Very well done, but a few things were missed about it: The most important being the Battle of Cherbourg (1864), near the coastline of France. The USS Kearsarge tracked down the CSS Alabama, a Confederate Privateer, and the two ships gave battle near Cherbourg, France. The Kearsarge sank the Alabama in that battle.

Great video, I knew the navy was a big part of the war, but I didn't realize how big of a part they played.

The Battle of Hampton Roads was not a draw. The rebels had failed both their tactical objective, which was to sink the USS Minnesota, as well as their strategic objective of breaking the blockade. The crew of the USS Monitor had successfully diverted the rebel ironclad "Virginia" away from the Minnesota, and never again did the rebels threaten the blockade. Thus a tactical and strategic victory for the U.S. Government.

Winfield Scott is very underrated

This video seems an excellent resource for those wanting to get their feet wet on the subject. For the basics. Alas for those of us that want a bit more technical and advanced look at the navy.... yeah. 😐

Shame they didn't save a couple of ships for today . They still had many ships in the turn of the century 1908-1918

We have a Navy because there was first the U.S.Army. We have Marines because there was first a U.S.Army. We have an Air Force because there was first a U.S. Army. We have a Coast Guard because there was first a U.S.Army. The U.S.Army paved the way that made it possible to have all of the above. Thanks to you all that serve are Nation so Proudly and with Honor.

It also managed to ignore the Trent Affair- an America warship removing two Confederate diplomats from a British mail ship, which nearly lead to war between the United States (Union) and Great Britain. The American Navy was no match for the British Navy, so Lincoln backed down.

Great Britain was sued in International Court for the C.S.S. Alabama Claim for allowing the building of Warship/Raiders for the Confederate States Navy CSN that attack the U.S. Merchant Fleet commerce. The payout settlement was $15,000,000. to the United States.

@@kristov29 Though by 1865 the U.S. (Union) Navy had dwarfed the Royal Navy. The latter having a strength of 540 warships and the former having 671 including 65 ironclads. Lincoln's concern was "one war at a time" and avoiding a second front in Canada. Though after the confederates had been defeated, Sec. Seward had almost immediately threatened war against France unless they withdrew from Mexico.

Why do people keep saying “congressional Medal of Honor”? It is the Medal of Honor. It never has been nor will it ever have anything to do with Congress. F@?! Everyone who adds congressional. This is supposed to be a history channel and they get the most important service medal wrong.

It's actually presented by the president in the name of congress hence why people call it the congressional medal of honor

2:55 if Japan wanted to remain isolated that was its prerogative. American and Europeans insulted sovereignty of japan and China by forcing them to do what White people wanted

Nations do whatever is in their best interest. Our best interest was to have Japan open to trade. Japan profited from it's opening to the world more than it lost.
