I went to Strasbourg in 2013. 475 powered the train. And a Day Out with Thomas event was happening on the same day.

Thanks for your honest and thorough review, it did help in decision to purchase. Picked up 2nd hand Locomotive, tender, 3x coaches, boxcar, and a crane - all SRR. Like you it has become my favorite train, despite some of its accuracy shortcomings. Just love the Strasburg RR, live about 45 minutes away and it is our “go-to” relax place. The wife and I went to Strasburg PA. for our honeymoon 30 years ago. We stayed at the Caboose Motel too. And of course we rode on that train. Great video!

To be fair, I don't really mind the fact that 475 in this set is an 0-8-0. It's a starter set, which means that it's meant for an entry-level model railroader who may not be too concerned about accurate details. Yeah, I would've preferred if it was a Norfolk and Western 4-8-0, but it does its job regardless as a simple engine to run.

Nice review. I just ordered the new Strasburg set and, though not prototypical at all, is a great value. If they ever make a Legacy N&W 475 (which is doubtful), it'll probably cost around three times what the set does, for just the engine. I used to have the Polar Express freight set with the 0-8-0 in it, and was impressed with how nice the engine was for a starter set. The new Strasburg with Bluetooth, remote, better speed control and sounds should be great.

I forgot which, but in a podcast after the 90 was announced Lionel said they would love to actually make prototypical models of the Strasburg engines but they wont be starter sets and, like u said, are gonna be in the thousands

@@thomasdotd500 I have to amend my previous reply. I had placed two orders for some Strasburg pieces around the same time, and the order containing the set went to All About Toy Trains. I have received no other communication from them, so I guess it was a pre-order.

If Lionel were to produce a 4-8-0 in traditional size, it would require a completely new tooling which would take this set out of a ready-to-run price range, thus making it difficult to justify the cost. The new Lionchief Berks retail at $450 alone already. The 0-8-0 was Lionel’s compromise after many were upset about the 4-4-2 Scout locomotives made throughout the early 2000s. Lionel has mentioned in podcasts that that do intend on making actual 475 and 90 in the future, though they will be in the thousands of dollars price range. The models would include a whistle-steam effect and all the other bells and whistles (pun intended) of Lionel’s top of the line steam locomotives

Yeah I've brought up this argument 100 times to people. It's a ready to run starter set. If the loco costs more than $400 then you aren't making a starter set. I didn't know however that they were interested in redoing the models for more experienced/rivet counting modelers. Pretty cool.

@@thomasdotd500 Lionel goes on an O Scale podcast called Notch 6 when the new catalogs come out. Mentioned after the most recent catalog that they worked with Strasburg on the starter set and will continue to work with them on future projects. Additionally, in the new Lionel catalog, there is a new 0-6-0 tank engine with Lionchief 2.0. The Brooklyn East District Terminal (BEDT #15) is the actual locomotive that was used by Strasburg to create Thomas.

Nevertheless, very interesting that they intend to keep the ball rolling with strasburg for future, more accurate models. Fingers crossed I suppose.

The thing that makes me want this set is the coach cars. That red is really nice but the loco its self is kinda sad that its not more true ti the actual locomotive. It may be me but it seems that if its not a legacy model your not going to get true realism. I restore prewar and postwar and its amazing how some of those locomotives have 10x more detail than modern lionel

This Locomotive is a USRA 0-8-0 , Lionel has made a lot of variations of this engine yet there's very little information about it : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USRA_0-8-0 Any of finding out more information about it ? This locomotive is a switcher , not a mainline engine .

First they totally fail to create an even half descent 475. Now they make 90, a 2-10-0, a 0-8-0. God awful.

The 475 was almost like a tradition of making it an 0-8-0. But the 90 is an absolute fail. With the 475 0-8-0 despite the inaccurate wheel arrangement and tapered boiler, a lot of the real locomotives details were present. But 90 is an absolute fail
