@rageraptor71273 жыл бұрын
@@joshgiesbrecht historically we actually have been relatively good about it. In ancient times it wasn’t too uncommon for even disabled and impaired people to live relatively long healthy lives in their communities. It wasn’t until much later when human civilization became agricultural and we started to depend less on individuals to group survival that we really started becoming cruel to each other in every aspect. Band level societies rarely fought and even more rarely engaged in mortal wars or even imprisoned or enslaved others. Wars simply didn’t really exist. Mainly because people lived in groups of up to 30 and the death of any given individual meant the death of most if not everyone in some cases. So everyone had to be at least a little good at everything. And everyone depended on one another. There was a clear incentive to keep everyone alive. But when agriculture came around. Is when humans really didn’t have an incentive to be kind to one another anymore. It simply wasn’t viable for long term survival of genes anymore. It was way better to plunder, enslave and pillage and gain years worth of work in seconds rather than having to grow it yourself as risk something like that.
@bdelectr74113 жыл бұрын
We have an abundance of resources, so we're not forced to make a decision between providing for viable or frail offspring. I'm not sure how prevalent it was, in ancient Rome newborns which were determined to be too weak could be abandoned at the discretion of the father. I feel like that’s a statement too broad to apply to the entirety of the animal kingdom. Most people know nature is cruel and only the strongest survive. But at least the phrase isn’t entirely without reason with cases like dogs, cats, and other animals caring for abandon human babies or adopting orphaned animals as their own. Than again, animals and humans both have the capacity to be complete assholes 😭

And if they did intervene, what would they do with an injured, lame lion cub? Who will pays the bills to house, treat and feed him? And what about the thousands of other sick and injured animals roaming around Africa? And why should an apex predator like lions get any treatment at all. They survive by KILLING other animals.

It’s amazing, the decisions that animal parents make in the wilderness are decisions most people couldn’t even imagine doing to their children or families. The natural world can be a cruel and ruthless place, but at the end of the day, the mother did what she had to to ensure the survival of her cubs. I still love these animals and I don’t think that this is a good reason to dislike them. However that still doesn’t make it any less sad for the one that was left behind. (Also, Spoilers, I think it’s worth mentioning the cub makes it to adulthood, so that’s a major highlight👍🏾)

A student once asked the American anthropologist, Margaret Mead, what she considered to be the first evidence of civilisation. Mead answered that for her the first sign of civilisation is a healed femur (thigh bone). The healing of the thigh bone, which can take months when immobilised, means that someone must have hunted, provided shelter and gathered food for that person before the bone healed. All in all, according to her, the evidence of compassion was the first sign of civilisation. From "The Wire"

@KingDiamonds1 No they don't. They're given plenty of toys to play with, and the zookeepers interact with them all the time. And most of them are born in zoos.
@Keznen3 жыл бұрын
@KingDiamonds1 The only idiot is you. Zoo animals don't live in cages, they live in huge enclosures with plenty of enrichment. And animals born and raised around humans could not live in the wild because they would go to humans for food. Also, zoos save animals from extinction. Without zoos, many endangered animals would already be extinct.
