Nelson Rogers actually said it broke madonnas heart not being invited. He told her they said it was because they didn’t think she could sing. It sounds like the truth got lost in translation. But she was so upset by it, that when the song was performed at the live aid concert, she wouldn’t sing it with them. But Nelson told her not to worry, because she has talent.

Madonna wasn't invited cause they thought her career wouldn''t last compared to Cindy Lauper & the media backlash to Madonna. Even La Toya Jackson and Sheila E. ended up in the video somehow. Quincy Jones thought Madonna was an absolute flash in the pan at the time, but admitted that her “career outlasted almost anyone’s in the room.” They were quickly proven completely wrong.

He's absolutely upper tier A list writers/producers w/ McCartney, Barry Gibb etc....This guy was a super versatile smash HIT machine covering every possible genre to the max. While I also feel they f-ked up NOT having Madonna (was actually a bit red hotter than Cyndi by Jan. '85) Cyndi's ONE line buildup was imo maybe the highlight vocal hook of the song! Crazy.
