Dana (Kristen Connolly) correlates the monsters with the objects in the cabin's cellar and realizes that the objects determine which monsters are released. So, cornered by security personnel, the pair release all the monsters, which wreak havoc and slaughter the staff.

Shout out to whoever designed the big red button on the control panel to release ALL the monsters at once, it really makes you wonder what kind of emergency would even prompt anyone to think "You know what could solve this? Dozens of living nightmares on the loose!".

Or if the base isn't being infiltrated, you can purge all the monsters by locking the door and releasing them against each other. It's the monster purge button, so they wipe each other out. It's why all the doors point at each other. PRoblem is, the security staff was in the room. sTill dumb. But not completely stupid. It had a train of logic, it just ignored common sense safety protocols.

@@kiddfaith4397 Legit, I think that, within the rationale of the movie, that lever might actually be a necessary part of the facility's construction, like some SCP style logic. Like, the whole point of the facility is that they are dancing on the razor's edge of oblivion in the hopes of placating the Ancient Ones. I wouldn't be surprised if, in order for the nightmares to be properly contained, there actually HAD to be a really easy "release them all" switch built into, or else the nightmares would just naturally escape.

I don't know. One one hand: something like control room would definitely need some sort of access key to work on. on the other hand: Big organisations, government or corpo love to skim corners based on the idea that what is unlikely to happen is in fact impossible to happen. So It kind of feels realistic that they would leave the room expsoed because no one would unlock all the monsters simply because they'd screw themselves. At least on paper, I mean. My guess that if I was going to reach for a reason for why the system has that it was for when the cages were empty and you needed to cycle through the new cage system. No reason not to open all the doors at once to get the monster in. Which would explain as to why when the system felt the cages were empty - went from its first state 1: full to state 2: empty which would be opposite for its original intent - it would continue to cycle. That's the only logical reason I could see the cycle system being there still. Because it was too much effort to remove after. That or it was a desperate back up plan to kill any of the tributes. You know, lead them down the lab. Evacuate it. Then release all monsters. Job done.

The entire movie's plot is that this 'ritual' is, in the most objective sense, a business transaction of sorts. The Ancient Ones were wrecking the shit out of the world already, but then they stopped and struck up a deal with early humanity. Presumably, they got bored or something, because humanity sure as shit didn't overpower them, and I doubt that we outsmarted them, either (beyond some very basic 'Please stop killing us and in exchange we'll do something cool.' negotiations). What I'm getting at is, I very much doubt that there was any mind control involved at all. The Ancient Ones probably dictated their terms very clearly, and designing a big red 'fuck everything' button was one of them. The real question is whether it was some sort of incredibly nuanced, tactical decision that took a lot of thought and negotiating to finalize, or if it was just Bogzogogt the Ancient One leaning over and saying to Gogzogogt, "Hey, watch what I'm gonna make the humans do. It'll be funny.".

Justinian Snow - Oh yeah. Forgot about that. My point was this whole scene, which essentially boils down to bad people getting killed by sealed evil in a can isn’t a trope you see to often, which is a shame. To many big budget films today often just have a climax that pits a CGI army of good guys against a CGO army of bad guys. Irrespective of who wins, it’s always the exact same formula. And the scene we see in this clip could be replicated in any big budget franchise we’ve seen.

I still remember watching this scene for the first time. I was channel surfing...in Costa Rica on vacation where everything was dubbed to Spanish (a language I do not speak fluently), so at first when I saw two people hiding from armed guards, I thought it was some kind of action thriller or something...I was not ready for the doors to open and unleash every horror movie monster in the book, and yet I also couldn't look away, so I saw the entire rest of the movie having no idea what it was actually about or what anyone was saying.

i went to the universal studios haunted house night in Florida once with the fam and my cousin. they had ridiculously long wait times for the haunted houses so we really only could see 2 of them, but by far the best out of those two that we visited was the haunted house themed after this movie. the whole thing was setup like you were there to witness the aftermath of the movie. all the easter eggs and monster cameos throughout the experience were so top tier. there was the bimbo's head stuck to a tree, the whole cabin was exatly the same layout, even with the wolf head on the wall. the big guy came out of the shadows and walked menacingly towards the visitors down a long dark hallway. they even had the part where the merman was eating the guy and the blowhole was squirting blood just like the movie

well it was labeled as a "Purge" button, and since the monsters were there to facilitate the "horror movie" ritual plan, I assume it means purge the facility if it was discovered/compromised to which a literal horde of horror movie monsters would do the job quite well, no idea how they would intend to get it back under control however now if this was an SCP facility where the whole point was capturing/containing the monsters I would bet the purge would have been a bit more along the lines of a nuclear bomb
