my dad had a 224 with those passenger cars, it came out every Christmas and ran under the tree. there was a diner, gateman, station, all metal and a pair of O22 switches. Oh the sweet smell of a real Christmas tree and Lionel ozone, the warm glow of the lights, for me as a kid it was all enchanting.

I agree. I think, because of the lack of affordable train sets from people like Lionel, a lot of people just don't have them under the tree like they used to unless it is a hand me down like my Dad's train 2037).

The 224 was producer before 1945. My mother bought my dad a passenger set for their first Christmas in 1941. I still had the set in 2006 when my house was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. great set, ran great!

Love the 224eand 225e model lionels. I have one of each and they're excellent runners for the everyday train lover. 😊

The 1666 also has spoked drivers instead of the Baldwin Disc drivers. They are smooth engines!

The set you put together was the set I got from"Santa"when I was 6yrs old. I was too stupid to even keep it on the track, Kids today are much smarter. However, I still have the set it good condition !

While technically, the engine is a 2-6-2 prairie, I believe the boiler shell was actually based on a New York Central Hudson, though a lot smaller. So, you aren’t that far off calling it a Hudson, haha.

Very nice! My first Lionel was given by Grandpa to me on my first Christmas and it was another train that was a first wedding anniversary gift by my Nama to Grandpa in 0ct of 1942. It still has a paper saying that 'due to the war effort, Lionel reserves the right to make substations to material and accessories to their sets'. It started a lifelong love for Lionels and other makes that are O or O27. Now my son and I rescue old beat-up models just like you do. Even ones I got for parts, wound up being repaired.

Prewar 224’s had the rounded cab floor. Postwar they were squared. Only 1945 224’s had black handrails.

There was only one set available in 1945 the No. 463W "O" Gauge Freight Set . As you indicated the early version of the locomotive and tender, have blackened steel handrails on both the Loco and the tender, and the freight cars, came with (early examples) “flying shoe trucks” the couplers are the postwar type.

My 224 is a prewar 224E which is identical to yours except it has chromed handrails and 224E number plates. Its tender is a die cast 2224T (no whistle) Most came with 2224W whistling tenders or a 2666W plastic shell tender with blackened handrails (I only noticed this just now while looking at a 2666W in my collection.)

yo got me a 224, make sure that plate behind the motor by the gears is screwed on very tight because otherwise it will go crooked and jam the motor causing one of the armatures to explode lol. Don't ask how I found out.

One of my pet peeves, no loco is complete without its matching tender. EBay sellers need to stop separating the two. I bet if you check your vender sold it separately. This loco led the only set produced in 1945 as Lionel wanted to have a set ready for Christmas. It was based on a Pacific (4-6-2) although it only had a 2 wheel front truck. I believe you called it a Hudson (4-6-4) oops. These are good runners and I love the Baldwin Disc drivers. My 674 has them. Thanks for sharing,
@CloverdaleTransitAuthority

Yeah. My bad. I just shot a video with one of my Hudson's and had it on my mind. I really wish, as well, people kept the tender with its original mate. I do realize that they could get separated during their life but some people are just trying to make a buck.

@@CloverdaleTransitAuthority I agree. And a lot of them do that. I won't buy unless its an incredible deal I do have a couple extra tenders. I bought a 2035 at a show for $5.00 a couple years ago. Was missing a few things but I was able to get all the parts and put it back together. Now I need to find that pesky short! lol
@CloverdaleTransitAuthority

@@richardsobieck9660 I think if you watch my videos, I'm all for getting a deal on a loco that needs some work and/or may not have a tender (I have extras too). What amazes me is that some people on eBay or FB Marketplace are asking as much for the tender as the average rate for a loco. I am on the hunt for a 736 now and I am willing to pay a little more if it has the tender.
@richardsobieck9660

@@CloverdaleTransitAuthority I agree. According to every price guide the value stated for any steam loco includes the proper tender. These clowns charge the full price for a loco and then try to get another $50-$100 for the tender. Not honest. I have another pet peeve, when they show pics of a loco and tender with the tender turned backwards like it supposed to be streamlined with the higher coal load in the rear. You might think they would figure it out trying to couple them together. It just bugs me! Ha haa

In this video you kept referring to this 2-6-2 as a Hudson. It is not a Hudson. The Hudson is a 4-8-4 and would be much longer than this. This is a Pacific type, I think. At any rate the locomotive is this video is not a Hudson.

Yeah I had made a comment in a later video that I kept mis-speaking. Hudson actually is a 464. But you are correct it is a Pacific.

The 224 and 1666 are pretty much the same except the roller contacts vs the skid plates. I think the 1666 was as early as 1939 prewar. On the dining table? Understanding wife………..😊

@@andyevans2336 I had to go back and watch the video to see what you were referencing. I was just rubbing my hand across the grab irons as I talked. You would need to use an abrasive to get that off. Not that you'd want to. Some of it has come off over the years. It's still there and you can see it. It's sort of turned into a brownish color now.
