an Amiga 500 equipped with Lionheart, Golden Axe, Gods, Flashback, Superfrog and Shadow Fighter could be not a world but a universe of happiness for a boy of the time. For me it was like that, good times, beautiful video

Visually, there's a nice mix of colour gradients in the background, line scrolling for all the clouds and hills and ground, a couple of full overlapping actual background layers, and palette swapping for the water that all add up to a nice effect.

Impressive skills on this impressive amiga game. It was far too difficult for me to handle back in the day. I never made it out of the swamps. The graphics looks stunning even today. All the colors and details really make it shine for an Amiga 500 game.

It was a difficult game but back then almost all of us used a joystick and we all know now that they were crap to play games like this. I still remember the difference when I got an arcade stick, quick shot maverick one. And to think that this games runs on a stock A500 and its just 4 disks. One of the best games on my list.

This is just proper Amiga game that actually makes use of the hardware. Amiga custom chips were one of the greatest achievements in the history of computers. Too bad C= didn't invest into Amiga development to push these designs further. Newer Amigas needed more audio channels and some enhancements for better 3D graphics capabilities, because OCS/ECS/AGA chips were designed with 2D graphics in mind, so they were struggling with even vector graphics and Wolfenstein like raycasted graphics. Using some tricks made 'Doom-like' games possible, but the graphics were rather low-res and the rooms fell empty, sacrificing additional objects in games. The vector based 3D graphics were quite slow on low-end Amigas and needed accelerators to make any sense. In 2D graphics departament Amiga was only limited by the amount of memory and floppy disks. 1MB in A500 wasn't too much and 2MB im A1200 was a joke, because you couldn't use full capabilities of the AGA chip with only 2MB of RAM

I was just working on a video segment for this game and came across your gameplay running through it on Lionhard. Controls definitely took getting used to and then some... your playthrough was super helpful in giving me some strategies for a lot of the game. Great gameplay and thank you for posting this. If you like, I'd gladly highlight some of your gameplay on Lionhard and give you a shout out and link. I'm sure many of my subs will be hype to emulate and play this after I show it and may be looking for a good playthrough for some tips. If you see my comment and are OK with it let me know. I'll make sure to show off some of your gameplay and send some people your way, as it definitely helped me learn the game.

Thanks for watching, glad you found this playthrough helpful. Great game, it sure takes some time and effort, but once you get used to the controls, it's very enjoyable. I've been a fan of your channel ever since I did some "research" of sorts in retro shoot'em'ups, and found your very high quality and informative videos. Yeah sure, it would be great if you included clips from this playthrough in your content, thanks for taking the time to comment. I haven't been too active in youtube lately, but I still watch, and appreciate it when some of these videos seem to be worthwhile 🙂

Gameplay might be basic compared to recent games, and yet, I find it more fascinating. There was something magical and even mystic about those games in the 90s. I don't feel that anymore. Modern games focus a lot on fun, graphics, gameplay, which is great, but the atmosphere/magic is lost.
@v509-cassiopeiae3 Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. Due to the limited technology at that time, the programmers made more effort elsewhere. That was often the atmosphere, art style and music. Back then, people had more courage to be creative because financial success wasn't as important as it is today.

Flink was the next game by the same artist as Lionheart (Henk Nieborg, now one of the best known pixel artists in the world). Leander is worth a mention as a beautiful and playable A500 game. Fire and Ice has its moments as well. And for art, graphics, and atmosphere, though not for gameplay, the first Shadow of the Beast game also needs to be mentioned.

Makes your head ache trying to work out how they pulled it off. I wonder if alot of palette switching (down the screen) takes place on certain levels.
