person. Not because i don't like them but because i have poor social skills. Messi being shy equals to his humility. He was raised well. He doesn't go out in interviews saying he's the best unlike some players i know i won't mention. He's just there. He loves playing football, he enjoys it. But being with cameras flashing 24/7 is undoubtedly uncomfortable to anyone, but more so to his humble and quiet character. He doesn't know how to react to the attention he's getting, and it's because of his humility principle. Always plant your feet on the ground. That's just his character. He's calm and collected, quiet, shy and humble. One of the many reasons why he's the greatest.
